After playing Rust for a few hours i have become very impressed with it and i can see it going extremely far. But with that i do feel it to be lacking so just to throw my two cents in i'm going to post my ideas/opinions so i can see what you guys think. 1.) Firstly, i would like to have the laser sight have a toggle option, The flashlight has this and i find it extremely useful for when its days or when i don't want to be spotted by a nearby enemy. Now the problem i have it when its say night time and a enemy comes by i can't turn off my laser sight. The red dot is very visible and makes you stick out pretty bad. So all i really would like to see is a toggle button for the laser sight so i can stalk/hide with a weapon equipped with a laser. 2.) Now the next thing i would really like to see is the thickening of the woods and the addition of more tree models. Truthfully adding these little visual touch ups could make a HUGE difference to the feel of the game. It would also help make the game world feel a little more different because at the moment the land all looks like the same with its "spray" tree effect. 3.) Now this is something i feel NEEDS to be added to the game and i'm sure it will be, but just to shout it out i'd like to see the addition of the sniper rifle. Now i feel like some people will disagree thinking that it will make too much PVP but i feel like it could be made fair very easily. The sniper would be a more powerful shot that can kill a zombie in one hit and a player in two (one if you get a headshot). To make it more fair you would make the sniper very loud so everyone in the near will hear the direction your at. Now with that i also feel like the sniper should be a bolt action rifle and it should have around 5 bullets per magazine. This will make the sniper have to be more careful and make every shot count otherwise he could be getting killed himself. Also the sniper would be found without a sight so the player could choose between using a holographic to make the sniper more of a mid range weapon, or adding a farther traditional zoom scope. The player would also be able to add a silencer. But the silencer would be called a Heavy silencer. It would cost double the amount of parts that a normal silencer takes to make it (this is assuming they finally get the silencers working). Now another idea just in case you find the sniper to be too overpowered is too make it shoot tracer rounds. This way a sniper can't just camp on top of a mountain. This will make snipers always be on the move too. What i think the sniper should resemble... 4.) Landmarks/Points of interest... when you first spawn in rust you look around yourself and you see one small "town" like mass of buildings. If you were to describe the town you would use words like "hanger" , "two story building with lots of windows" or something similar. Now once you go to another town you find yourself saying the exact same things. This gets really apparent when you are playing with a friend and you want to meet up and when you try to describe the town your in you don't know how too because frankly every building looks the same! And with the forest all looking exactly the same it makes it even worse to try and keep a mental image of locations. Now i think making the forest's more expansive and thick would help a lot i also think that making special buildings for certain areas will really help improve on the towns. for example you could add simple things like a lighthouse near a town. This would instantly help people find there way around! Another idea would be the addition of farm fields to the island. right now the island seems to feel like a dessert like place. Now that's all fun and dandy but it really takes away from the overall environment. If you added some ares that seems more rural and green it would help players navigate. I also would love too see an improvement in the water because right now it looks pretty rough. It would be nice if you could add a more real water that would allow boats to drive around the ocean. Now with that you might say " oh well the maps too small for vehicles ". No, frankly the map is perfectly big enough for vehicles. Look at Grand theft auto 4 for example. It had small islands that were around the whole world and frankly vehicles worked just fine. But back to topic (sorry!). Back with the landmarks i think that if you could improve the water then you could add things such as military boat wrecks just out the coast with better special military loot ( you would have to make it so players could camp the boat too easily ). Adding shipwrecks and things like that adds points of interest to the whole map and just helps the total feel of the game (currently the game feels adrift). Now also i would like to see the addition of an airport to the island. It doesn't have to have working vehicles (even though a small helicopter would be CRAZY) (hint) it just has to have the feel and the uniqueness of a landing strip. This is what im talking about when i say landmarks because if im at the airport and my friend want's to meet up with me i can just say "oh im just up past the lighthouse in a small hanger in the airport area" That would improve gameplay ten fold if added. Lastly i think making settlements more unique could be as easy as making small army bases up that are fenced around with barbwire and have bunkers and military themed buildings would help alot too. These settlements will have have different loot depending on what type. So of course military bases have more weapon parts and barricades and such while civilian like towns have more health packs, food, water and more civilian like weapons like small handguns and hunting shotguns/rifles. And lastly i would like to see a large settlement that has a hospital like building that carry's health materials, this in relation with making health packs much more rare and hard to find will really make hotspots of battles for players. Because at the moment i can just sit in one small settlement forever and get the exact same items. This will really make players have to scavange and explore the map. Thus causing PVP in turn. 5.) Items that NEED to be added... at the moment in RUST if you play for 1-2 hours you can pretty much max out and get everything. This ruins replay value because when you die at the moment you only lose some of your stuff. I suggest adding high value rare items such as Night vision goggles, the goggles will be very rare and will introduce batteries into the game. The batteries will be used for various items (hand flashlights, tazer?, Gps, etc) the goggles will be found and will not be craftable ( this will help keep them rare and at high demand) and as a bonus it will make playing in the night MUCH more tolerable. Considering using a flashlight makes you a dead giveaway too bandits. Another thing i think would be great would be a compass, players cold use it to navigate more easily. While some people want a Map im not too sure about the map because i think the world isn't quite big enough yet. while a compass helps you feel like your in a large world and it keeps the realism alive. 6.) Base creation... wood barricades are just a small taste to the creation you could allow. Players already make small homes with the very little resources they have and i think that if you adde things like sandbag barricades, barbwire, scout towers, tents, camo canopies, players could really get immersed into the game. They could build bases out in a field or fortify a small settlement into a base of mass destruction. This would bring in players who like to do things such as clan games and other things like that and in the long run would really benefit the total popularity of the game. Those are just some of my ideas, Feel free to debate and comment on certain ideas etc, If you want to contact me just message me through the forums or at my email: drewgreen_01@hotmail.com
Thanks for the suggestions. Press V and F to toggle the flashlight and laser sight on or off. The foliage and woods is something we are constantly trying to improve, it is a tall order to add so much to a 256 sq km map. We have basically maxed out unity in that regard, but we have some ideas for the future. Base creation is something that will be worked on, so is crafting of items, it is early alpha so many things are not complete yet or horribly unbalanced.
