• Some hobbyist Japanese decides to make an actual full size working mech

I've always loved Keith thompsons Mechs, mostly because of how the look like tanks, only on legs.
It probably consumes so much power that if I bought it my electricity bills would be higher than they already are. Until they make a mini fusion reactor in it, it is just impractical.
Not really a mech in my opinion if it's using those wheels.
Battlefield 2142 Mech I can't wait.
I vastly prefer mechs like this (Western mechs??) as opposed to the typical anthropomorphic ones you see in a lot of animes They just look so much more intimidating and badass
Reminds me of this Japanese guy that made a pvc exoskeleton that you walked around in and stood at like 10 feet tall. It was awesome, but I can't find the video.
Reminds me of [t]http://images.wikia.com/jamescameronsavatar/images/a/a2/Screenshot062.jpg[/t] from Avatar. They were fucking awesome IMO!
When I saw that movie I wondered why this isn't possible already. I think with enough funding we could get mechs like this within 1-2 decades.
Mechs are awesome, they are however as useless as they are awesome. No-one in his right mind would use mechs for warfare when they can just use tanks instead.
Good fucking god that is so cool.
Nah, Mechs will eventually work together with tanks, they won't replace them. Mechs would probably be used to harsher mountainous terrains and most likely infantry support, not to mention the tons of civilian applications they will have for warehouses, moving hazardous materials more efficiently, the list goes on.
Western battle mechs tend to be designed like that, with the idea being that they intimidate you. Similar to how a lot of the more expensive cars are designed so that the front end looks pissed off or growling, the focus is on aggression and intimidation. By comparison, Eastern mechs try to look more human and relateable.

WH40k titans come to mind, with huge guns, massive metal structure and gothic-skeletal faces (in real life however they would be just a very very expensive terror weapon that would not match it's price with actual military prowess and usefulness). [editline]11th May 2012[/editline]
One step further, in getting Iron Man, for real.
Not really, the thing we lack to make an Iron Man suit is the power source really, not much else (ok I'm not sure how repulsors would work, but the rest is feasible today, with absurd costs of course).

There's exceptions of course, like the Atlas in battletech with it's skull head
I personally drooled over DE:HR's robot, this one: I literally creamed my pants when I saw it ingame, both intimidating and a sweet clean design, while staying clunky and not 'super agile robot'-ish. Robots and mechs are awesome, although anthropomorfic ones tend to look kinda silly to me excluding a couple of ones.
Cool, impractical, and cool.
I never really understood what the hell they were exactly... What are they? Aliens? [editline]11th May 2012[/editline] Sans the teenage girl on period mood kind of nature please.
Well, judging from everything that happens, I would go with something like a demon.
Chicks dig giant robots.
I watched Transformers, I know woman are terrified of giant robots because you can see them fleeing from them in the streets of New York!
When I saw that movie I wondered why this isn't possible already. I think with enough funding we could get mechs like this within 1-2 decades.
If you threw the budget of a main battle tank at any semi-competent electrical and mechanical engineer you'd get a usable mech. The issue is "usable" doesn't mean much for a device with knees (ruins combat applications) and arms that are more fragile than dedicated industrial machinery. Necessity is the mother of invention, and we don't need these.
I hope they eventually make something like this:
When I saw that movie I wondered why this isn't possible already. There is a reason they try to make tanks so sleek and compact, you want to make yourself as small a target as possible, not a bigger one. The only benefit a mech in a combat role has is maybe being able to manipulate larger weapons but even than that's nothing a tank can't do better.
I can totally see this being mass produced for the army.
I hope they eventually make something like this:
That looks a lot like the viking in starcraft 2 in fact, i'm pretty sure that is a viking but where is that pic from?
I wanna see a Zaku.

Tiberian Sun anyone?
