So I started playing Rust yesterday. I spent ~5 hours playing, building a small house to store some things in. Then I logged off to go to sleep. Woke up today got on, dead, some one had broken into my house already, taken all my stuff and killed me because it was a sleeper server. So today I log onto a non-sleeper server, and I spend ~8 hours building my house and collecting supplies. I run a cpl mins from my house to grab some wood/stone, and as I run back to my house I notice a giant hole in the side of it , a guy pops out and shoots me in his full radioactive gear with an m4. Its WAY to easy to break into houses right now, especially with servers that have the sleeper mod. Literally all the work I have done today, is now gone. I have nothing at all to show for it. 8 hours completely down the drain. What is going to be done about this? I understand the need for bases to be "Raidable", but you shouldn't be able to find the material to do it with in 2 hours of game play. (I had found enough C4 to blow into a house pretty easily). Also, it means you have to make retarded house designs, as in Room -> Door -> Room -> door over and over to ATTEMPT to make your base safe for at least a few hours while you try to sleep. As a new player there is no way at all for me to play this game and save any of my progress. When fully geared players with m4s are running around using c4 on shit one room wooden houses just because they have a shit load of it to waste, its ridiculous. Are we going to see C4 nerfs? They need to be FAR rarer than they are now, and crafting them should be either impossible or require an immense amount of material, making it only viable for large scale base raids.
dont troll moron
Try making a house in the mountains or away from other people. EDIT: By away from other people I mean away from radiation zones and resourse zones
Making it harder to craft C4 and other weapons will just widen the gap between new players and established groups. Those groups will have no problem making enough C4, no matter what the requirements, so it's the newbies who will suffer most. And you didn't lose everything... you hopefully researched some things to craft, and learned that maybe you built in a dangerous area. If you build close to something that people go to a lot (rad zone, resource valley)... they're going to notice you much sooner.

Weapons arent the problem, C4 is. And sure I researched a few things, that does me no good since ill never be able to KEEP anything in this game in its current form.
Come play on our new fresh server, It just opened up, so you should have no problem getting started, as everyone else is at the same level! Check this thread for more info!

Also its an EU server, no thanks not playing on 500 ping.

The ping status on the server screen browser is bugged and will often show a false reading. My community also runs its own EU server and as an International team we have several U.S and Canadian members playing on there and not one of them has ever experienced a ping higher than 120ms and even then only at peak EU times when the server can get quite busy.
walls need to be indestructible, wasting 5-10 hours just to build your wooden house, only to be completely destroyed, just discourages me from even wanting to play. i dont mind doors being destructable, there needs to be some way to raid, but making walls destructable is wayy too advantageous for the people that are stock piling charges & f1's when the little guy who just set up his house falls victim to this douchebag and gets all of his beginner resources stolen by Mr. NoLife
Definitely agree it's way to simple to destroy rather than create. To make a reasonably defensible house it is going to require hours upon hours upon hours of wood and metal gathering, just to make layers. Yet still it takes a few minutes for someone with C4 to destroy it all. And unless you're in a group doing it solo is a god damn nightmare cause you waste so much time...
May i suggest this server? http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1323414 I don't like to advertise on other peoples thread however it might be more suitable for you at present. It's called The Purge - PvE for most of the day, then PvP turns on for 3 hours (no rules during this time) It's great for new players to get a start on the game and get a sizeable base and arms before killing some people. It is a EU server, however we've have an influx of Canadian and US players with no complaints so far. Regarding going through walls, yeah i'd like to be harder considering most new players only have a very small home. However there has to be an easier way to raid some of the monstrous bases some groups build.
too bad it's EU... sounds awesome

The game is supposed to be hard. It's about survival, not instantwinning the game after 1 day of playtime. The thing is, you either have to get a group going really early, or you need some friends that you start out with so you can protect yourself. Games like this will always be about having groups of people around you, and building strong infrastructure.

A metal door helps a lot. Then concentrate to get all metal structure bluprints (or research them with a research kit). And try to get into a group that can help you. I hope that helps...
As much as it seems it right now... it isnt that big of an issue when you get raided and lose everything. In fact... its not that hard currently to restart and after a few hours, be ready to go again and raid someone yourself, so long as you have the research. At the start of any server, your primary goal should be just to get the research done and get the lay of the land. Don't worry about collecting and storing resources. I'm also learning to not stockpile anything. Get what you need and sacrifice the rest to the despawn gods. Better than letting someone else grab it from you when they raid you :)
Firstly I'm just going to say the obvious, this game is in Alpha. There will be many server wipes from now until release, you will lose everything many, many times. Secondly, those hours you spent aren't wasted. From those encounters you can gain useful experience, it's up to you to actually use that experience. I soon learnt where a good house location was and how avoiding players was the best thing to do. There are many "assholes" in this game, but in my eyes they actually add to the experience. Rust is set in a brutal world where most people are happy to shoot on sight. I have a note pad beside my computer the names of players I want revenge on. I agree there will be a lot of balancing needed to be done though.
the game is a bit pointless to play the map is too small, as everyone is on top of each other. But if you can figure out where you are and able to get the right stuff you can get setup very quick. Alas where I agree is the amount of hours put in to get a fairly good setup, and I've said this in game is that I find it funny that the wiki and people say build metal doors but you can just smash straight through the walls. I've had to restart over 3 times and I just couldn't be bothered anymore so I started running around and smashing into people's places and stealing their stuff then die then do that a few times over. The devs need to figure out a way to have people keep their place or items (you can loose them but it's fairly easy to build or get them back) As the game is right now there's little reason or point in actually buying the game or even playing it much once you've done the set up stage a couple of times. It just becomes a case of run around destroying people's stuff then karking it. The other problem is clans if they are on 24/7 then everyone else is screwed I was on a server last night and a clan of 5 guys was just going around killing everyone on sight and busting into everyones place. This was starting to piss some people off. then they would log off and on all the time. Some will love/like that happening other would just get fed up with it. As for make a house off in the wilderness it's all for naught as people will find it at some point I've had it happen to me. As I said though the map is a bit small. It actually makes me wonder how many people have bought it, play it for a couple days week maybe and then not bother with it there after.

