• Ladders and Tool Cupboards....A Reminder Why We Have Tool Cupboards

I've seen a TON of posts complaining about ladders ignoring cupboards. But I just wanted to take a moment to remind people that when cupboards came online in the beginning they weren't there to protect your base from being raided, they were there to protect it from being griefed and Garry let us know that. The result was a super comfy security blanket that caused people to put 20 tool cupboards in a 3 mile radius of their rock base so no one could get in, this was never the intent. As Rust matures and the continue to develop, the base builders will get more tools, traps, parts, and pieces to build a base that is harder to raid. Sure right now they can get on your roof, but that doesn't mean you lose and can't have a base, it just means you need to change your thinking and how you build. Like the old days with the pillar/barricade climbing, it caused me to build a 15 story base, and put stuff in random places. Sure, they could get in, and sure...they could raid me, but they had to be pretty lucky to make a profit. TLDR; It's an alpha and one month it will favor the raider, the next it'll favor the base builder...in the end, they'll figure it all out so try to enjoy the ride :)
Cupboards did not protect your base. They prevent people from BUILDING near or in your base. That is all! It reduced a few exploits that raiders used. Twig towers right next to your base and jumping in windows. Breaking into roofs. Ladders now bring that whole back.
I was under the impression main reason cupboards were added was to stop people from being entombed in their bases. They achieved that goal but then shot down all manner of siegecraft. Now we have ladders back. Its an evolution. If it sucks they'll remove it.
Cupboards protect the house against raiding. There is no more to say.
Cupboards do not protect your base from being raided. It stops people from building around your base and keep people from griefing your base (until they authorize on the cupboard anyway). Any base with cupboards can be raided. I haven't seen a single base yet, even water and rock bases that can't be raided by someone determined to raid it.
There's some middle ground here, guys. Cupboards do add a degree of protection to a base against raiding (not just griefing). Its not a foolproof method. It adds some protection but that protection can be circumvented with enough effort. The amount of argument that goes on here over semantics is pretty amazing.
With the addition of ladder it doesn't protect against raiding any more.
Honestly they should just go back to the old building rules but it seems like the cabinets are here to stay. I for one welcome ladders. Cabinets dont really prevents griefing because once someone is inside they just build a bunch of stones blocks in there anyways with the resources they loot. Only thing it prevents is someone strolling by and putting blocks in front of your door. But the old building rules prevented that because they couldn't build on your foundations.

Then make like 5 more 1x1 rooms all over your base and put the fake cabinets in there.

like the guy at the start of this thread stated. Legacy rust you could get blocked in your base and people would use foundations, pillars and barricades to get to the roof. ladders just bring back something that Legacy had. cupboards help with the getting blocked/locked in part. so ladders just mean windows and roofs need to be protected just like in legacy. I want to be able to push a ladder off the wall when someone is climbing it - that would be cool :)
I want to be able to push a ladder off the wall when someone is climbing it - that would be cool :)
Wonder wut would happen if you were to shoot one and destroy it while they were on it...could be a good reason to build a couple 1X1 towers around ur base. So if they are climbing up the side you can pop the ladders down

Of course, rather than shooting the ladder maybe you just shoot the climber-- but yeah, its interesting.
