• Could Rust be viable as a mobile game?

I've been playing around with my new Nexus 4 for the past few weeks. Loaded up shite-loads of games, emulators and the like. Several of them are based off Unity, no less. Very good ones; Dead Trigger and Shadowgun: Deadzone are two that I have been playing constantly. (Both are developed by Madfinger Games) Rust is a game where simplicity seems to be key. At least, in the stage it's currently at.. It's a game I like to pop into for an hour or so, then come back to later, much like my mobile games. Similar also to these mobile shooters are the RPG aspects; crafting, looting, upgrading and such. It's probably too revolutionary a suggestion to pitch this far. But have you devs every considered a mobile game? Is it even possible at this point? I know Garry has a famous post about his failed foray into mobile gaming (edit: Lol. Didn't realize Helk in fact authored Snabbo), but that was a super-casual game. A mobile platform version of Rust would cater to a whole different audience than a casual puzzle game.
well on tablets maybe. not sure about phones.
I don't think we'll be targeting anything but webplayer. That could change when the game is further on but it'd require a good amount of effort to run on tablets because of the resources (memory/cpu/gpu) rust requires and then the frequency of updates. Beyond that, I personally don't really care for on-screen joysticks/buttons.. but who knows at this point
well on tablets maybe. not sure about phones.
If action games are designed properly, they work fine on phones, not just tablets. Android screens are almost universally larger than iPhone screens, though.. so it's easier to play on some phones than others. But you don't quite need a tablet size.

It's less about controls and more about performance; we're already maxing out Unity in quite a few places, and we're going to be relying on DirectX 11 support to make it less of a strain iirc
I see. Thank you for the input! The Unity mobile games DO run on very small maps..
There's no chance in it's current form on current hardware it would ever run on a mobile device even if we wanted to (I personally have zero interest in it) The most you could hope for would be some kind of meta game that tied into rust but there are no plans for anything of the sort

If I had to guess, and don't read into this at all because it's just a random idea that has absolutely no substance, but maybe if we had some kind of hacking ingame, you'd have a system for unlocking doors and turning lights on and off and stuff, or if we had some kind of automated machinery to produce items (like robot work benches) we could make an app to queue up things to make, that sort of thing. I have no idea where we're going to take that sort of thing though, we're kind of sticking to a post-apocy theme so that might be a little too technologically advanced
What about taking this to the PS Vita? Considering it supports unity and has good specs, it would make sense. It would be one of two good games on the vita. [editline]25th March 2013[/editline] Vita is going to support unity.
