A Florida man is fighting for his life after he fell from an Indonesian rooftop chasing a monkey that stole his Pittsburgh Steelers cap. Jeff “Swede” Swedenhjelm, 40, is currently paralyzed from the chest down after he fell 33 feet from a roof in Bali on Monday. “He’s a die-hard Steelers fan,” daughter Lyric Sweenhjelm told The Post by phone Sunday. “We didn’t think that he would get into this mess but he’s an all-or-nothing guy and he’s fearless. You can’t buy a Steelers hat in Bali, so he wasn’t’ gonna let it go.” The family is now raising money via a GoFundMe page to transport him from Bali to Kuala Lumpur, where they believe he’ll receive better medical treatment. They raised $50,000 of the $70,000 needed to medevac him, and then an anonymous pal of his offered to loan the family the rest. “It’s Christmas there already, so someone helped us and gave us $20,000 as an advance,” Lyric said. “It’s someone that he met over there. They are working on it right now to get it wired to us. What they did was amazing.” Lyric turns 21 on Tuesday and said all she wants for Christmas and her birthday is for her dad to recover. “We’re so thankful to everyone,” she said of the donations the family has received.

Swedenhjelm has emerged from a medically induced coma and is now battling pneumonia that arose as a complication of his paralysis, according to his daughter. It could take up to three months for him to regain movement in his extremities and more than a year to walk again, according to the fund-raising page.
Well at least he's not dead, and from the looks of it, is gonna be able to walk again (eventually). Just really sucks this happened over a hat. -snip not really funny. Glad they raised a fair amount of money. Hope they somehow financed the rest.
He did, however, get the hat back. “When he fell, some villagers found him, and they kept the hat with him,” Lyric said. “He wears it all the time — it’s a black hat, but honestly kinda brown now because it’s been through so much.”
This guy needs to live so he can tell one hell of a story.
-snip not really funny.
Tbh it's so sad but fuckin stupid. Like why risk your life over a /hat/
A lot of these places have monkeys that steal items from tourists so that the tourists will barter for their return. I know of a few places where there are banana vendors on the streets that sell bananas specifically so people can trade them to monkeys to get their stuff back. No idea how it is there, though.
Imagine nearly dying for an NFL hat, and it's the Steelers. Noope. Have it monkey.
thank god he got the hat back, don't want the monkeys developing a shit taste in football
“He’s a die-hard Steelers fan,” daughter Lyric Sweenhjelm told The Post by phone Sunday.
Interesting choice of words from the daughter.
Wait so the monkey in raiders of the lost ark could be a real thing?
They are pretty advanced. Diversions are used frequently to prey on people eating at tables. Cameras in particular are likely to get you targeted because nobody is willing to let the monkeys keep it. Basically if you are ever in a place like this and see monkeys being weirdly cute, turn around. A monkey is stealing your stuff.

As a human being I hope he makes a good recovery and that he walks again. As a Ravens fan, he shoulda let the hat go.
he’s an all-or-nothing guy and he’s fearless
fearless or stupid?
What a dumbass
Tbh it's so sad but fuckin stupid. Like why risk your life over a /hat/
Sounds like he's always had it and it had sentimental value.
Don't fuck with monkeys in SEA. They look cute? They will tear your fuckin face. If you ever seen one with babies, don't feed it. Hell, don't even feed them at all, they have more than enough food. If they climb on you, stay calm and chill. When I was at a temple in Thailand, one of the monkeys pounced on a chinese tourist, ripping his bag. The temple dude used a marble slingshot to chase them. Here's me chilling. Notice I got no shiny objects, necklaces, glasses, etc. [t]https://scontent-sit4-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/18766451_10154945245746622_4554877877400824575_o.jpg?oh=bf1cd18aa0d9d1b57606cbf2b8c12c43&oe=5AB52951[/t]
-nope-
I was told that you can get HIV from those things scratching you, is that a myth?
HIV does not contract that way. That's part of the reason while the needle scares were so overblown. Sunlight actually kills HIV, surprisingly. Herpes is what you have to be concerned about with primates and that's usually from bites rather than scratches.
This is crazy because when I was in India 6 months ago a monkey stole my hat on a rooftop as well. I tried to fight him over it but he showed me his teeth so I ran away and eventually I found it on a different rooftop the day after. [t]https://i.imgur.com/zTpoZaS.jpg[/t]
“Since he’s been abroad for so long, he didn’t have any travel insurance or medical insurance there,” Lyric said.
This is a pretty stupid thing to do.
