I have often placed pillars in a very bad place in my builds and there is no way to fix it, and I hear complaints about people making the same mistake all the time.
I think that by default, pillars should only be able to be placed in the four corners of a foundation. In order to place in any of the 5 center positions, it would be as simple as right-clicking to enable placement.
Most servers have mods that allow you to remove such pillars with the spawn pickaxe they provide.
Try playing on those for the time being.
I run my own Vanilla server and I love the vanilla playstyle, I just figured this feature could help everyone out, especially the newer players.
I suppose so, or maybe even make it ask for a quick double click verification before you place a pillar down?
Either way, I've played vanilla and I've felt the frustration. That's why I switched to modded servers.
I don't think that there's any decent way to prevent bad placement, but it is quite annoying. Once, I was building my house and the last pillar I placed on my foundation was accidentally placed in the middle of the edge, making my house totally unusable.
I don't think there can be a solution, especially since bad pillar placement is really our own fault.

This is the key. The game is a survival sim , stop trying to build in the pitch black of night and start taking your time to do things properly and you wont waste as much time rebuilding later.
Just learn from you're mistakes....

yes but in real life you wouldnt accidentally place is in the middle of a floor
