Set in the immediate aftermath of the zombie apocalypse, L4D's survival co-op mode lets you blast a path through the infected in four unique “movies,” guiding your survivors across the rooftops of an abandoned metropolis, through rural ghost towns and pitch-black forests in your quest to escape a devastated Ground Zero crawling with infected enemies. Each "movie" is comprised of five large maps, and can be played by one to four human players, with an emphasis on team-based strategy and objectives. New technology dubbed "the AI Director" is used to generate a unique gameplay experience every time you play. The Director tailors the frequency and ferocity of the zombie attacks to your performance, putting you in the middle of a fast-paced, but not overwhelming, Hollywood horror movie. -Addictive single player, co-op, and multiplayer action gameplay from the makers of Counter-Strike and Half-Life -Versus Mode lets you compete four-on-four with friends, playing as a human trying to get rescued, or as a zombie boss monster that will stop at nothing to destroy them. -See how long you and your friends can hold out against the infected horde in the new Survival Mode -An advanced AI director dynamically creates intense and unique experiences every time the game is played -20 maps, 10 weapons and unlimited possibilities in four sprawling "movies" -Matchmaking, stats, rankings, and awards system drive collaborative play -Designer's Commentary allows gamers to go "behind the scenes" of the game -Powered by Source and Steam

Set in the zombie apocalypse, Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2) is the highly anticipated sequel to the award-winning Left 4 Dead, the #1 co-op game of 2008. This co-operative action horror FPS takes you and your friends through the cities, swamps and cemeteries of the Deep South, from Savannah to New Orleans across five expansive campaigns. You'll play as one of four new survivors armed with a wide and devastating array of classic and upgraded weapons. In addition to firearms, you'll also get a chance to take out some aggression on infected with a variety of carnage-creating melee weapons, from chainsaws to axes and even the deadly frying pan. You'll be putting these weapons to the test against (or playing as in Versus) three horrific and formidable new Special Infected. You'll also encounter five new “uncommon” common infected, including the terrifying Mudmen. Helping to take L4D's frantic, action-packed gameplay to the next level is AI Director 2.0. This improved Director has the ability to procedurally change the weather you'll fight through and the pathways you'll take, in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match your performance. L4D2 promises a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience every time the game is played, custom-fitted to your style of play. -Next generation co-op action gaming from the makers of Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress and Counter-Strike. -Over 20 new weapons & items headlined by over 10 melee weapons – axe, chainsaw, frying pan, baseball bat – allow you to get up close with the zombies -New survivors. New Story. New dialogue. -Five expansive campaigns for co-operative, Versus and Survival game modes. -An all-new multiplayer mode. -Uncommon common infected. Each of the five new campaigns contains at least one new “uncommon common” zombies which are exclusive to that campaign. -AI Director 2.0: Advanced technology dubbed “The AI Director” drove L4D's unique gameplay – customizing enemy population, effects, and music, based upon the players’ performance. L4D 2 features “The AI Director -2.0” which expands the Director’s ability to customize level layout, world objects, weather, and lighting to reflect different times of day. -Stats, rankings, and awards system drives collaborative play
The main purpose of this thread is to have a place where this community can talk about the Left 4 Dead series. games died too fast
I'm mildly upset "Left 4 Thread" wasn't somehow worked into the title [editline]15th October 2017[/editline]
games died too fast
If Valve ever decides to make L4D3 hopefully they either actually continue to regularly update it with serious content updates over time, or go full-on Portal 2 with it and work in fancy schmancy content creation tools so they don't end up with the exact same fate as the previous two.
I still like to cling to the hope that L4D3 is still in the works if not as their first new source 2 release then at least something down the pipeline
Man, I thought this was created because we *finally* got some info on a 3rd game. There's really nothing to talk about anymore, maybe 6 years ago.
Oh hey I just reinstalled the first game a few days ago, never beat the campaigns on Expert.
Oh hey I just reinstalled the first game a few days ago, never beat the campaigns on Expert.
I'm much the same to be honest. I think I only remember completing Swamp Fever once, maybe twice in my entire time playing left 4 dead 2.
The custom campaigns are so awesome, all the good ones out there really stretch the playtime considerably.
games died too fast
There were still opportunities to prolong the game's life and attract more players, such as through making seasonal events and promoting outstanding community campaigns to become official, but alas, Valve seemingly lost all interest in the game after The Sacrifice.
Game was my most played for at least a year and a half, and I still hold fond memories of it. Two of my closest friends met through it, and today they're happily married with two kids.
I remember getting up at like 2 am to play L4D1 when it first came out before having to go to school later that morning. I remember having that feeling of a Christmas morning, just for this game. One of my friends got up at about 5 am and we had a couple of games before heading to school and it was the conversation of the day. We both couldn't wait to get back home to play more.
One thing from L4D I'll never forget is - I joined a random L4D2 match, playing No Mercy. Another person joins randomly, and they recognised my username - turns out it was an online friend from years ago that I had lost contact with. Reconnected with them and have been friends since. Weird to think that if I had never joined that game, I never would've met that friend again. Hoping L4D3 happens at some point. Who knows if it will, but it'd be nice.
I'm much the same to be honest. I think I only remember completing Swamp Fever once, maybe twice in my entire time playing left 4 dead 2.
Expert is a chore because once you put hundreds of hours in the game, you realize how horribly bugged CI and SI are. no matter how perfect you play you'll still get punched from bad coding.
Am I missing something? Both games are still played by many. In terms of new content, I hate to say it but I'm actually happy with how L4D2 is. Workshop is pretty cool for experiencing community content made by passionate modders where we don't have silly hats forced on everyone sold in lootboxes. I'd much rather prefer another L4D2 situation of new separate game package rather than TF2-style bloating of the game with tat and bugs.
I still play it. I mean, L4D2 ain't really dead. It has over 10k players playing currently. I think the major problem Valve did for some fucking reason was making lobby search only small region instead of, ya know, Entire Europe! or at least half of it. Quite often you see 10k players playing and yet you only see few lobbies. Only way to search more lobbies is to change your steam download region to another country. I set mine to England or French and I now get 5x more lobbies.
I'd much rather prefer another L4D2 situation of new separate game package rather than TF2-style bloating of the game with tat and bugs.
Holy shit, this. What makes L4D2 special is that you just start the game and play. If Valve does make L4D3 my biggest worry is that they'll add Character Classes, Cosmetic Items or Unique Vocalizes etc.
You can download a server browser addon, which makes life easier.

