I've only had Rust about 5 days now, but my first human encounter was funny enough that I thought I would share.
A co-worker of mine recommended the game, so I hopped on. He warned me constantly that I will probably be killed on sight and have all my stuff jacked, so my paranoia level from the start was pretty intense.
The first server I joined was some random one from the modded list with no other players on it. I traveled to the nearest mountain range and built myself a hut with a wooden door. A day later, I am outside with darkness approaching crafting my very first shotgun when I look up and see two people with guns standing on a rock looking down at me.
In terror, I switch my axe (have not yet crafted bullets) and run around a boulder into a corner and crouch in the darkness. The guy comes around the corner and looks at me, so I bolt again back to my hut and close/lock the door behind me. Looking back, the hilarity of my mindset at the time was that I was "safe" now.
In any case, I crafted some shells and loaded the shotgun to go out guns ablaze only to find out these guys were the server admins and friendly. They just trying to talk to me, but I wasn't hearing.
Being a newbie is a pretty pathetic experience, but sometimes its just sad and hilarious. The admins there ended up breaking into my 2x2 that I built and put down like 50 campfires inside and spelled the word "Hi" outside my front door with those campfires. I am sure they thought that was funny, but I found it adolescent. Today, I am four days into the LONG HAUL server and likely there to stay.
My tip to new players is to go into it knowing you will probably give up on a lot of places before finding a server that works for your style of play. Just keep at it.
As for me, I am just looking forward to seeing how Rust will evolve!

I find this game better going in with only the fundamentals explained and figuring out the rest on your own. "Ok so running up on people isn't a good idea" "Ok so the hangar isn't a good place to build" "ok radtown is swarming with players 24/7"
