Spain's navy rammed into a Greenpeace dinghy during a protest in the Atlantic Ocean against oil exploration near the Canary Islands on Saturday, injuring four of its activists, one of them seriously, the environmental organization said. However, the navy disputed that account. The navy said it dispatched two boats from one of its ships in the area to prevent Greenpeace from boarding a large oil drilling ship and that one of its activists was seriously injured when she fell out of her dinghy and was hit by its propellers.
http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/activist-hurt-protest-off-canary-islands-26938809
No one messes with the Spanish armada.
The navy said it dispatched two boats from one of its ships in the area to prevent Greenpeace from boarding a large oil drilling ship and that one of its activists was seriously injured when she fell out of her dinghy and was hit by its propellers.
this one sounds more plausible
Hit by the ships propellers? She's pretty lucky she didn't get minced
Hit by the ships propellers? She's pretty lucky she didn't get minced
I think it was her Dinghy's propellers, not those of the Drilling Vessel. Those wouldn't mince her, but they would pretty seriously fuck her up, which is consistent with "serious injuries."
Hit by the ships propellers? She's pretty lucky she didn't get minced
I've always had this uncanny fear of swimming anywhere near any kind of a boat for this reason. Might get sucked in/chopped
FYI running your boats around any military's navy is never a good idea
No one messes with the Spanish armada.
Except for the English and their fire ships
Except for the English and their fire ships
The English Navy did have the weather on their side too.
I have mixed feelings on Greenpeace. I like their cause and I support direct action, but I dislike their stances on some things (like GMO's and nuclear energy). [editline]15th November 2014[/editline] Earth First! is a bit more up my alley.
I typically don't see eye to eye with Greenpeace, but if this video is anything to go by the Spanish Navy may have been a bit excessive. Although, the protesters did get rammed after making a mad dash for the oil vessel. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=f02_1416067462
Deserved it, lucky they didn't get shot.
because i had to [editline]16th November 2014[/editline]
The Spanish Inquisition oh my!
If the navy decided to ram them off it's because they were rushing full speed like dipshits, they were asking for it.
Greenpeace wants to do good, but their methods are very disagreeable.
Greenpeace wants to do good, but their methods are very disagreeable.
Some of their motives aren't really great either to be honest, most of the time they are ignorant by choice to some issues. They are often very reactionary and at worst completely retarded.
I've always had this uncanny fear of swimming anywhere near any kind of a boat for this reason. Might get sucked in/chopped
Ever since speed 2 iv'e had that fear. Fuck you movies.
Here's the video of it: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=f02_1416067462
Fucking idiots, no wonder they're considered a terrorist organization. They should be grateful they didn't get shot.
Here's the video of it: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=f02_1416067462
That looks pretty fun till that boat hit the the guy on the head, then I heard the screams and decided it was best to close the tab.
I live in lanzarote in the canary islands, and fucking hell, the news wont shut up,they literally said at one point "this could end all humanity as we know it" What?
Greenpeace's methods are very questionable. Recently they sent out false-information letters to residents all over switzerland warning about the hazards of nuclear-powerplants. They used Logos and names of official government branches, basically impersonating them. (German Source: http://www.20min.ch/schweiz/news/story/29794634) They even went as far as trying to infiltrate a nuclear powerplant, and drilling holes into the outer hull of the nuclear reactor. (German Source: http://www.20min.ch/schweiz/news/story/13240765) They are now being sued, and if they get prosecuted, they would have to pay for damages around half a million dollar.
They're terrorists and pirates, plain and simple.
And should be treated as such. Their ships should be seized by navies, or fired upon if they fail to surrender. In all honesty i'm surprised they did that to a nuclear reactor. If you even tried to do that here you'd get shot and killed by the guards, and if you made it you'd get your ass thrown into jail for the rest of your any number of charges that would be perfectly applicable.

Greenpeace is constantly trying to prove that nuclear stuff is dangerous by trying to cause disasters and invading nuclear sites. The thing is, the authorities typically don't react with full blown responses when that happens (especially on land sites) because it'd show their actual response tactics and it'd be seen as overreacting. Of course the people at Greenpeace are too dumb to get that and claim those sites are poorly guarded because they could enter and stick around for more than a minute, regardless of the fact the only reason they could hang out for so long is because they were identified as harmless before they even set foot on the site.
Good on the Spanish navy. I'm definitely not an expert on maritime law, but boarding a ship against its will sounds a whole lot like piracy to me. I'm not sure why they had to ram them full-speed though. Couldn't you just take a spear/harpoon/other sharp object and drive it through the inflatable part of those dinghys? Or am I wrong in thinking that there is air in them?

Better to be soft on a bunch of idiots and leave those who could cause actual harm in complete dark when it comes to what they're facing.
