If so, how the **** do you survive? They're literally crawling with hackers, and the only way to seemingly survive is what many others (not me however) do: ally with them.
I'd play on a non-official server, but the populations are generally much lower, and I've experienced abusive admins in the past.
I started on an official server. Got a couple houses built. Only seen one person hacking so far. And I know he was because he was flying. Do seem to glitch and lag when fighting someone. So just avoid people now.
What server? I'm on NA3.
There's so many hackers on that server; I kid you not.
If you don't ally with them and pay them 'taxes', they will headshot you. Through your house. At night. With all hits connecting.
So go play other games that are actually fun for a few months if you don't want to deal with the official servers OR current community servers. Then come back and see how things are doing.

We have a clan on east coast 3 that likes to tax people. They are terrible shots, often times missing every shot and allowing people to escape. That being said everyone hates the x17 'clan' on east coast 3. I have made several bases on them without being killed by hackers
Taxing people in Rust? That's a first for me to be honest. I'd blast a fucker who told me to pay him.
Regardless, no, I don't play on Official servers for that reason, it's a cesspool.
I generally stick to the modded servers, trying to find a creative server currently so I can test some house concepts.

U cant avoid hackers. They see u from far far away. See ur boxes. U just not interesting to them yet or smth. Try to avoid death when they go around with 180 degree insta kill radius around them. Uk2 is completely unplayable for that reason.

Even community ones are full of glitchers that sit inside rocks killing bypassers.

Yes. This is what everyone has began to do. Therefore, if you kill anyone, even a casual, non-hacking player -- They will call up their hacking friend (who more than likely is an active player w/ 100s+ of hours) and have them teleport-wall-insta-pistol-kill you.
Not only does it suck but it is getting worse.
It can be hard to get established, but once you've got a good start you need to spread out to different parts of the map. Yes there are a lot of hackers but they normally come and go; you have to have multiple bases you can spawn to so you can grind in the quiet non-hacker areas when the hacks are on.
I run with cloth, revolver, and pipe shotgun when the hackers are on. I always go back for my bag, too, as they normally only take guns and ammo.
