• Needs a map to see where the hell you are.

I went scavenging and with no map, I can't find my base again. The only way to get back to it is to die and I'm not about to do that with all the stuff in my inventory. Either a map or a directional arrow to show you where your toolbox cabinet is. A map would be better so you can work out where you are in relation to the rest of the world.
Next time don't wander so far from your base that you get lost. Or pay more attention to your surroundings and remember landmarks to find your way back. This has happened to all of us. Sometimes, when you can't find your way back for ages, you end up finding new stuff.
Compass would be fine. It's nothing unrealistic, perhaps it would be one of the most basic tools to craft.
Checking the sun/moon is your compass. Its a great survival value add to getting out and harvesting that you may get lost. I periodically turn around to check my directional status. That is also why you see a lot of building around landmarks as it makes it easier to find home. Nothing is more exciting than that feeling of being lost and starving, never giving up and surviving to keep your goodies.
Compass would be fine. It's nothing unrealistic, perhaps it would be one of the most basic tools to craft.
A compass would be great. If you can build electronic locks and functional sub-machine guns out junk compasses should be easy. Also, even idiots can get lost with compasses if they don't know how to use them with landmarks.
There aren't many landmarks atm. Plus, just because you could use sun and moon to guide you dosen't mean compass would be useless. Sun and moon only guides you to west and east. What about south and north?
Don't be useless, use the enviorment around you to indicate where your place is, don't travel too far out untill you've learned the area your in enough that your confident you won't get lost. It's really not that hard, if you don't want to loose your house, don't lose your sight of mind..
I have to agree with the counter-arguments. I actually don't understand how people get lost in this. The new maps on the official servers are 1/16th the size of what they were a few weeks/months ago and even then it wasn't that hard to find your way around (just slow). Sun and moon go east to west. Snow is to the north. Desert is south. Water is all around. There are usually very tall mountains in the northern areas. This is everything that you need to find the general area of your location. Once you are in the general area you should be able to find local landmarks or familiar spots to orient yourself.
Trail blaze, leave tracks, i like to place triangle foundations or lanterns but then i no longer ever lose my way..ever. Work on getting a better sense of direction. Thats just as good of a solution as a map. Also, using the search function before posting this thread would have done you well.
Trail blaze, leave tracks, i like to place triangle foundations or lanterns but then i no longer ever lose my way..ever. [editline]2nd December 2014[/editline] Ease up Grym. I still have friends in my life who think words like East and West are from some long lost science fiction novel. We always run the risk of getting lost travelling to the local convenience store :) LOL wtf? really? if the SUN is rising EAST, and EAST is directly on your RIGHT, guess where NORTH or SOUTH is?

I WAS "easing up", i LOL'ed
What we really need are glowing quest markers that appear on the horizon, so you can find your way to the next Raid Instance. Edit for the disagree list: The number of people unable to recognize basic sarcasm concerns and confuses me.

