I smoked marijuana 4 times. I appear to have gotten smarter, with an increase in "good" grades during the much harder A-level exams (although that might be becuase I actually revised for them. That said, I do sometimes find it hard to find the right word I want to use- although I'm putting that down to a much larger than usual vocabulary).
tbh that sounds more like some sort of social anxiety disorder than side effects of weed
This really isn't surprising to me, the key phrase here is "still developing".
That isn't exactly a scientific analysis there... I can also attest to knowing people who have turned into grumpy, unmotivated slugs because of long term over use. Being high is addictive, some people have a really hard time stopping and become dependent.
The high is addictive in the same way having fun is addictive and of course it's not scientific analysis, it's a dude who smokes every now and again spit balling and going from personal experience.
I'd put money on it being the drawn out after effects of the high, for a couple of days after it you can feel a wee bit mentally sluggish, after 3 or 4 days though you're good.
I'm sure they would have controlled for this. They'd have told the subjects not to smoke for like a few days or a week or so before the test.
The high is addictive in the same way having fun is addictive and of course it's not scientific analysis, it's a dude who smokes every now and again spit balling and going from personal experience.
you're pretending like the people doing this research were elementary school kids
Also I'm surprised this can be printed without controversy in normal media now:
It is such a special study that I'm fairly confident that cannabis is safe for over-18 brains, but risky for under-18 brains”
IQ is slightly based on how much you want to do the test, if you've just smoked some weed the last thing you want to do is some stupid test. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-13156817
you're pretending like the people doing this research were elementary school kids
I'm not saying or implying anything about the folk that ran this study, I'm saying that I'm going from personal experience, and that the addictive factor for cannabis isn't a chemical action just that it's because it's enjoyable and thus you want to repeat it. My post was directed at No_excuses not as a jab at the legitimacy of the study.
The high is addictive in the same way having fun is addictive and of course it's not scientific analysis, it's a dude who smokes every now and again spit balling and going from personal experience.
The problem is some people want to be high all the time. That costs lots of money and they eventually depend on weed to feel normal or good at all.
Young people either get a decrease or increase of IQ at a certain time during their teen years. It's not the cannabis.
I'm sure they would have controlled for this. They'd have told the subjects not to smoke for like a few days or a week or so before the test.
If I was running the study, I'd do both. Always best to try all options with science.
Also I'm surprised this can be printed without controversy in normal media now:
Uses " I'm " so it could be an opinion.
I am 100% sure that cannabis is not the direct factor of the IQ decrease, but rather the subjects' lack of desire to learn and apply their knowledge (due to cannabis). Basically, I don't think cannabis itself lowers the IQ, but rather the subject allowing themselves to 'slack off' due to their usage. Edit: Essentially, this study suggests that people with weak willpower will slack off when using cannabis.
do you understand what a scientific study is Seriously you are so full of shit
Back when I was sober three years ago, I took an IQ test and scored a 108. After I began smoking, I scored 115. IQ tests are inconsistent. Just took another out of curiosity (Cambridge test on Facebook) and scored 120. I'm a heavy smoker and am sleep deprived.
I knew a few friends in school who became stoners, I did notice they became dumber and slower and more zoned out a lot of the time. Then again I think it was only temporary.
they could have been high
I would think that you smoking marijuana would make you not care, therefore not applying your self in school so you just are dumb. Although many people who were in my high school waked and baked and they actually were very smart, passing all their classes with A's and B's, but there was also kids who smoked pot who were dumb as bricks.
wow, who cares? I took an IQ test 3 years ago and scored a 108. Took another last year and scored 115 (AFTER I began toking, binging, rolling, and tripping mind you), talk about inconsistent.
I started playing golf when i was 14 and was usually 3 over par on every hole, but 3 years later, after I converted to christianity, I began getting holes in one all the time
I started playing golf when i was 14 and was usually 3 over par on every hole, but 3 years later, after I converted to christianity, I began getting holes in one all the time
Clearly you are Jesus
I started playing golf when i was 14 and was usually 3 over par on every hole, but 3 years later, after I converted to christianity, I began getting holes in one all the time
Surely it has nothing to do with practice.
I started playing golf when i was 14 and was usually 3 over par on every hole, but 3 years later, after I converted to christianity, I began getting holes in one all the time
Jesus loves you.
Anectdotal evidence doesn't exist... but I have seen what smoking a lot of weed can do to people in the long run. It's not good. I'm partial to a joint on occasion, but I used to know a guy that would smoke 3 or 4 a day. He went from being a charming, intelligent and fucking hilarious mate... to a mumbling, grumpy leech. All he would do was sit and smoke. People that say it's harmless are full of shit. I miss that guy :(
One of my best friends online went through a similar change. One of his RL friends got him into the stuff, and now he spends all of his free time smoking, refuses to play games or talk to me unless he's absolutely baked, and is really unresponsive when we chat together. He used to be so polite and nice to me, but now he gets really cranky and mean when I try to joke around or warm up to him. It's like he doesn't even care about anything anymore. I really used to look up to him, too.
people who get changed for the worse by weed are dumb. it's not the drug's fault, its theirs.
I don't want to be a bad person, but I see it more as one of those "correlation does not imply causation" things, where there definitely is a correlation, but could be caused by other things rather than the drug itself.
I find it fascinating how there are so many people trying to downplay the results or even claim they're inaccurate, but if this was any other "studies show" thread people would be claiming it was obvious, or perhaps that it makes sense when it's put that way.
this explains way more than it should

I can see where this is coming from as most stoners in high school now do nothing but 420 get high, but if used responsibly I'm sure the outcome will be different
This may be a scientific study, but let me tell you about that one time I smoked weed and did marginally better at Test Taking / Fixed Mast Sailing / Cunnilingus.
Marijuana is a very complex drug, saying it reduces IQ JUST due to correlative evidence rather than reasons as to why it would do such a thing causes suspicion.
Except until such evidence arises, we can reasonably assume that marijuana causes brain damage in developing brains.
This is why I always tell people to wait
