• Sorry haven't played for 3 months, nothing is new?

Hi guys, for alot of readers I understand this may be "just another one of those posts", but try googling "rust patch" and all you will find are people wanting to get rust out of their clothes or wanna know how to repair rust on their cars. All I am wondering though is: did the developers abandon this game? It was so great, had so much potential, but no new updates from since March 15th. tells me this game is dead, or? I understand people are still playing, but I mean is it dead from the developers point of view? Or have I missed out on something and I have to pay for a new game, or what's up? I see the dev's post alot of pictures and alot of talk on their page, but still there's no info about a patch or anything anywhere :P Could someone please tell me what's what? Does anyone know when the game will start patching again? Feel free to call me whatever word you feel the need to because I don't know this or that, as long as there's some information in there as well. Thank you, and here's to hoping this game will come to life again :)
You need to load the experimental branch to see the new changes. They are no longer patching the old code. So much has changed in 3 months, I hardly know where to begin (maybe not all added to the game yet, but alot of art assets pending)... I suggest you check out the trello sites and playrust.com
or just bite the bullet and jump into the experimental branch under "properties>betas>experimental branch (KEEP AWAY!)" but yeah, long story short, they are rebuilding the game from scratch and not updating the original:)
I see :P Yeah I noticed that "keep away"-thing and thought: maybe I should keep away :P But if it's safe, I guess I'll check it out, cause I really wanna see this great game finish :P
its safe, but lets just say prone to crashing. its more alpha than the current build, but its better made:)
I've said it before and I'll say it again... Facepunch REALLY need to get the message out there amongst players about the current 'legacy' version of Rust - and specifically the news that it's no longer being updated. Questions like those raised by the OP crop up time after time on here and in the in-game chat. It's a simple piece of information - why the fudge isn't it mentioned in the pre-amble on Steam or on the game title page? Y'know, where people might see it. Yeah, yeah, "they don't want people playing the game until it's finished"... but people ARE already playing the game in their thousands/millions. And many of them believe they're playing the finished product. It just seems like bad business not to clarify this. People will get bored of waiting for updates that will never happen, and they'll move on to play something else, and likely won't return. I mean, it's not like there isn't a huge amount of competition in the MMO survival genre already. If everyone deserts the game, we'll be left with a player community that comprises only the grumpy sods on this forum who continually bleat "It's alpha, get over it!". And that would suck ;)
www.playrust.com go to the site and check out all the stuff they are doing if you really want to know what is new.
I jumped into the experimental yesterday but nothing was working. I loaded into an open field with no resources in site other than a few trees here and there. Nothing in my inventory could be used and when I walked each footstep sounded like a wall or piller being destroyed and left rainbow colored footsteps on the ground. LOL
Yes, this is what video games look like before the alpha state.

LOL
Yeah, that's because: - Garry said he wants to experiment with walking animation itself generating footprints, which would generate the sound - They have LOOOADS of new stuff, that's still in progress, so it's not in experimental yet - They are working on randomly generated map, so it logically looks plain and deserted yet (Petur has been working on forests a lot lately, god they look amazing) - New building system was said to be probably added next week to experimental
Neat thing about this change is the foot tracking stuff probably laid a decent amount of ground work for the tracking AI Andre is working on.

Im the one of those waiters :) and realy wanna know when they are uptade
realy wanna know when they are uptade
The experimental branch is being updated constantly. The big switchover where it replaces the 'old' version as the default install has no set deadline. garry himself has stated that he'll do that when more people are playing the experimental version than the old one. What he means by that is, when experimental is good enough that it attracts players away from the old version, when it's better and more feature-complete, it should naturally become more popular. A note in the old Rust client on the title screen mentioning the experimental branch, when it's playable as a game, would help and garry hasn't ruled out making any effort to nudge migration in the future. He's not pushing anyone to move to experimental now because it's still too early. Building doesn't exist yet and is being worked on by garry right now, for example. The footstep sound system is being reworked to match the character's actual footsteps, and right now the sound it makes is not footsteps. This would be so silly people would complain if it was in the main branch, but in experimental, it's Friday. SKOL, don't confuse the current messaging with what will happen when garry wants people to start moving to experimental. Once experimental replaces the old version, I'm sure there'll be a Steam announcement to capture the attention of people who aren't even coming to the site/forums and stopped playing the game as well. Gaming blogs will post about it, word will get out. Next time you run into someone who doesn't know about the experimental build, ask them if they even know what the official Rust website is. If the answer isn't playrust.com, it's not that they're not being informed, they don't care enough.
^ Good points above. There's been a few times - many in fact - when I've pointed people to playrust for more information; and specifically to clarify why the version of Rust they're playing is not where the final product will materialize. It still befuddles a lot of people to hear this news. But you're right. Facepunch can get the word out when they're ready, by which time there'll be a lot of good surprises in store when people start playing the new improved version. Personally, I've since quit playing the legacy branch - for no reason other than I've seen/done as much as I want to for the time being; it's still a good game. I'm now just keeping an eye on Experimental and looking forward to watching it develop.

Why not put all hands to the wheel and get the new build of Rust to the standard of the old one or even close to the old one would be now if they weren't forced to rebuild the game? It is frustrating to see devs working on fluffy features like closed eyes during sleeping when its not even playable.

As much as you would like it to be playable, the devs' priorities are to make it right, not to give you satisfaction as soon as possible. Also, making the animators and 3D artists write code sounds like a fantastic idea, that won't cause any problems at all. If there was no functioning build of Rust that was an actual "game" and experimental was all we had, you may have a point, but instead you come off as an impatient baby demanding short-term gratification. Don't rush the devs, nothing good will happen. Also, by keeping it from being a drop-in replacement for the legacy build and as a sandbox that's made for testing, not fun, it keeps out the yahoos who just want to PVP all day and who will never file a bug report in their lives. By being primarily for testing, only people who actually care to give feedback and file reports are going to have any interest in hanging around beyond checking in on the new features once in a while, because it'll be boring otherwise. This is beneficial to the devs, as much as you may dislike it.

How could they its not their field. They could however do the animations for what is missing that is currently in the build. By calling me names (Impatient baby) for (a) pointing out that there is no functionality in the current experimental build and (b) wishing they would get the new build playable by avoid doing stuff that is currently unnecessary to getting the game back on track. And if you don't consider a complete rebuild after months on steam going off track we have very different notions of the phrase. While I completely accept your point about keeping a test server with test minded players, there would be nothing stopping the devs from opening another beta just for that purpose and getting a build that has a future. It has been quite some time since the decision was made to start again and while there is a functional build of rust it has massive problems that would have been addressed to some degree had the rebuild not been done. So we now find ourselves in the limbo of a game that is by the devs admission is broken and no replacement coming in the near future.
So basically you're telling the devs how to do their job. Good luck with that.
As some with 450+ hours on the game I am entitled to my opinion.
log in and find out...
Log in and find out? I have played the experimental version 2 days ago, I couldn't craft a fire or equip my pistol.
Log in and find out? I have played the experimental version 2 days ago, I couldn't craft a fire or equip my pistol.
That quality post was a four-word response to the thread title.
I too was in the dark about "experimental," and I guess I didn't fully understand that "alpha" was going to be such a large portion of the games development (I thought it would atleast be Beta by now) I just really want to play the finished game!