Maps??? Nope .... Compass, i could go with that...
This is a total n00b problem, and has been covered X number of times before! There is a perfectly good working compass in the sky! So you have to use your brain to figure it out, instead of having a big red arrow showing you where to go? Get over it. If you don't want to use your brain, don't play Rust, go and play FarmVille instead, and click on cows all day... So you ran around like a n00b for 20 mins, without paying any attention to where you were going, and got lost. We've all done it, (several times). Then you learn to play the game... Ask any veteran player whether they need a map and a compass, and they will say "Hell no!". Because they have learned how to play, which is far more rewarding. The sun rises in the east, sets in the west. Moss grows on the north side of trees. It's desert to the south, snow to the north, and grass/woodlands in the middle. You never venture far from your base until you are familiar with the surrounding area, and can find your way back. After a while this becomes second nature, like looking before you cross the road IRL. Look for the highest nearby point that you can see from your base, work out where your base is in relation to it, then navigate back to that. Look to see if you can see a coastline in the distance, then run parallel to that, so you can use it as a guide. Or leave you base in the morning, head east following the sun, spend the day gathering resources, then follow the setting sun west back to your base. There are lots of ways to not get lost, but they are techniques you learn from playing. Honestly, it is so much more rewarding to learn how to play the game, and solve these problems for yourself, rather than have someone hand-hold you all the way.
My server is modded to include the compass plugin so when you type "/compass" it tells you which direction you're facing. That's just because I'm too lazy to look up in the sky to determine my heading. Before that, I used the sun and moon to determine heading since they always rise and set at the same points on the horizon. Some kind of crafting ability to make a rudimentary map would be interesting. Make some paper, get some charcoal, and scribble yourself a caveman map or something, but honestly it sounds difficult to implement and ultimately not very useful if you know how to navigate anyway. I've gotten lost for days with tons of resources. Multiple times. Sometimes you get eaten by wolves or bears trying to sneak through the forest at night. Game over. Too bad. Sometimes you survive and make it home. That's what the game is all about. Surviving.
That's just because I'm too lazy to look up in the sky to determine my heading.
I use my shadow for directions (saves the stress and strain of looking up) and on a plus it also give you an idea of the time (length of shadow). Yes i have seen soo many post like this over the last 8~ months and the conclusion is normally, No to auto maps No to gps Yes to compass (why not there's no reason why we could not build one) Yes to maps ((but drawn by players) in this scenario you could write/draw anything on the paper in-game notes, pics or maps)
I cant fucking beleave this came up again!
I cant fucking beleave this came up again!
It comes up every week or two and has for months. Along with female characters and asking for the game to be finished already.
Finis nao or i qit rust 4evr
It comes up every week or two and has for months. Along with female characters and asking for the game to be finished already.
Well if they just gave us a compass and some tits the game would be finished.
I guess nonone knows there is a search function on the forums
I get lost sometimes but not for long. I see it like this. When i move house and i dont know the area i dont just say "ill walk for 4 hours see where i end up" cos your gonna get lost. Familiarize yourself with the local area till you know landmarks and know your local terrain then increase your knowledged area bit by bit keeping a familiar landmark/hill in sight and move out in ever-increasing circles. As has been mentioned here already use the sun and moon. we dont need a compass or glowing signs or some shit. I dont even really like the HUD as it is, it should only be visible when you perform an action key or are taking damage. Such a good looking game its a shame to spoil it with such things.
As an admin in Legacy you could always tell when the twelve year olds had landed in your server...and come to think about it, they didn't even have to be new players: "omg I'm so lost this game sucks" "Admin Teleport me to my friends pls?" "This server sucks there is no teleport" Older players as new joiners would always quietly explore, set themselves up a base in a nice spot etc and generally enjoy the game for what it was. It is no different (if not worse) in the new version. I remember first time playing legacy it took my friends and I around 2 hours to meet up and it was all part of the fun. If being lost or getting lost in this game frustrates someone to the point where they are whining about it in chat, or using the sun as a way to navigate is too hard or not enjoyable as a challenge it really isn't the game for you, come back when there is a bit more maturity.

Glad Garry isn't catering to people too dumb to figure out north/south when they know east/west.
Being able to run always in the same direction is great if you could run up all hills. Unfortunately, as with so many games, a slight hill stops you dead in your tracks even when it's no steeper than other hills you've climbed. Also, on some servers, a day only lasts 45 minutes. Some means of navigation would be helpful. If not a map of some sort, then a compass so we can use it day or night. I also have fog in the distance that obscures everything beyond a set distance so, using mountains as landmarks isn't easy. I have seen a youtube video where the players could see almost halfway across the island easily. That was frapsed when you could build silly structures because they built one to get right up to the aircraft that were doing airdrops. Not sure why mine is so foggy after 500 yards or so even though I have the graphics set to max.
A compass is a basic tool in the real world and Rust tries to emulate some basic aspects of the real world, so it's only natural to assume that your character could be able to craft basic tools for navigation. Since the XV century the human civilization used primitive tools for navigating overseas.

How do you think people got onto Australia 40,000 years ago? Polynesians developed wave maps that charted the wave reflection patterns created by different islands, and the way you determined the current was by getting into the water and feeling which way the current pulled your balls. No, seriously. But anyway, just because it's easy in the real world doesn't mean it belongs in Rust. Balance and design come before adherence to realism.
