https://www.abqjournal.com/1132259/abq-man-targeted-youtube-celebrities.html
A YouTube celebrity couple hid in the closet late last month, calling 911 while police say a man searched through their home in Austin, armed with a gun and firing at least one round inside the house. Less than 10 minutes later, that man was dead in the driveway. The couple had not been harmed. Christopher Giles, who police described as “single, lonely and disturbed,” had made the 11-hour drive from Albuquerque, according to documents filed in the 2nd Judicial District Court. And his phone was full of notes suggesting he had “developed a fondness” for the woman, Megan Turney, and a dislike of her boyfriend, Gavin Free. ... According to that search warrant affidavit, around 3:40 a.m. on Jan. 26, Turney and Free awoke to the sound of breaking glass and a gunshot. They hid in their bedroom closet and called 911 while Giles searched their home for them. When he couldn’t find the couple, Giles left, encountering Austin Police Department officers on his way out. The officers found Giles backing out of the driveway in his Lincoln sedan with a New Mexico license plate and ordered him to stop. Instead, they heard a single gunshot coming from the car. An officer returned fire. Giles was pronounced dead on the scene, a .45 caliber handgun near his hand, according to the affidavit. Turney and Free were not harmed.
I am very surprised that I have heard nothing about this anywhere on the internet. It's terrifying how bad this got...
‘I want Gavin Free to die alone, with no children.’ ”
What the actual fuck. Gavin Free is one of the nicest Youtubers I've seen. Glad they're alright.
Good god that's fucking awful. I hope something as horrific as being hunted inside of your own home by a deranged man doesn't change them for the worse. That's emotionally traumatizing shit.
headlines are making it seem like he was targeting youtubers in general rather than a couple who happened to be popular ones
That's some wild shit. Being carefree about your home address or getting doxxed is fucking crazy since it potentially invites the most mentally disturbed motherfuckers to your doorstep. I'm 100% sure the people who make "Don't come to my house ever" videos don't advertise their address willy nilly. Most celebs don't really ask for their personal privacy to be taken away, but it is expected in this digital age as personal addresses and contact information can easily be traced. You can be a celeb, some dude who said the wrong things, or a streamer just playing games; and there is a fair chance someone will look up your personal background to find dirt to exploit. There are still some mentally ill fans out there who will develop obsession because of some unspoken bond/connection when they get entertained by the entertainer. Hollywood celebs have had their houses broken into, John Lennon was shot and killed; and a couple years ago, a Youtuber musician was killed at one of her concerts. For further examples, Boxxy was doxxed and people came to her doorstep; Casey Neistat has strict warnings and a security camera on his door; and someone randomly walked into Philip DeFranco's studio while he was filming. People think "doxxing" relates to whatever opinion/viewpoint people hate (ex. Anita Sarkeesian), but it's also about doing it to positive entertainers. It's fucked up.
Holy Shit, I've not noticed Gavin mention this in any AH Videos. That's fucking mental, glad he is alright. I know hes mentioned and shown how many security cameras hes got around his home. Glad they are both okay.

People wanting to kill people they're obsessed with isn't something new tbh, same thing happened with Bjork and that creepy fuck who ended up shooting himself on camera
Jesus, what a headline to read this morning. Thousand times better then Gavin or Meg being dead though. Also lucky that guy was apparently as stupid as using a gun to break in, make too much noise and doesn't search or confirm their presence. On top he took the easy way out. Scary how obsessed "fans" can react. Besides what usaokay posted Christina Grimmie comes to my mind, her being killed by a single obsessed fan. Especially hard for internet celebrities because they can't just afford the same kind of security an actual Hollywood star can but are often seen just as popular and obsessed by fans.
headlines are making it seem like he was targeting youtubers in general rather than a couple who happened to be popular ones
I meant 'YouTubers' as in 'Couple who are YouTubers' but I can see how it can also look like 'youtubers in general'. I suppose a mod could change it to 'YouTuber Couple'? [editline]12th February 2018[/editline]
I guess it's to not motivate more crazy idiots to do this to other people.
Makes me wonder if I'm part of the problem by posting this story, although I did post this because I was hoping it was fake and wanted someone else to confirm whether it happened or not.
If this is true (Rooster Teeth and AH Subreddits have been deleting any threads on it, no official comment yet though), I really hope it doesn't affect either of them too badly. I'm pretty up to date on AH videos but I don't know if Gavs put a hold on filming, I know hes been tweeting as if nothing has happened.

