How about an area which could be controlled by a group of players ( a sort of resource hotspot )
Sawmills & Mining / water collection / food resources could be inside this area.
Teams could fight over that area and gain control of it for 1-2 hours, there could be defences ( fixed : guns / catapults / crossbows ) to protect it.
Whilst in control of the area each team member could access the facilities and take resources from it ( at an amount per 15 minutes or so )
The area could be fought over and taken by any other group / team at any time, once control has been lost either through battle or timer it is free to be re-taken.
It would make a fun area for people to PvP and encourage grouping and team play.

I don't remember anyone saying it wasn't.....
What I am talking about is an advancement of the link Mr Knifey posted, it would be nice to have a specific area ( or town ) which can be controlled for the holders benefits.
You gain good rewards from holding that area for as long as you can.
It sounds artificial. I am sure a server community can create these scenarios but i think it kinda goes against the open world concept of rust. It would draw everyone to a central location
i like the idea of expensive craftable items, or landmarks with these sorts of functions. it would promote teamwork, and create interest points worth fighting over.
the reason i posted the link is because this is pretty much what was being discussed over there;)
^^^^ I concur.
Maybe an experimental patch with economy.
Just give us resource hot spots. Nothing is more boring than exiting my front door and having an abundant amount of resources 2 feet from my door.
