i wonder if apple has ever come out with their own idea
they have.
It loads much faster than GMaps did without WebGL. I don't know which one is faster now. The interface is horrible though. THERE ARE TWO SEARCH BARS WITH DIFFERENT FUNCTIONALITY! And GMaps had the birds eye view too, it got it much later though. [editline]11th May 2012[/editline] We're talking about the web versions right? Because I have no idea what the iOS versions are like.
I only see one search bar. [t]http://i.cubeupload.com/Gjxds8.png[/t] Just looked it up, Windows Live Search had two search bars. That was years ago.
they have.
Style is so innovative.
I bet the name will be iMaps. Calling it now. Or iMaps+, for that matter. [editline]11th May 2012[/editline]
they have.
The idea to steal everyone else's ideas?
I can see why. Google maps is pretty damn huge, it'll be a hard but I hope they make it very effective that way Google expands google maps!
And then Apple will try to patent/sue.
Flight Simulator, with HQ land mods, is already like that.
Care to link? I couldnt find anything relevant to FSX ground mods. As for the maps: I want offline map navigation that doesnt cost 60 Euros (likeTomTom). The price of mobile data is ridiculous here, and there's barely any 3G coverage. "Hopefully" they might release a web version so I could use it on android.
"Siri, I need directions to my house from here." "Directions for: The closest apple store" "No, I need to get home. I'm lost" "You can buy episodes of Lost on iTunes" "...."
iTreasureMap?
iMap, a separate Apple device that will feature their new *and original* map system fit with a new social networking application that will in total cost $250
who cares as long as it can get me directions to the nearest checker's
Inb4 their idea of competition is patenting maps.

Seems it does that if I switch my language to German. That's odd. Then again Microsoft always lags behind in their products when outside the US.
It can't even get away with social features, since google already has Latitude. Besides who the fuck is gonna stop using google maps? it's so hilariously deeply ingrained in peoples minds that they're not gonna use apple maps, cause google maps are easy as fuck to access and use and there is no reason to change.
A bit like how nobody use safari on macs.
Can't wait for the iStreet priuses!
Gotta love how Facepunch instantly dismisses every new thing like this. "It's Apple so it has to be shit!!!!!!111! Am I right guys?" We know next to nothing about it right now, stop jumping to conclusions. Besides, even if the majority of people won't be using it some competition is always good.

Besides Google Maps is a free service so there's hardly gonna be competition.

Everybody wins in the end.
Inb4 their idea of competition is patenting maps.
Dammnit, i was going to make a joke about Apple filing copyright and then suing Google.
Well, if Apple's maps actually turn out have some useful features that Google Maps don't have yet, it'll be an incentive for Google to improve their service. Everybody wins in the end.
Features such as?
Features such as?
Being overpriced and claiming innovation while lacking features that everyone wants that won't come until second or third generation.

Steams done it for so long, they basically dominated the field. If ANYONE gets close, they can expand to a huge degree right now, problem free.
Build Google maps rival. Sue Google for copyright infringement. God bless America.
I'm sure apple fans will adore it anyway, then when they all use it against me. I'll be like "The technology has been around for years" and they'll be like "Yeah, but Apple made it public and so everyone can use it and its so amazing". Its really annoying that apple buys other companies then claims it as their own.
some competition is always good.
this.
Google needs to add more countries to streetview. It's a bit lacking outside US/Mainland EU
