Okay, so a buddy of mine told me about this game a couple days ago while I was at work. Got home, downloaded it, and have logged about 12 hours play now. Here's a few suggestions coming from someone who is new to Rust, but has enjoyed himself many a good sandbox game.
Crafted Map and Compass
Both maps, and compasses should be crafted items. Maps should start out blank, and as you venture, the basic landmarks and locations should start to appear. As far as resourses, and any other point of interest, the players themselves should have to add those locations to the map. When viewing the map, the player should be aware of their current location by nothing more than a small "you are here" dot, not even a triangle showing the current way their facing, just a dot. The player would then have to switch to there compass to point themselves in the right direction.
Now, with the maps being crafted items, and players having to add their own notes for points of interest. This means that if you kill someone, and loot their map, and they just so happened to have added the location of there base... you see where I'm going with this.
Gun Rarity
Guns should be something that are damn near impossible to get your hands on. I'm talking like a 3-5% chance of getting a blueprint to drop, and actual guns never dropping. Now I know what your thinking, that would make people who have guns way too overpowered... Bull$#!t, I've seen people kill players with guns, and all they had was a hatchet. Plus, I feel that blueprints shouldn't be something you learn, and then they disappear, they should be something that you have to have in your inventory when you go to craft said item.
Friends, Parties, Clans
Mainly for chat/voice. Not having everything you type being seen by everyone on the map, etc. Also, this would help with being able to set door permissions for your base, and loot options, when farming with a group of people. Maybe even having the option of player names of people in your friends list/party/clan always displaying above there head, or maybe just in a different color...
Game Map
I know it's an alpha, but I'd like to see at least double the map size for the amount of people on the server. It feels a bit cramped to me. Seems like you can't go five minutes without running into someone, and having to wonder if there going to shoot you in the back. Plus, I'm not too keen on having set maps. It would be sweet if it was more like minecraft, to where when the server is first created, the world auto seeds with controlled randomness.
Vehicles
I'm torn on this issue... I could see how having vehicles would be cool, but at the same time... I dunno, if I'm starting out as a little naked dude with nothing but a rock, it's kind of silly that I would end up being able to craft a vehicle. Maybe just have them be little crappy ones, that guzzle the hell out of gas, and you constantly are having to stop and refuel them. No armored tanks, lamborghinis, attack helicopters, etc.
Anyways, just a few of my ideas on the direction this game should take. Let me know what you think. Thanks
I suggest having a read over this piece by the Rust devs on the direction they want to take Rust. It'll help inform your feedback a lot better.

You like quoting that a lot. However it addresses player behavior and has nothing to do with what RyZilla suggested.....
One of our main aims with Rust is to not control how people behave directly. For example some people want us to implement something to discourage people killing each other. Some kind of rating. Or turn killers red to warm you they can’t be trusted.
I hate that. It’s not giving the players freedom. The players should decide how they play the game. You should be fearful of others. That is the whole point. This is a game where the player makes their own story.. and emotion plays into it a lot. If you see another guy in game.. – you’re going to be scared of him at first. But then you sniff around each other and decide to go on an adventure together. You begin to trust each other. That means so much more if you both had the ability to kill the other at any time and didn’t. And you weren’t just doing it for a green +1.
Translation, instead of designing artificial UIs for friends lists with little floating coloured pips over your clanmates' heads and such, find emergent-gameplay ways of identifying friends. Such as giving each other red shirts, as described in the same post -- although, this isn't implemented yet, so patience is needed.
In other places (which I did not reference or quote earlier), garry has expressed his desire to not implement artificial UI elements like friends lists and such in very definite terms. As described above, he feels that it should be up to you to sort friend from foe and not have a program abstract your social interactions away.
Also, new threads get created about it like 6 times a day because nobody searches things, sharing doors is being experimented on. Last I heard, Helk was experimenting with combination locks, where you need to keep the combination safe, so only tell it to your friends.
I like the gun rarity and ability to craft map ideas. Besides that, C4s are also floating around so much that it's easy to demolish anybody's house. The game is a bit imbalanced in that respect.