Apparently it was confirmed on Meg's patreon, but they're trying to take down any articles containing sensitive info. And the subreddit has been asked by RT to take down posts regarding this.
Fucking hell, the fact that I watch their content on a daily basis is just fucking me up. The fact that these content creators who provide endless hours of entertainment and that have helped me laugh in times where I couldn't otherwise were this close to death is just fucking shocking.

The Man from Boston made his move [sp]Sorry, this is what I think of first when I think of Gavin[/sp]
‘I want Gavin Free to die alone, with no children.’ ”
Projecting, much?
Fucking hell. My brother used to play Halo with Gav on XBOX Live before he was a part of RT. I've been following his work a bit since, and this is stunningly horrible to hear about.
Jesus Christ this is unbelievable I feel so bad for both of them
Holy shit Gavin's one of my favorite people like ever. I love his stuff. Why the fuck would anyone try and kill him in his own house?

There was a time when I wanted to be successful and popular but that time is long gone. Ever since "doxxing" has become a thing I've become increasingly paranoid and this shit just confirms my fears.
Apparently it was confirmed on Meg's patreon, but they're trying to take down any articles containing sensitive info. That's going to be hard to get rid of... EDIT: Someone should contact them on twitter and tell them about this article, perhaps they can do something about it.
This is fucked up, Can't even imagine what would have happened if he did get killed

-snip this is in poor taste-
When I saw the title I was half expecting it to be related to bad advise (bitconnect or something similar). This is so much crazier and I don't even know how mentally they could get over the fact that someone was in the house trying to kill them.
Thats crazy, hope they aren't too shaken up about it.
Doxxing should be illegal.
This is the kind of shit that scares me to the fucking core. There was a time when I wanted to be successful and popular but that time is long gone. Ever since "doxxing" has become a thing I've become increasingly paranoid and this shit just confirms my fears.
You can't fix or ameliorate stupid, psychotic or sociopathic, and you can't live your life as if you can. If you spend all of your time worrying about maybe, you'll never get anything done. Also popularity is hilariously overrated especially in the magical fantasy world of internet progressivism where people are immaturely and naively supposed to be actual Disney cartoon caricatures 25 hours of every day to day. Successful, on the other hand is doable, and can be found under the realm of hard work, determination and getting lucky. Culture and cultivate what is good, and avoid and remove what is bad on your end of the stick, and be mindful of what other people are doing, but if you're passionate or driven about doing certain things, it's almost always on you to see them through, and accomplish them, and if you spend all the time worrying about people you may never even meet, you're gonna have a hard time doing much of anything. The other side of this equation is the other side of the internet. As soon as the internet became monetized and companies like google and apple refuse to respect or treat the "citizens" of the internet like people and instead like commoditized cash pinatas where their private information is up for sale and has no real controls or protections, people's private lives will be up for open display, courtesy of and for the almighty dollar, because there's no incentive for local and provincial agencies to do otherwise. Until companies first start getting punished for leaving shit like this out in the open, there's no incentive to carry that privacy to government and logistical agencies likewise, and at this point it's going to take a biblical turnaround to get anything done about it, and until companies are forced to care about protecting this information, they'll continue not to.
I can imagine Geoff and Ryan are gonna hug their kids a little tighter today It's gotta be hard to be aware that people could hurt your loved ones and you can't to anything about it
