Recently a user called "vens1o1" posted an idea (http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1327299&p=42957746) about moving players while they sleep. As a result it made me greatly think about Griefing and Trolls in Rust (or sandbox games similar to it). Here are my opinions on the matter, please tell me if you agree or disagree and why.
Lets start with griefing. Everyone dislikes getting their house griefed, some people dislike it to an extent they think it should be a "bannable" offence. This is a choice only an admin can make, it's their server so there is no correct answer. In Rust's current Alpha state banning players for griefing isn't practical. You need to actually witness the player griefing and find out their name. You couldn't really implement an automatic griefing ban either, as there are many ambiguous situations that could occur. However lets pretend this is possible and we can identify griefers and immediately ban them. In this environment raiders become very one-dimensional, they take your stuff or not.
Now on the flipside lets take a server where griefing is allowed. Raiders now have more complex personalities, you can have good and bad ones. Where a good raider would simply steal your stuff and a bad raider would not only steal your stuff but completely ruin your house. This is why I ultimately think griefing isn't a bad thing, but a good thing. There are definitely some things that need to be fixed, such being able to destroy stairs and place a ceiling. Or being able to place a ramp when a pillar is blocking the way. These inconsistencies unfortunately give a bad name to griefing.
Now onto trolls, many activities may count as "trolling" but for this post trolling doesn't include hacking, that should be undoubtedly bannable. Many people disagree with suggested features that might "encourage trolls". Likewise to my opinion on griefers I think trolls are a good thing. With trolls the line of good and bad is often blurred, a troll might do something for a number of different reasons. A server which allows trolls gives players an increased amount of interactions and therefore more interesting things can happen. More funny/tragic/epic stories can then be told, and more lessons learnt. I also think trolls fit well into a post-apocalyptic world such as rust, it makes the good players really stand out.
To end I just want to say, everyone plays games for different reasons. I completely understand why someone would want to play in a server where griefers and trolls are banned. I just wanted to express my opinions and see what you thought. This is a really interesting subject as the vision of Rust in Facepunch's eyes can be very different to that of a player or admin. I'm really curious what Facepuch's philosophy is on this subject.
I can only see griefing as an understandable action when is your neighbour (enemy) and you want to be safe, but going to the other side of the map and raiding a house to grief it after that will only make lower the population of the server and that will hurt you as you won't have anyone to play against (or with). But griefing your neighbours I see it as a legitimate action as you are only trying to "completely kill" them.
NylePudding, i love your opinion on individual players. You made a good and correct study of how rust players interact with each other and made some valid points on griefing and trolling...
The thing is, at our stage (alpha) we can't predict what it will be when we get a static server with 0% wipes and what people will think if trollers/gruefers go there and break the server. Ruining houses and simply trolling servers is not an act that will be punished with ban because people by this game to play it like they want it (except when there is something explicit saying on the EULA). After all, Rust is not the first game that we faced griefers and trollers...if our game becomes less interesting because of them...then a solution will come and we will probably have a full pvp server with house building disable and simply fps power! :D
I don't know what will happen but still...I think we probably shouldn't hate trollers nor griefers and just play our game the way it is supposed to!

Thanks! I wanted to make it clear people play games for different reasons, and there isn't a right answer. I really look forward to the future of this game, it will be fun to see what different servers provide. :)