L4D1 vocalizing is awesome when used right, but it does poorly when the only purpose is to go "vocalize PlayerDeath".
If anyone is looking to play, I've been needing to try this campaign out http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1116963244&searchtext=The+Parish%3A+Waterfront Add me I suppose

Urban Flight, Fatal Freight, Dam It, Warcelona and IhateMountains are alright, too.

Mang you gave me a craving for L4D now. Let's see if this Surface Book can run it. Anyone up for a game if it does?
Lotsa good stuff
Added to the OP, thanks!
i remember skipping school so that i could play l4d1's beta the day it came out there is NOTHING like the feeling of playing through no mercy for the first time ever. i miss these games
Did that go anywhere in Portal 2?
No. It's pretty embarassing honestly. There's a store button still on the front page that just leads you to an error message about how the store is closed as you see your co-op character loadouts in the background. Though honestly cosmetics would at least make more sense in L4D3 than a game like Portal 2. I don't know who thought they were a good idea.
Perfect timing, I'm also working on getting my old "good campaigns database" dusted off. Here's the link so you can see what it'll be like (very WIP): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11zTvCE14Qk5zEgdEzxxVOx5d2rkQ8mpM1Bcekm5nM3w/edit?usp=sharing It's only got 5 campaigns so far but I'm hoping to get the number up to over 150 quality campaigns like in the old document! I'd be glad if it was added to the OP when it's got a good enough number of entries. Please give feedback.
