Alright, I've seen there's been a bit of talk about TF2's old 2007/08 theming greatly being missed. so I thought why not do another fake community update similar to Night of the Living Update (NoTLU) This time we'll be making a ton of mods based off TF2's old theme. "The middle-ish part of a century a lot like the one we just had" All that spytech espionage stuff, the old post war machinery and equipment, barns, factories, hydrolic dams and gravel pits. No cowboys, no indians, no space men, no steampunk, and certainly no bright eye melting neon colours. Just plain and simple, old fashioned Team Fortress 2. Click here for the official rules, deadlines and submission guidelines pages! If you need any inspiration or resources for your concepts and items scroll down for some! If you're going to reference screenshots and promo images, I'd suggest only going through the pre-release library which can be found here http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Promotional_images Here are a few really good ones [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/PqYz1.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/FcaXB.png[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/dUt0m.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/9JEvg.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/8F8lf.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/uiGVA.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/aicnC.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/nZLqD.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/hhkJo.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/gRB6Z.jpg[/img_thumb] I'd only advise going as far as alpine, stay between 2007/08 no where beyond 2009 My biggest suggestion for making items would be stick with neutral colours. Use the old colour palette and metal colours. The only items that had any real teamcolouring were medics items. Treat you weapon designs as if they were a stock weapon, simple name, simple appealing design. For tons of nice pre war and post war weapons here's wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_common_World_War_II_infantry_weapons This article also covers a lot of real weapon conterparts to TF2's weapons. http://www.imfdb.org/w/Team_Fortress_2 Many of TF2's old guns were designed to look like custom hardware. If you want to make something stand out, take different pieces of weapons and put them together to make a more unique design. When making a weapon mod, before submitting it to the workshop please compile it over an existing weapon that already breaks the old theme more specifically many of the melee weapons and promotional items. There are also many hats that break away from the original theme, if you insist on making a hat please submit a weapon along with it. If you want to make concept art the look more like the old TF2 concepts I reccomend the Default Calligarphy brushes that come with Photoshop The flat size 60 is a great one to use Here are some very useful links The CGSociety article on TF2 http://www.cgsociety.org/index.php/CGSFeatures/CGSFeatureSpecial/team_fortress_2 Moby Francke's portfolio http://www.mobyfrancke.com/ The lead art teams original design documents http://www.valvesoftware.com/publications/2007/NPAR07_IllustrativeRenderingInTeamFortress2.pdf List of TF2 Companies (please try not to use the Mann Co. label on ANYTHING} http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Companies TF2 blog artwork page (includes tons of old concept art) http://www.tf2.com/artwork.php Here's a selection of workshop items that already fit the old theme pretty well Now get out there and make some great old fashioned items!
Oh man, I can't wait to see the results of this.
good luck. Pipe dream but it would be freaking amazing if you made a tf2 styled replacement for every hat and weapon in the game.
good luck. Pipe dream but it would be freaking amazing if you made a tf2 styled replacement for every hat and weapon in the game.
we're not aiming to replace every theme broken hat, that could take a lot more ingenuity and time than most of us are capable of. but we can try to get as many as we can :)
Fuck yeah! I can't wait to see the results.
Looking forward to some great mods. Good luck everyone!
So we make things that fit into TF2 sounds fun
was expecting TFC/quake things, but okay.
Why some of the pictures from TF2 while it was in beta? I don't see any of the workshop items you listed fitting into beta TF2 besides maybe that syringe gun.
I have a possibly somewhat realistic pipe dream. You won't be able to make replacements for every offending item now. However, there are already a whole bunch of non-offending community models out there, a significant portion of them made by facepunch members. If you guys prioritize making replacements for the worst offending items that don't already have any reasonable possible replacement now, we could probably combine them with the already existing models to make a giant combo-mod that fixes all the all serious offenders (Deus Ex items, medieval stuff etc.) Does this sound possible/desirable to you guys?
Time to bring out the old James Bond collection... I mean seriously, 75% of Goldeneye reminds you of Hydro 1 2 (spoilers for the ending)
that prerelease fire is inmensely sexy will try my hand at making something for this!
Okay, this'll be the first 3D model I'll ever make, to replace Le Party Phantom. Planning to make a monocle, should be a learning experience as I've never made anything for TF2 before.
Svdl's death rays should go in the OP since they do their jobs very well. Already working on remaking an old wrench of mine. Would this be considered worthy of the "classic" theme? The grey is the old model, I'm re-making it.
Would love to hear what the Hot Dogger's doing on the list of most out of style hats. Fits Scout (pretty plausible he could have served hot dogs at a ball game at one point, makes sense he'd want to be close to sports) and fits the art style fine (well, the envmap is a bit much, but that's Valve's doing).
Well it looks quite silly on the battlefield, no?
Just saw the word "worst" and got a bit peeved to see two of my hats on there, but whatever, not the point of the thread. I snipped it.
-meh-
We certainly didn't mean to offend if anyone feels threatened because their items are on this list
Aw yeah, Flamboyant Flamenco is not on that list! Mission Accomplished. :v:
If we're gonna pick holes, I have no idea what this is doing in the list of items that fit the old theme perfectly: Custom built weaponry is one thing but that's literally two gas cans and a license plate on a stick. edit: ahh you snipped
Aw yeah, Flamboyant Flamenco is not on that list! Mission Accomplished. :v:
I was pretty close to adding it and that sombrero for pyro to that list as well since pyro doesn't have a nationality I don't see why they aren't on the list
Why is the license plate even there?
Hm, let's see.. Hats and miscs can be replaced fairly randomly. It doesn't matter too much if the replacements aren't thematically similar, as cosmetics don't have stats. The Engineer's Deus Ex and Grordbort weapons probably have fitting replacements, as there are a lot of stock-y Engineer weapons with electronics strapped to them out there. The Soldier's Grordbort weapons have Svdl's excellent replacements. Most of the weapons that are unfitting but don't fire any weird bullets/projectiles (Diamondback, Candy Cane etc.) should probably be possible to find replacements for. What I think will be most difficult to replace with existing mods are Pyro's Grordbort weapons and Demoman's Shields and medieval melees. If you're brainstorming stuff, I recommend you to start with thinking about those categories.
Flamethrower also has team colors.
Why is the license plate even there?
It adds character. It's a fine weapon, just doesn't belong in the list in the OP. Thread should stop being about arguments now, I'm sure with a bit of common sense there's plenty that can be made to fit this theme.
guys of course no one will completely agree to everything on any of these lists the point is not to bicker about who said what or anything like that we're here to make great old fashioned items Now lets get to it
If we're gonna pick holes, I have no idea what this is doing in the list of items that fit the old theme perfectly: Custom built weaponry is one thing but that's literally two gas cans and a license plate on a stick. edit: ahh you snipped
How does that not fit? I cannot see your logic. Literally ALL of Pyro's weapons (Not including Pyroland, and Grodborts, and a few others) and either stock weapons welded together or junk made into lethal weaponry.
I was pretty close to adding it and that sombrero for pyro to that list as well since pyro doesn't have a nationality I don't see why they aren't on the list
Well he apparently has it to celebrate Day of the Dead by killing people while wearing it. v:v:v Can still make him look intimidating while wearing it too.
