'Tomb Raider' executive producer Ron Rosenberg has announced that the lead character Lara Croft will be the victim of a potential rape in an upcoming release of the popular video game. As reported by Kotaku.com, Rosenberg said that there will be a scenario where island scavengers attempt to rape the popular heroine: “She is literally turned into a cornered animal. It’s a huge step in her evolution: she’s forced to either fight back or die.” Rosenberg added that male players will want to rescue Croft, not enjoy the assault: "They’re more like ‘I want to protect her.’ There’s this sort of dynamic of ‘I’m going to this adventure with her and trying to protect her. She’s definitely the hero but, you’re kind of like her helper. When you see her have to face these challenges, you start to root for her in a way that you might not root for a male character.”
I want to play that scene where they attempt to rape her, but not do anything. editL fine whatever, I'll play that one scene where they do attempt to rape her, BUT ILL DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.,
"As reported by Kotaku.com" Oh, so is that why this is super sensational? This argument has been going in the News Node too.
I know they're doing that for powerful emotional effect but christ the thought of rape makes me want to puke.
There is going to be a lot of hate from this... A LOT.
There is going to be a lot of hate from this... A LOT.
There shouldn't be.
holy sensationalist title batman from what I know one of the mooks just grabs her, you've given a QTE, and if you fail he just stabs her and she dies straight away. I don't know what's so rape-y about this.
I know they're doing that for powerful emotional effect but christ the thought of rape makes me want to puke.
Same here, I can't stand it when it's in movies or TV shows. It makes me never want to watch the show again. The act is just always in the back of my head and I can't get over it. Some shows draw you in so close to the characters that it's like it's happening to a friend. If a friend of mine was raped, I'd be so devastated.
There shouldn't be.
While I agree with what that guy is saying, there is a HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE gap between dudebro shooters and RAPE.
I'm already so tired of hearing of this bullshit. My opinion is here: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1190735&p=36333736&viewfull=1#post36333736 Also, late.
I will only play this if the scene in question involves a pinball machine.
She doesn't get raped, They attempt to rape her. If you don't do anything and just let the event play through she gets killed. Everyone wants gaming to grow up and be more mature, but everyone flips shit if there's something controversial.
There shouldn't be.
Well there still is. There are a lot of people out there that don't want to deal with the idea of rape. Hell, I'm so sick of listening to it on the news almost every day somebody is getting raped or a child is molested, tortured and killed. I can't stand that stuff. Call me a pussy but I'd rather not be desensitized to that stuff. There are plenty of other plot elements a developer could use to attract almost everybody and avoid touchy things like rape.
I don't see a problem with this.
If we ever want future generations to think of games as a respected artistic medium, we have to stop shying away from stuff like this. Rape as a narrative device has a place and a purpose. It can be abused, but it can also be used for great effect. If you cannot distinguish between real and fictional rape in how you view, you should perhaps take a step back and think about that. From what I've read in RPS' impressions, the developers crafted danger and death scenarios with great care, at least in the introductory levels. I think attempted rape as a stylistic choice is perfectly fine there to set the tone, it fits with the rest of the picture I'm getting from it.

She is literally turned into a cornered animal. It’s a huge step in her evolution
brilliant, in order for the character to evolve she must be sexually assaulted!
While I agree with what that guy is saying, there is a HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE gap between dudebro shooters and RAPE.
Rape happens in real life all the time. Why should a game that is supposed to have plot elements that build character's personalities be devoid of those aspects of real life? Why is it that a game can be violent, gory, involve murder, suicide, genocide, racism, drug abuse, prostitution, and the lot, but as soon as rape comes up, WOAH TOO FAR MAN.
from what I know one of the mooks just grabs her, you've given a QTE
a QTE!? adding insult to injury basically.

http://niggaupload.com/images/ItKhg.gif
Woah hold up
Yes it might be harsh but this would also show that she became a lot tougher (Since ya know, this is about the origins of Lara Croft), i'm okay with this Also i hate how things like rape, nudity and whatnot is acceptable in movies but once its a game it should be banned everywhere.

We have rape in other forms of media, why not video games? Oh I forgot, they're for kids. Okay, no rape.

It can physically and mentally destroy someone for the rest of their life. A person who is dead no longer feels anything. A rape victim is haunted for the rest of their life.
They attempt to rape you? more reason to shoot their balls in revenge
I love how a majority of the people who browse FP love Game of Thrones and that show/book series is full of forced sex. They defend it because its written/shown and develops the characters' personalities. They're right. But oh no, if it's in a game, even subtle, it's awful.
video games are still very young and immature as a medium i think any attempt to do something as serious as rape atm would come off as extremely hamfisted and offensive

Should games not involve that because that goes too far too?
brilliant, in order for the character to evolve she must be sexually assaulted!
Putting your female protagonist at the mercy of men worked so well for Samus in The Other M, it must work for Lara Croft! Didn't they do essentially the same thing with a female superhero, and in the end it horribly tarnished her reputation?