The point in the advice of using metal doors is that it means someone will NEED C4 to get into your house. If you use the wooden doors anyone with a rock could break in, steal all your stuff, destroy your sleeping bags, kill you (if it's a sleeper server) and put their own doors on the house to effectively take ownership of it. At least if someone has to burn C4 to get into your house you have the satisfaction of knowing it cost them quite a few resources to get to your stuff. It's quite amusing when they blow through the wrong wall into a fake storage room too. =]
Starting over, and over, and over is really getting old. I've had to "start over" about ten times now. Oh sure a metal door helps, but everyone and their mother seems to have C4 these days. Just now, after restarting for probably the eleventh time, I get a little room built, metal door, starting to collect enough wood for a more complex layer system, when three guys fully armored with shotguns wander over with C4, blow up the door and I'm killed all loot gone. And its not like I even had any loot, cloth, some food, no armor, no guns, no research kits just basic supplies. I get its omghardcoresurvial but there comes a point where there actually is no point in playing because unless you have a crew yourself you are just going to get zerged by another group who have gear and you have none. I shouldn't be forced into having a group myself, just to survive.
Maverick thats the whole point of the game to group up with other people or join a clan it took me about a week to figure this out because I was in your boat but since getting into a clan I don't die as much or at all

As things are now, you're quite right. The game is just horribly unfriendly to anyone trying to play solo. That being said, I play solo and I've found there are plenty of ways to set yourself up so your house will at least survive the first day. First, never plant a house in the middle of resources (animals, ore, rad towns, etc.) If there's any reason for another person to be there regularly then you're going to get found and most likely raided. Second, if you run into people in the wild, never run to your house. This will only ensure that the person that was trying to kill you will eventually come back with C4 just because you chose to hide behind your metal doors instead of face them. Third, if you have any neighbors, get to know them. It can be better if you avoid having neighbors but if you end up with a small group for neighbors then their efforts to protect their territory from intruders can actually work to your advantage. Fourth, try to check back with your house if you can (look from a distance to see if there are others around but don't actually go up to it) but don't go back to it too frequently. Every time you go back to deliver resources, you run the risk of someone following you to your house. This one runs the risk of you losing a large quantity of resources to some random bandit or you not being there to deal with a raider but just like the "don't run home" advice, it protects your house and its resources from being discovered. Fifth, don't make enemies. Running around in full Kevlar with an M4 killing people like the clans do may be fun but when you're playing alone it only succeeds in getting you added to people's kill lists. Unless you can find a group to run with, your best defense lies in people having no reason to remember you (at least not in a negative light.) This doesn't mean you can't kill someone that tries to kill you when you have the means to fight back. It just means that you shouldn't go looking for trouble. Sixth, use the rocks. This is helpful both for hiding your house and for losing potential pursuers on your way back home. The rocks are quite possibly the best thing they've added to this game for the solo player since careful use of the rocks can help you either lose or kill small groups that might come after you. It can also help if you're playing on lower pop servers but fewer people means less interesting outings so it's up to you where to strike that balance. If you hate PvP altogether you could always just join a PvE server. Ultimately though, you have to accept the fact that with this game you're going to lose stuff. Sometimes just a little, sometimes everything you have. You have to learn to look at it more as the only resource that matters is blueprints. As long as you still have those, you're set. That being said, you're going to lose those to wipes on occasion as well so you just have to get over it and start over.
Being new to the game and complaining about being raided and losing stuff is really premature. Learn how to play the game first before you start ranting about how easy it is to raid. That guy that raided you probably has been playing for a long time. And you just 2 days or whatever, give the game some time, I thought the game was hopeless at first but then I learned where to build and where not to build, and where to go and not to go if I didn't want to be killed.
If you can't stand the thought of restarting after a wipe or recovering after a raid, this game is probably not for you. I personally enjoy starting over. If everyone quit the first or second time they got wiped out, nobody would be playing.

However, from many hours of playing thus far over the last week, I've found resource nodes don't tend to spawn but in certain areas, or if they do spawn it's very sparce between each node. So having to build way off in the middle of no where is fine, having to run miles to find wood is hard.
I like how londasgt has rated every post.

Either you have the convenience of having every material you'll need right on your doorstep OR you have the security of being more difficult to find. It's entirely your choice but if you're playing solo you generally don't have a choice but to pick the latter since the former basically guarantees you'll log in each day to find an empty house.
I like how londasgt has rated every post.
Didn't rate either of mine, nor yours...
I got raided, but then built a base somewhere deserted, and gathered so much stuff, I have tons of full Kevlar and tons of M4s and other guns and ammo and supplies, and I fortified up the house quite a bit. Don't complain and say new players cant do it.
This needs fixed, yet garry continues to ignore the issue
It doesnt take long before you can have a house with a metal door. Think before you act, before building a house make sure you have enough resourches to finish it, if you cant collect everything in a couple of hours( it is possible ), then try and look for a save spot in the mountains without drawing attention to yourself ( dont make a shelter just sleep between the rocks ) once you have everything start crafting it in the mountains and go to a place where you want to build and set everything up. Also dont use wooden doors, make metal instead it doesnt take long. If you dont have the resourches to build big then don;t build in places where people would walk past or you will be an easy target.
