Please do something. I know the game is in very alpha stage but I pay for it I deserve to play ! Don't make people pay if they cannot play...
I should notice that I can run ./rust.x86 from console without issue but I cannot connect to any server because steam is not detected. Even by pressing f1 and doing net.connect server_ip:port I got a "not steam detected, connection failed" error.
I aslo tried beta steam branch and rust live dev branch without success.

one more suggestion... you said that x86 works..
try renaming executables
so steam is actually running the x86 then
i have 64bit linux distro also and steam is launching still x86 variant for me.. i dunno where its decided what executable to run.. for example starbound runs as 64bit ... so go figure
but renaming the executables should do the trick as well until proper fix arrives

rename rust.x86 to rust.x86_32
and put this to steam launch options
LC_ALL=C %command%_32
maybe that will work?
i have no idea where steam takes the info to launch x86 or x86_64 .. i know that mostly they default to x86 and when you want to run 64bit one then you add %command%_64 to do that.
edit: maybe your distro is missing some 32bit libraries or your steam runtime is incomplete so it doesnt run x86 executables... just a wild guess.
steam reinstall might be a good test also.. just keep your SteamApps/common folder if you dont want to redownload all your games

Without steam I can launch rust.x86 but I obvioulsy see no servers.
Now if I run ./rust.x86_64 without stea I stay stuck on the PlayRust window with wird smiley and grey background. The error is:

Now if I launch rust from steam I got crash with the same error as my first post BUT I noticed that 'ps -A' command return that rust.x86 is executed and not 64 version...
I have the feeling that steam/rust are mixing 32 and 64 bits executables and/or system libraries...

For the record, I am able to run Rust just fine on a 64 bit linux installation. I am not able to run the 64 bit game though, which is probably why the devs chose to make it run 32 bit either way (stability reasons).

In case it helps you narrow it down a bit, I'm running Rust, via Steam with no custom configuration, with no problems on Ubuntu 13.10 x86_64 on a machine with i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz, 16GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GTX 760 with the 331.20 binary driver.
I have seen a few black holes in the sky but I think that is a generic glitch and not related to my setup.
In fact it seems to be working better for me than for my buddy who's running it via Steam on Win7, as he has trouble connecting to community servers, and I don't.
i run fine as well with Arch Linux x86_64, kernel 3.12-3-pf FX 8320 @ 4,4 ghz, 24GB DDR3, Nvidia GTX 660TI drivers 331.20.
but when i press play from steam it starts the rust.x86 for me even though im on 64bit system
when i try tor start rust.x86_64 manualy it fails also... so the problem seems to be with 64bit executable.
but i have no idea why for some people steam decideds to pick 64bit one?
my thoughts are that steam 32bit runtime is broken or isnt used at all. or system is missing some 32bit libs so its trying to start 64bit one.

Please do something. I know the game is in very alpha stage but I pay for it I deserve to play ! Don't make people pay if they cannot play...
I should notice that I can run ./rust.x86 from console without issue but I cannot connect to any server because steam is not detected. Even by pressing f1 and doing net.connect server_ip:port I got a "not steam detected, connection failed" error.
I aslo tried beta steam branch and rust live dev branch without success.

Hi hadim, I had the same problem on Ubuntu 13.10 64 bits. Seems like Steam is mixing 32 bits game library with 64 bits system libraries.
I solved the problem with the following two steps:
1 - Disable Steam Community In-Game
2 - Set launch options as follow: "LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. %command%" (no quotes)
