far cry 2 is 50km square, STALKER is smaller than that, and gtaiv is only the same size as san andreas arma2's main map is 225km square... arma 3's will be 900km square and with a 20km view distance (you can see further in arma3 than you can even travel in a straight line in the games you mentioned). there are no loading times on either of these maps you have to take into account all the processing power it takes to deal with the sim stuff in ArmA too - stuff that the comparably tiny games you mentioned don't do. stuff like projectile physics, realistic weather cycles, environment destruction, more complex AI, etc there's a reason that even really shit-looking simulators can make good PCs cry; you can see this especially with racing and flight simulators that take a big dump on processors because of the ridiculous number of physics calculations that are being made there's mods for that in ArmA2 that will probably, considering how mods have worked across the first two games, be quickly ported to the new engine (assuming BIS don't do it themselves)
I know ArmA runs like shit, but most of the people in this thread sounded like it was because the lighting was gonna be too amazing. Which it isn't. It's good, but nothing unheard of.
what i'm more trying to dispel now is this myth that it "runs like shit" and that, somehow, this is the supreme fault of the developers because they can't wave the magic wand of "optimisation" that is apparently an incredibly easy task yeh it runs slow, but it runs slow because of what the game is doing
Seriously, I would be expecting EA to create games like this, not Bohemia. There is something seriously wrong with FPS at the moment. Especially Modern Military Shooters.
what are you talking about.......
what are you talking about.......
All shooters play the same, there are hardly any arena shooters, tactic shooters are almost dead. And almost all games released are modern military shooters.
Are you trying to say that Arma 3 will play like other shooters? Not a fucking chance.
All shooters play the same, there are hardly any arena shooters, tactic shooters are almost dead. It's a military simulator; ever since Operation Flash Point that was sole goal of these games. It doesn't play like BF3, CoD, or other generic shooters.
Are you trying to say that Arma 3 will play like other shooters? Not a fucking chance.
I never tried to say that, i know what ArmA is about.
Also helps to run the game off an SSD
Enemy MAN far TO our FRONT :v:
hi THERE
I never tried to say that, i know what ArmA is about.
then what's your issue
then what's your issue
That big publishers, like EA and Activision, don't seem to have any good shooters anymore.
i always get a little shy from Bohemia games. they'll have certain parts that look absolutely amazing and immersive, which will usually get followed by something incredibly stupid that reminds me i'm playing a game. ArmA2 worst crime was its delayed animation. I can only hope that shit was put to rest.
The whole underwater combat does seem to be a bit gimmicky though.
The whole underwater combat does seem to be a bit gimmicky though.
How? I really dont see why people are complaining about underwanter combat
How? I really dont see why people are complaining about underwanter combat
Because it's an extremely rare and extremely uncommon tactical situation. IE: it never happens. Usually the only reason you have a soldier in the water like that is for a more or less passive objective. So they'd dismount from a boat and sneak onto a beach, disarm a mine or explosive or plant something on a ship etc. Having gun fights underwater is actually something I've never heard of and the logistics of actually firing a weapon accurately like that and having it kill someone is kind of well, I have no idea how that'd work.
Well it is the future, who knows how battles might change in the future.
i'm having trouble grasping what that change may be, if its only effect is underwater gunfights [editline]25th May 2012[/editline]
That big publishers, like EA and Activision, don't seem to have any good shooters anymore.
there are probably fifty better ways you could've worded that
i'm having trouble grasping what that change may be, if its only effect is underwater gunfights [editline]25th May 2012[/editline] there are probably fifty ways you could've worded that better
More effective underwater weapons and gear lead to more frequent underwater insertions, which leads to the need to have more forces guarding underwater paths. Or maybe radars and stuff that work underwater, which leads to the need to have forces guarding that stuff?
Because it's an extremely rare and extremely uncommon tactical situation. IE: it never happens.
How is that a relevant reason? You might as well complain about the entire ARMAverse in which Iran actually goes toe to toe with the entirety of NATO. In fact, Iran pretty much invades Greece. IE: It will never happen. If anything you should be happy that they're also adding more rare and less known 'tactical situations' into their game, rather than only focusing on the most common combat situations which would be fairly dull.

Yea. That was dumb.
-oh god oh god im retarded-
It's on Cryengine 3, and Crysis 2 seemed to run REALLY good on my old PC, so I wouldn't get that worried.
What? No it's not, why the hell would ever think that?
It's on Cryengine 3, and Crysis 2 seemed to run REALLY good on my old PC, so I wouldn't get that worried.
Why the hell would BIS use cryengine?
I really hope the diving part won't be gimmicky. Make it realistic. Like you actually need a tutorial to dive so that you don't kill yourself in the first 15 minutes.
Like you actually need a tutorial to dive so that you don't kill yourself in the first 15 minutes.
considering the helicopter, aircraft, wheeled, and tracked mechanics and how easy they are to grasp, i doubt the diving will be that difficult or in-depth
I hope they add running vault.Having to stop just to vault a small wall was annoying
The night stuff looks amazing. I always felt the lighting was too wonky at night in ARMA 2, with all the circles and particles really messing up and standing out way too much.
I like how the caption title is "Jay's Sore Throat" :v:
holy boners i really wish i wasnt on a laptop from 2004
considering the helicopter, aircraft, wheeled, and tracked mechanics and how easy they are to grasp, i doubt the diving will be that difficult or in-depth
Well, so far there aren't really any realistic diving games. Just gonna hope.
