Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is one of the most financially successful of all time. The five films have grossed over $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office. Now it looks like the house of mouse will be moving forward with a sixth film.
According to Omega Underground via Geeks Worldwide, director Joachim Rønning is expected to return to direct the film, without directing partner Espen Sandberg. A script is seemingly being worked on by writers Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio, and Jeff Nathanson. Kaya Scodelario is contracted to another film but it is not known if she or
other past actor will indeed return.
The last pirates film Dead Men Tell No Tales ended up making $794.1M worldwide for the studio, dominating the Memorial Day weekend in 2017.
All eyes will be on if Disney and whether or not they decide to bring Johnny Depp back as Jack Sparrow. Depp has come under a lot of scrutiny for his recent behind the scene antics. Disney made the choice to fire Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn for past tweets. So will Disney look at Depp and do the same? We will have to wait and see.
Rønning is currently busy working on Maleficent II, so production on Pirates 6 wouldn’t start until at least summer of 2020. Stay tuned for updates as they come.
This is the moment of truth. If Disney keeps Johnny "Wife-beater" Depp on and still refuses to rehire James Gunn, no reasonable person should ever defend them again.
In the last one literally every curse in the world was broken, how can they make a new story?
Pirates 5 made 800 million dollars. It's still a very profitable franchise.
Yeah it's just a buisness decision if they keep Depp on while firing Gunn. GotG 3 will likely make yuge amounts of money regardless of Gunn's directing or not, while Depp is what makes the Pirates movies
Prequel to one of the previous films, retconning that story bit because "evil bad thing does X and undoes good things." or something.
Who the fuck is going out and watching this shit because I don't know anyone that actually even cares about this series.
Fuck me I just remembered they teaseDavy Jones in Pirates 5 when fucking every curse in the world was broken, and he's still a monster.
China, primarily. 172 million of the 622 million foreign revenue came from there. It did well in many other countries, but China is undoubtedly the big reason 6 is getting greenlit.
I mean barbosa lived so....
I did. I liked it.
Can we stop putting Johnny Depp in movies please?
To Davy Jones' locker with, ye!
I think the only thing I liked about Dead Men Tell No Tales was Jarvier Bardem and his ghostly crew. The Poseidon's Trident stuff was bonkers.
Probably using the post credit scene, since Davy Jones is now free.
they showed davy jones in the post credits cuz every movie is the mcu now
but if they want to make more sense he'd have to be human.
Pirates without Depp wouldn’t make a dime, so I don’t see that happening. Or how about a new franchise about that period with a different tone?
Were there Barbary pirates in that time period? Could be interesting.
Why? Am I missing something here, because Depp is a great actor
A lot of people would argue he's regressed. Just as many would argue it doesn't matter - the real issue is that he's a wife beater that still has a job in the age of #Metoo.
5 was fucking abysmal. It will almost be challenging to make a worse film. But they'll probably pull it off anyway.
Holy shit I didn't even realize that 5 had come and gone. I was just thinking the other day "when the hell was that 5th PotC movie supposed to come out?"
I like these movies sort of in the way I like Transformers movies, sometimes you just want to watch some pirates fight and ships battle, not many movies do the whole age of sail thing anymore. Same with sudo-scifi like Transformers with giant robots fighting, it's just them and Pacific Rim.
Pirates 6 is all fun and great, but I think my big object of concern is they're apparently in the process of making a Maleficent II
there isnt even a horse to beat anything, it's a mangled pile of hair blood and bones
Yeah the ending of Pirates 5 was a bit... weird. If the curse was broken, then how is Will still alive considering his human heart is inside a locked box?
Literally every PotC movie has had stingers.
Everyone knows hearts are just optional.
Surprise, it's Voodoo! Baron Samedi is the new big-bad and the plot is majorly about Maman Brigitte having a couples dispute with Baron Samedi, cause a shit-ton of new curses to flood out because J. Sparrow was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I actually liked POTC5. Wasn't as good as the original, but better then the previous ones, and the nostalgic callbacks to the original movie kept me hooked. And yeah, that after-credits scene does provide a setup to bring back what is arguably the most memorable villain of the franchise.
