I think someone needs to hire some docs to do a study of players. Last night I had an experience that has turned me into a cold blooded killer (in Rust, to clarify). Seriously, I'm a changed person. I look at everyone in this game now as a threat and act accordingly. I'm even starting to wonder if real life people are lying to me just to hatchet me in the back of the head. This game is messed up - for real yo.
So, I have about 120 hours now. Was outside working on my huge ass base, and some naked comes running up the hill. In-game voice chat:
Him: hey, hey, can you help me, a wolf is chasing me
Me: *I kill the wolf chasing behind him up the hill* - there ya go. Gather some food.
Him: Hey thanks man, he was going to eat me
Me: Yea, I hear ya. It's dangerous out there. What's your deal?
Him: I just started playing, but I keep dying. I died like 20 times yesterday.
Me: Yea, it's a dangerous world out there. Do you have a place to live?
Him: No, I keep getting killed and no one will help me. Can you help me?
Me: Yea there are a lot of unhelpful people around. What do you need help with?
Him: Can you cook my chicken for me?
Me: No, but here is some wood. You can make a fireplace and cook it yourself.
Him: *He drops a fireplace, cooks his chicken. I keep working on my base, keeping an eye on him*
Now at this point, my base in up on a hill, and we have the biggest base. But there are two other small shacks that we allowed players to build. People we trust. We offer them a safe place to live and have agreed to help protect them in the event of a raid. They throw us metal and wood as payment. (It's a nice system). So now, I feel bad for this naked guy, and offer to help him out.
Me: Listen, if you want to build a little shack nearby, you can. We will watch out for you for a few days (in-game) until you get your feet wet and have some supplies.
Him: That'd be great, but I don't know how to build a shack.
Me: You can craft it out of wood.
Him: I don't have any wood.
Me: Ok, wait here, I'll be right back.
I run into my base and grab some planks - enough to make him a 1x1 with a wooden door. I go back outside, and find a suitable spot, and lay his foundation. Just as I lay the foundation, a pick axe to the back of the head, I'm dead, he steal all my supplies on me and a shotgun.
Now, everyone is KOS. I didn't even give them a chance to say hello. If I see you, you're dead. Simple as that.
I think I'm a serial killer now. Help me.
Thanks.
Don't go to Wal-Mart.
There is something i don't understand in this game, and all survival games
Why the fuck everyone kill people at range ??
Do you kill people IRL ?
For no reason people kill people, why this automatism ?
Can't we have neighboors in game ? Can't we trade materials ? can't we invit someone to eat some fresh chicken ??
This game turned into a CoD game, i don't like this
We need safe zones.

"Keep your back to the wall" has never been more meaningful to me. I can't explain in a forum how violated I felt by this guy. This incident didn't happen over 2 minutes. We were talking and together in-game for at least 20 minutes. He played it great - totally got me to get my guard down and even give him supplies and a pick axe. I was killed by the freakin pick axe that I gave him.
This game is crazy.

Sounds hilarious. That's why you treat EVERYONE, nakeds ESPECIALLY, as deadly threats until they prove otherwise.
Clearly you never played Fallout Online. That shit was the most intense gaming I ever did, EVERYONE is probably max level and has a weapon capable of 1 shotting you and WILL do so at the slightest provocation.
This game is an asshole generator... I've even started shooting first and asking questions later.
Theory: Rust is a social experiment paid for by the government. Dun dun Dun!!!!!
We need safe zones.
Search for posts by me. With 35 hours in to the game, I started a thread calling for safe zones. Everyone bashed me. I now have 125 hours in-game, a safe zones are a horrible idea. I changed my mind, you will change yours eventually.
I kill people in game because I'm not allowed to kill in real life. I thank the powers that be that I have been provided a safe outlet for my desires. Otherwise... who knows.

In Garry's mod this happens often in dark"rp". You meet with someone, play for an hour, get a base, collect money, work together, help each other out, then when one has to go or gets bored they steal all the stuff, remove their elements of the base and kill you.

Yes, once you have a super duper base with 40 sleeping bags and beds and 10 guns of each kind and more ammo stashed away that can fit in a house.. then yes. If you happen to get killed, you just respawn and get fully equipped in no time. The problem are the fresh spawns.
Anyways... to OP:
Yes, those people are the ones that actually "convert" friendly players that only shoot if getting shot at or raided into that same type of assholes that ruin the game from newcomers.
Why the fuck everyone kill people at range ??
They can.
Do you kill people IRL ?
I don't think so. That's why they're doing it ingame.
For no reason people kill people, why this automatism ?
"Wow, i got a gun! Now I have to shoot people, because that's what you do in a game with ego perspective!"
They see their characters holding a nice, shiny weapon and instantly feel like they're in a military themed FPS.
Also, there are not enough threats to force people to play together. You just have to be lucky to meet a person who want's to play this game just like you. Imho.
Or the guys that run around claiming friendly, friendly...and you reply yep and ask them if they need anything...and when your looking in your inventory for what you can help them out with...BAM they kill you. I trust no one aside from real people I know on this game. I've only killed twice and decided it's not for me, over 100 hours in game and have only been killed a few times. But I've had so many opportunities to kill just to do it and I just don't care to. I enjoy cat and mouse stuff where I mention to people hey I see you...but never kill them.
I stay in the shadows, I build, resource hunt and when my friends are online we do those things together. I really dig the survival aspect..funny thing is if there was a Survivorman type game with no other human element added I would play the hell out of it.

