• How does shooting work on this game?

Hey guys, I've been playing Rust for some time and I still don't get how do guns / projectiles work on this game. What do I have to keep in mind on this game when shooting? Do I have to shoot where my enemy is running to or do I have to shoot his body? I'm asking this because sometimes when I'm shooting someone and, I hit him and he spreads blood from his body, but there's no hitmarker , so I actually didn't hit him and sometimes when I shoot and I don't aim at his body , I get a hitmarker and damage my enemy. I'll put here 2 examples of FPS where shooting doesn't work the same way : Halo CE (Yeah, I know, a really old game lol) : On this game, you have to shoot where your enemy is running to , not to his body , this happen due to latency. CS:GO : You have to shoot to the body of your enemy, not to the place where he's running to. Even if you're lagged as hell , if you hit your enemy's body , he will get dmg. So, how does RUST work? HALO way or CS:GO way? Also, another question : does bullet travel time exist on this game or it's just a visual effect? Thanks and sorry for my english.
Shooting is client-sided, so you just have to aim where your target appears on your screen. There's no bullet travel time (though the tracers make it seem that way). Also, I haven't properly tested it, but it seems every weapon has perfect accuracy, excluding shotguns.
It is closer to CS. You have to shoot where the body is. The only weapon that this is slightly different is the bow as the arrows takes a lil time to get there but the lead is not much unless you are shooting from a larger distance and suspect he will zig or zag a certain way. Also when shooting your weapons hold down the right mouse button and use the iron sights. I find it much more accurate then using the laser sight and shooting from the hip, but to each their own. Head shots can also save you A LOT OF TIME, as they do much more damage as they should. Head shots also make that satisfying sound we all love :)

I've never noticed that happening, unless it was someone else shooting my target. I don't think the server has anything to do with hit markers. You'll get them even when the server is being DDOSed. You could test it yourself by disabling your internet and hitting stuff.
I've noticed this as well, but i don't know if it's packet-loss or bad netcode, because even CSGO does the same thing, although there is no hit markers. You hit someone and see blood spray but it didn't register on the server. It's not about an aiming problem , it's about I don't know why sometimes I get hitmarkers when I shouldn't and why I don't hitmarkers when I should :P

I saw 3 blood splats on the guy and figured WTF why is he not dead. When I lost the fight he said only 1 registered. Essentially sometimes lag or other things come into effect, it is just the client side information not matching up with the server side. Usually if you see the hit marker tho, its a garentee hit. None the less stick to the CS style or shooting for the body information raco stated as that is how it works and I have had good success with it.

No. You will get hit markers even with complete packet loss.
No. You will get hit markers even with complete packet loss.
So, we return to the part where sometimes we get hitmarkers when we shouldn't and we don't get hitmarkers when we should. What's the explanation on this?
I think the only way you're going to get an answer is if you can reproduce it reliably, or at least get a recording of it. I haven't noticed what you're describing, but then again, I usually don't notice blood splats. One explanation is that it could be the slow-moving tracers that cause blood splats and not the actual shot. Another explanation is that someone (or something) else was hitting your target.
