Mega - The hopeful successor to the online file storage site Megaupload.com that went down this time last year, is now officially live. Kim Schmidtz, or as know known as 'Kim Dotcom' has launched the new cloud storage website as an act to restore the world's largest base of on line files and to bring innovation back to the table. Mega works both as a new Megaupload; to provide to millions amongst the web - a safer file storage solution and to prove to the United States government that innovation and his ideas will beat them. Kim Dotcom was abruptly and irrationally arrested during a house raid at his $24 million dollar mansion early last year in an attempt by the FBI and American Government to shut down Megaupload.com and arrest Kim Dotcom on several felony charges, such as; Massive on line piracy, hacking, money laundering, credit card fraud and much more. Since then, there has been an on-going effort to restore Kim Dotcom's rights and get the new cloud service online, which he hopes to prove to the US Government that he will 'win' the battle between politics, the internet, and piracy. The new website allows users to create their own account where they can upload any type of file which they can either keep for personal reasons, or share with their friends via links: Which they can then download from. Each account gets a free 50GB of data storage and you can purchase three pro tiers offering 500GB to 4TB of data for $13 - $40 a month. Not only this but Kim Dotcom plans to make encryption a 'mainstream product' as he explains - which the user is completely unaware of but will allow third-party developers to use the websites API to create VOIP calling, Encryption, Email Services. Basically creating a level of security users can use for privacy reasons with the idea that one day everything transferred over the internet has an encryption layer and is private. Again, this is Kim Dotcom's ambition and one of his main aims with Mega; internet privacy. The site also aims to compete with other cloud storage giants like Google Drive, Rapid Share and Dropbox and also protect Kim Dotcom from future charges and legal legislations. The site uses a 2048-bit RSA key, the type of encryption used with banks when sending your credit card details to other companies for online purchases. This basically means that Kim Dotcom cannot be accused of knowingly storing copyrighted materials because he cannot technically know the content of the files stored on Mega. Only the person who uploaded the files or posses a key knows. With this in mind, Mega is hopefully future proof from ever crashing into the ground like Megaupload causing people to loose their files. This is because the website has been designed and optimized for best performance on Google Chrome. - You're probably never going to get your files back from Megaupload.com - Mega will be extremely slow right now, thousands of user accounts are being made every second. 100,000 users have been created in the first hour. I personally hope for the site to be a huge success, and I have no doubts that it won't. Let's just hope this doesn't lead to the same path that Megaupload.com did. Feel free to discuss on this thread, share your thoughts, upload things and share them too.
I really hope MegaUpload files will come back. Huge chunk of modding history just disappeared.
For some reason I want to be skeptical. But for another reason I want to believe that this will be just like MegaUpload, except better.
I think the site is a bit fucked up [editline]19th January 2013[/editline] also slow yeah
Reeaaaalllllyyyy slow atm, might just be that 1/10 of the people who use the internet are trying to use it right now though.
I really hope MegaUpload files will come back. Huge chunk of modding history just disappeared.
Extremely slim chance of that happening.
Neat that it's back up, but Kim Dotcom is a fucking hilarious lunatic. really hoping its not a gigantic honeypot
Extremely slim chance of that happening.
He said they were going to try IIRC
what's the lure of this? there are tons of other uploaders which work perfectly, sometimes even much better than megaupload ever did some sort of misplaced nostalgia for when the internet was still the wild west? sentimental value?

You can bitch all you want about the patenting and copyright system and intellectual property, and there are some very good points to be made there, but it's still friggin illegal and he made a good chunk of money off of it.
how come there's only black people in the song video
I hate third-level domains like mega.co.nz eww
$50 for 4TB? Get the fuck out of here, that's awesome

Got my account
So... There was MegaPorn. What's the pornography version to this?
The website seems to be running pretty slow, is it working for anyone else? Makes sense if it's slow on launch day though
The website seems to be running pretty slow, is it working for anyone else? Makes sense if it's slow on launch day though
Just give it time when doing things. I suggest making the account and nothing else.
I'm tired of those "Best viewed with IE/Chrome/Firefox/Safari" messages
Maybe they're trying to tell you something
I'm tired of those "Best viewed with IE/Chrome/Firefox/Safari" messages
Get a decant browser then. :v:
Your 2048-bit RSA public / private key pair is now being created. To strengthen the key, we have collected entropy from your mouse movements and keystroke timings. Yeah. For some reason it won't even load for me.
Get a decant browser then. :v:
Opera is decent (and IE is too)
Took about 5mins to load that for me, then it crashed
Lol. I got it working although for some reason nothing is uploading. Edit Apparently creating a folder just sends it in a endless loop.
Can upload using Linux, can't download Also, fuck flash. [T]http://i.imgur.com/HKT8RBE.jpg[/T]
