I have been questioning what would be a more logical weapon to start out with, I mean axe is better than knife all the way but who would have that while stranded on a island right from the start. I think there should be some introductory start up that will intro all the things about Rust before you start playing.
in example; start with nothing more than just a knife, find a warehouse that will have just the most basic recipes you need for the most basic things you need to know how to build it, than a zombie sneaks up and you kill it. That drops an axe which is stuck in it's side or something like that. Maybe all this isn't necessary, i haven't played the game. Just seen a few good videos.
Being that the game is in alpha, i think it's going along very well from what ive seen in the videos. Can't wait till it's out or atleast open Beta :)
knife would mean no hatchet to start with, thus not gathering wood, and making the game impossible to atleast do something in it
and the warehouse idea is stupid as fuck because there's spawnkillers, who can hide in that warehouse
you can make a hatchet out of wood and rocks/other material, be more creative.
the warehouse is just a general idea, not saying its near perfect. obviously it would need to be designed in a way that prevents any noobs from doing that.

i got it, start off with fucking nothing like a survival game
then you find piles of wood where you can craft your hatchet
and there should be one way to craft flares
Or you can always start out with a knife, and a pile of materials(wood/metal) to introduce you to the materials, than kill your first zombie which can be an intro tut on how to kill them (which is tangled or something like that, so its an easy kill) with a knife.
zombie dies, you pick pocket; and within his shirt pocket are hand-drawn plans for a hatchet or what ever the weapon of choice may be at start.
than you get your first chance to craft your first weapon. from there you just work you way up.
that is how it should be introduced. but again thats just one mans idea for a intro.