Do you plan on staying on the unity browser or going to a .exe? And it's good i can toggle my laser! Thank you! I'll be on as much as possible searching for bugs! Keep up the great work!
Agreed. I feel like to add a difficulty to the sniper rifle, you would have to find the weapon parts to craft the sniper rifle, as well as the scope for it. So there's the risk that when you craft the sniper rifle that you might not have any attachment slots and therefore no scope.
Well there are other issues regarding sniper rifles, it would be hard to manage the networking relating to it, right now you only get network updates for things that are near you, so this means when you zoom in with a sniper rifle there wouldn't actually be any targets to shoot if it's greater than 300 or whatever. So we could fix this by increasing the network radius for a player using the sniper rifle to whatever the max range is going to be. Now you get another problem, for all the players who are the potential targets of that sniper they have no network data about this sniper or where he is so they'll just die out of nowhere and not be able to return any kind of fire. This might be somewhat realistic but also in a game where you're going to lose lots of items and stuff (in the future) it might end up being annoying. Furthermore the whole thing about slots and all that isn't going to matter, with enough people playing there are going to be people mass producing weapons so from a developers point of view you have design around the fact that lots of people will have 5 slot fully decked out rifles. With all that being said though it is one of the most heavily suggested items/features so we will definitely plan around it. Without making any promises or anything like that I can say that we will add a semi auto or bolt action rifle with atleast an ACOG scope. If we do decide to do something with snipers (and it really is requested 10x daily) I would probably add all kinds of ballistics to it so making long range shots was really, really, hard. (think COD4 chernobyl sniping level, but harder) P.s. there are no plans for a standalone version as of right now Thanks for all the suggestions!
Awesome, But yes i understand that radius prolem can be quite a problem and your idea with using more of a mid range rifle to meet the middle between request and what is possible at the moment is very resourceful. Now on with the question of the radius of what players can see, Is it limited because the unity server can't load it all? And would there be anyway of putting the players computer in charge of the distance of players they can see? (something like how Minecraft only loads as much of the map and the range as your computer can handle). I feel like another good median for a farther range weapon would be a high powered compound bow, It would be good for killing an enemy that is medium range away, yet it would be more difficult and really take a high amount of skill to actually get the kill! This would be good for the players who enjoy hiding away in towers and on top of hills waiting to kill the unsuspecting player!
The long range weapons are good, but I don't see an effectiveness as of now in the game. There's not currently enough people on at one time for it to be more valuable then, say, sneaking up on somebody with a m9. Plus once you add the sniper rifle you run into the factor that everybody will hide with the sniper rifle, camp the spawns and nobody will ever be able to get anything done because there would be a lock-down so-to-speak on anybody who didn't have a sniper rifle (similar to DayZ). Once the sniper rifle is added, the level of difficulty decreases in a way because it makes it harder and harder for people to be affected by zombies (not that effective as is).
With the rate zombies spawn it wouldn't do much of an advantage, but yes you would have to make the sniper much more rare than even the F1 grenade. I feel like if they move the better loot away from the spawns this will keep experienced players busy near other experienced and will help the new players get associated with the feel of the game. Now i think that if they added a bolt action like Helk said and we saw how players used it and the cons and pros we could really see if the sniper rifle would hurt or make the game. For example if they made sniper ammo non craftable then the amount of snipers on the server would drop drastically. They could then in turn keep a healthy amount of snipers in the game that stay on in between area. And with the zombies you truly have to even it out just right, because no matter what a veteran player will have alot less of a problem fighting against zombies even if he just used his m9. Players will want to focus more on PVP. Now if we wanted to really make things interesting you could have the zombies spawn at night time and attack throughout the night, the hordes would be alot larger and come day time they would disentegrate leaving players to scavange as fast as possible. That would make players have to run into town along with other frantic players. This in turn would turn into truly epic battles! And that would really make the aspect of bunkering down better because players would have a true reason to sit in their base at the night time.
Please re-think the health. Medkits should become Bandages and Blood Bags should be given by other players to restore blood. This adds such a big factor to the game which is why it works so well for DayZ. Even if it's something similar to that and not totally like it, it will still help a lot. Currently the game is too much like a generic FPS.

On the topic though. drugs. like pain killers and steroids (to be used like temporary power ups). for example a adrenaline shot to make you heal quicker and move faster yet messes with your vision a bit (tunnel vision). or Say... Morphine, Or something like asperin. i think itd be a nice touch aslong as these where Rare items. would also be neat if there where special ammo's nothing like incindiaries. stuff like armor piercing or hollow points.
