Why is no one sharing any good procedural maps? Is it because they are all pretty much the same in terms of how good they are - so no one feels any need to share or ask about good seeds?
I was hoping some really cool maps would be found, and better yet a few would emerge as common ones used (because they are good). What's the story with this? They are all kind of generic and the same?
There have been several threads here and on reddit. Might have to do a bit of digging.
This is a good resource http://www.playrusthq.com/map-gallery
My question still remains, why are very few people talking about good seeds; are there any that are unique, or are they all kind of the same for gameplay. I follow this forum and reddit, and hardly ever see any posts about the specific maps or a good seed. As in, maybe 3 posts about it over the last 6 months.
Are all seeds pretty much the same for gameplay? I do remember a few people talking about their specific map.
Because there are over a billion seeds.

So wouldn't that make you think that there might be a handful that really got people's attention or seemed extra cool?
@utilitron
You are kind of missing the point. If the seeds are very different, and some maps are very good, then people will share the seeds. Ever heard of an indie game called Minecraft?
I am guessing all the different maps (seeds) are kind of generic and don't offer that much different, but I am asking for other people's experience - if they think this is true. I don't want to sidetrack this thread into a discussion between the two of us though.
You may like it or you may not - I have kept my server on 69666 for about 3 months now, my players seem to love it and aren't keen to move off it, though we did recently change the size from 6k > 5k. Here's a map for the 5k one here.
Before that we were on 6969 for a few months also before all the terrain changes a while back made it no longer suit our purposes, hence the move to 69666.
The terrain generated from given sizes/seeds changes every 4 weeks - so even if we had one big topic where everyone shared 'good' values, they would be outdated by now.
What I could do is allow visitors to 'vote' on maps then we could have a 'top rated maps' section on PlayRustHQ if that would interest anyone? At least then you have an automated way of seeing what some of the better sizes/seeds are, and it could reset every time the terrain generation changed.
It's probably worthless (as it doesn't indicate good seeds, just how many servers use them), but here's a list of sizes + seeds which are used by 5 servers or more:

Nice. Thanks for the info.
In Minecraft anyone could generate their own map and play on it, with ease. Unless I'm completely ignorant, there's no way to do that in Rust. You need to own a server and most people who actually own a server aren't using it to investigate potential seeds.
I'd love to generate seeds and run around on my own map from time to time, and my kids would love it-- but-- no dice, yet. Someday, they say.

...someday...
We Use 21776
It is basically 2 island connected by 1 land bridge and 3 man made bridges.
The North Island is for the players who are more adventuress and more end-game play where as the South Island is great for beginners as it is easy to explore and has plenty of resources and caves.

On the other hand, anyone can download the Rust dedicated server for free. If their machine's powerful enough, and they're the only one on the server and don't build insane amounts, running a server and the client side-by-side would probably not be unplayable so there isn't even a cost to it. And if performance is too poor to defend against animals, they can just set themselves in god mode while they look around. Of course, if someone has more than one machine available, they can run the server separately.
If anyone's specifically doing this, they haven't made a big deal of sharing it or what they've found with the rest of the community, though.
I might use my old machine (the one people'll have seen me mentioning/bitching about once in a long while for the past ~2 years) to host a local server and use it to explore seeds, maybe. The procedural generation excited me from the start so it might be worthwhile spending time seeing just what it can do in a comprehensive way. I'd probably fly around for efficiency, obviously.
If I found really cool terrains on a regular enough basis, I'd definitely start a thread to catalogue the finds here for others to try out, organized by procgen revision so seeds from the latest version of the game would be at the top of the OP instead of buried under out-of-date seeds. Would anyone be interested in that? (Instead of posting "yes" and spamming up the thread, please just rate this post Useful if you want to show your interest.)
I don't know that I'd have the time and effort to build an entire website around it, but I could maintain a thread.