Where is that roaming giant Garry was talking about...that would make people play together.
I like the early survival and building aspect stuff the most in Rust. The modern weapons and explosives just doesnt feel like it belongs. This is alpha though so who knows whats coming.
It's ok for you lot, you're all in a position to decide whether or not to KOS.
I've been playing for a week or so now and have never lived long enough to craft any weapon other than a bow and arrow. I'm getting real sick of it! I love the game and think it could be awesome, but how am I meant to get anywhere when I get killed constantly in game and when I quit and lock myself in a shack, by the time I come back I'm dead again and have to start from nothing.

Try a new server, I can't imagine not being able to find one that wouldn't allow you enough space to breath and claim new gear. Do you hunt for plans and resources? On a new server, even a populated on I can typically get my house built and loads of resources within an hour or so.

Yeah, stuff like that. I actually thought about a sinbad the adventurer kind of island. With an cyclops, medusa, giant turtles and birds.
Some would be passive, like medusa having her lair somewhere while some would be active, like the cyclops, wandering through the mountains and being attached by any movement and of course cities.
@ jonest27,
I think Rust get's shitty if you're on a server with 30+ people online. It took me like 200 hours of gaming to finally find a server with a nice admin and a good community that I can enjoy.

This is why I always say: "No loose ends." If anyone I don't know is near my base they meet death.
unfortunately like most games out there, there is no enemy to make it worthwhile to band together except against other players. No mobs that require cooperation to kill or survive. they can just be outrun if in danger. like to see something like World War Z as the enemy. Stealth missions to get supplies in small bands, large groups have large firefights to raid the overrun towns for blueprints and medicines or to protect bases at night for when some fool shines a light or makes noise.

yep, this is me and my crew now, we have always tried to help out those we came across, and after repeatedly being killed by "friendlies" were sick of it and now we KoS too. i hate it but it's the only way we can survive.
I still meet cool people. One guy gave me a house and starting supplies and I do the same. Basically if I am just messing around on a server, when I log off I just give all my stuff away.
But, the game does mess with your mind. Where I live I have large round boulders with a frequency almost the same as Rust. Every time I see them, my first thought is get a pick ax and go mining.

We kill people because there isn't enough resources. If i see someone in my lands, its a KOS no warning. Because i know if i let them get ahead, then i will have to deal with them raiding me at some point.
OP: you broke the first rule of Rust-- Stranger Danger
The second rule is probably "No good deed goes unpunished."
Imagine all the trolls in the internet getting together in one place and screwing with you every way they can. That place is Rust.
The only people I trust in Rust are the people I knew before I started playing. Everyone else, even good friends I've met in the game, go into a different box of "maybe I can trust them one day, but not yet." I may let them think I trust them... but I don't.
Your motto should be: TRUST NO ONE. EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF.
That's the only thing that is going to keep you alive.
Sounds like you are playing a good ol game of Rust! This game is anti social but it is a fun challenge, you need to understand how Americans work. It is a game of opportunity and rash decision making. Do I let this guy help me? Or pickaxe him when he isn't looking? Or do I do both? Maybe I'll befriend him for a few days, gain base access, c4 his front door and take over his house? His fault for trusting.

Which is exactly how it would be if society actually collapsed to this degree...

Hey not sure if your saying us Americans are heartless backstabbers but if you are I take offense to that! So far a Korean, Russian and an American (ok maybe a Canadian you really can't us apart but a few key words). But I have helped people and I am American. And lets not forget who invented this social backstabbing KOS game, the damn British they are the sickos ;).
It says a lot about someone who, if capable of defending him/herself, will choose to forego KOS to try helping someone out, while still keeping an eye out for deceit. That's when you're a next level player in my opinion.
I leave enough room for them to get maybe a shot off before I'm on their ass. Just never stop moving so it's likely not a headshot.
This game really gives you options.
I've built monuments. I've raided bases in swat team fashion along with friends. I've lined up bandits and executed them. I've died to animals, other players, zombies, and air drops (once). Ive founded a slave labor camp. I've stripped naked and pickaxe dueled a man for his freedom from a 1x1 we built around him. I've waited for 10 minutes on top of a box for my friend to open the door and run into my ass.
No other game has the insane capability to do all this, and make you really get into it. For better or worse, i've played this game. It may have changed me, but I'm ok with that.
Safe zones lol.
me and the people i play with dont KOS, although if fired upon we will return fire, find your home, steal your stuff, kill you in your sleep, put up our own door, and THEN KOS everytime we see you. Several times some upstarts try to prove their epeen is bigger. They swiftly, and completely get put in their place. Our server is a lonely one
