https://www.businessinsider.com/bob-woodward-book-mattis-sean-spicer-sunday-morning-tv-shows-2018-9 Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis lashed out at Sean Spicer after the former White House press secretary repeatedly tried to get him to go on Sunday-morning talk shows, according to the journalist Bob Woodward's soon-to-be-released book, a partial passage of which was tweeted by an Associated Press reporter on Tuesday. Spicer, a US Navy reserve commander, apparently tried numerous times to get the secretary of defense to go on television, finally causing an exasperated Mattis to respond with a statement far clearer than a simple "no." "Sean," Mattis said, according to the excerpt of the book, "Fear," tweeted by the AP's Zeke Miller. "I've killed people for a living. If you call me again, I'm going to f---ing send you to Afghanistan. Are we clear?" The secretary of defense has made only one appearance on a network show since the start of Donald Trump's presidency. He appeared on CBS's "Face the Nation" in May 2017, when he told the host John Dickerson that nothing kept him awake at night but that "I keep other people awake at night." Just before the latest Pentagon briefing, Mattis told reporters he took no pleasure in standing up in front of the cameras and addressing a large audience. Woodward's book — which is set to be released next Tuesday and has been the topic of much discussion this week — also says that Mattis privately criticized Trump for having the understanding of "a fifth- or sixth- grader" after a particularly trying meeting, The Washington Post reported. The Post reported that the book also says Mattis had to rein in Trump after a phone call in which the president ranted about wanting to "f---ing kill" Syrian President Bashar Assad. In response to Woodward's reporting, Mattis issued a statement Tuesday condemning the book as a "uniquely Washington brand" of "fiction." "The contemptuous words about the President attributed to me in Woodward's book were never uttered by me or in my presence," Mattis said. "While I generally enjoy reading fiction, this is a uniquely Washington brand of literature, and his anonymous sources do not lend credibility." He added: "In serving in this administration, the idea that I would show contempt for the elected Commander-in-Chief, President Trump, or tolerate disrespect to the office of the President from within our Department of Defense, is a product of someone's rich imagination." Also apparently Trump calls him moderate dog now.

The only Saint I'll pray to.

If he trained as a sniper, he could wear a ghillie suit and complete his transformation into bush that he has always dreamt of.
I'd be pissed too if chain of command was changed and I'd suddenly have to work with total morons like Spicer and Trump.
Mattis is well known and beloved in the Corps for his no-bullshit attitude, hell he has probably some of the best fucking quotes you'd only dream of seeing plastered around. "The first time you blow someone away is not an insignificant event. That said, there are some assholes in the world that just need to be shot." "You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn't wear a veil. You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them. Actually it's quite fun to fight them, you know. It's a hell of a hoot. It's fun to shoot some people. I'll be right up there with you. I like brawling." "Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet." Yes he is the one that coined this phrase. "I come in peace. I didn’t bring artillery. But I’m pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you fuck with me, I’ll kill you all." This all comes from a man who says that we need to show tact and restraint when we're dealing with complex situtions like Afghanistan and Iraq. But he isn't going to sugar coat you or the people he's talking about, he wants to get the message across that he's and be extension our troops are not to be fucked with. I just wish he became Commandant, but sadly he didn't.
This dude is terrifying. And in terms of a Secretary of Defense, I wouldn't want it any other way.
Can't forget the best one, "PowerPoint makes us stupid."
when he told the host John Dickerson that nothing kept him awake at night but that "I keep other people awake at night." That is one hell of a quote.
Mattis is probably the closest person the Marines can get to Chesty in this day and age. The whole "Moderate Dog" thing makes my blood boil.
"Just before the latest Pentagon briefing, Mattis told reporters he took no pleasure in standing up in front of the cameras and addressing a large audience" Precisely why he's going to get booted off this administration. Anyone who doesn't spend 23 hours of their day swearing fealty to their master on twitter and fox &friends is a threat in trump's eyes.
Man, they totally ripped that one off in some cheap, Jason Statham movie. Can’t remember the title for the life of me, but it was in the trailer
Honestly, Mattis needs to be made defense secretary for all administrations for the next twenty years. Fucker is pure class.
you aren't forgetting another popular media product that also uses this phrase are you
Maybe, but I just can’t quite put my hat on it
There's no a lot that I like about US matters nowadays, but despite his callsign "mad dog" Mattis seems like such a level-headed and down-to-earth no-frills guy despite being legitimately scary. I particularly loved his comment about the State Department funding and US diplomacy: "If you don't fund the State Department fully, then I need to buy more ammunition ultimately," Mattis said, before members of Congress at a National Security Advisory Council meeting, the US Global Leadership Coalition notes. "So I think it's a cost-benefit ratio. The more that we put into the State Department's diplomacy, hopefully the less we have to put into a military budget as we deal with the outcome of an apparent American withdrawal from the international scene," Mattis continued. https://nordic.businessinsider.com/mattis-state-department-funding-need-to-buy-more-ammunition-2017-2 No pretense behind his comments, just "The US needs to actively pursue diplomacy or else we'll end up having to kill a lot of people".
It's always the generals like Eisenhower and Mattis that don't want the huge military buildup and prefer diplomacy https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/250/498/dd3.png
I like Mattis. More talking means less shooting.
I tend to think that duality might be common in people that actually harbor a desire to fight and kill, or else think they're perfectly capable of killing their own kind.
Because they're the ones who have to send young men into conflicts they won't all return from. Politicians get to delegate that shit away and feel emotionally detatched from it, generals have to plan for bringing back some percentage of their "employees" in coffins.
The only good pick in office right now.
Apparently Scott Gottlieb is doing an okay job at the FDA, subverting expectations as a former lobbyist
Cool! I had no idea!
One thing to note about Mattis is he's very bipartisan. It's a small detail but since taking post as the SECDEF you'll notice at damn near every public function he partakes in he is wearing a purple tie, the combination of red and blue, to signify that he's not about the politics and is willing to work with whoever he needs to. He's one hell of a guy, and if he were to run for president he'd have my vote.
Fuck it, Mattis 2020. I’d take him over Cory Booker any day.
That's what I like about him, he's not into the political side of things, he just wants to do what's best for the US Military and it's personnel.
