Note to all the intermediate to skilled players, this is a guide mainly for newcomers to the Fun-Filled game of Rust! Now i'm sure you already knew this when you bought the game, but if not, Rust is a 1st person game in which you are trying to survive a post Apocalyptic world filled with Zombies, Radiation, Aggressive Animals, and of course, other players. Also note: Each server is a different game completely, you may have a house and tons of weapons on one server, but if you joined a different one, you start new again. Starting Out When you join a server, you spawn in a random location usually near a road. If you look in the bottom of your screen, you will see a bar with 6 item slots, known as a Hot Bar. To switch between items in this Hot Bar, press the corresponding key on your computer. First things first, take a look at your environment, look for any immediate danger like players, if on a PvP server, if not, Aggressive Animals like wolves or Bears, After getting accustomed to your surroundings, Look for any of these 3 things, A big boulder that looks out of place somewhere on the ground, a log pile which is a bunch of logs in a pile, or any Animals (Preferably Non Aggressive like Pigs or Deer). If you can't find any of these right away, head to the nearest tree. You're going to want to press '1' key or just switch to your Item that is 2 hands holding a rock. This is the melee weapon you start with every time you join a server or die. Note that it is weak and slow. Head to whatever you found, and start left clicking it when you get close enough. This is how you obtain things like wood, or how to kill an animal. If you've killed an animal, hit it more when it's on the ground until it disappears. That is how you obtain Food and Cloth, these 2 items are one of the most important items in the game besides wood and stone. Crafting One of the most important things when you start is to get a total of 85 wood and a decent amount of cloth and food. By pressing tab, you open up your inventory, your inventory is what you're carrying on your person, move things in your inventory by holding left click and dragging it. At the top of your screen while in inventory, click 'crafting'. This will bring up a large tab of a lot of stuff you can craft, look for 'Wood Shelter' and click on it, then click 'craft'. You will see a time next to the 'craft' and that is how long it will take to make it, while you are crafting something, you move slower. After your wood shelter finishes, drag it to an open spot in your hot bar, then switch to the wood shelter and it will show a red or green outline of the shelter, red means you can't place it there, green means you can. Find a decent place to setup your starting home. To place it, left click. After you have placed your shelter, go back to the crafting menu and craft a Wooden Door. Doors can be tricky to place, the best technique to place it is to look at the door frame while holding it. Then left click again to place it. You now have a shelter just for you! Make sure to shut the door to keep unwanted visitors from entering. It is now locked for everyone except you but note that if players have the time, they can break down a door. Next craft and place a camp fire somewhere in your house. Eating raw foods can give you salmonella, which can drain your hunger even faster. So to cook, you need a food source, and wood to burn as a fuel. Hover over the camp fire, and click 'e' or your 'use' button. Then place your food in the 'food' spot, and place your logs in the 'fuel' spot. now exit the fire place and just click 'e' once more, this will ignite your fire. Cooking food takes a short amount of time. To check if your food is cooked, hover over your campfire and hold 'e' continue holding it while clicking 'open' if your food is done, it will appear cooked, you can then drag it to your inventory. To eat, place it in your hotbar and just click the corresponding number you placed it in. Also, don't forget to extinguish your fire or it will keep using up your logs. Enemies can also destroy your tent so you can't spawn there. And this is pretty much it on how to survive your first night, I will post a guide on other steps to survive soon. In this game when it becomes night, it gets dark, and I mean really dark, so be prepared for that. Here are some things I got from facepunch.com Some helpful tips: Using voice chat (v) can be an effective way to determine another players mindset, or to communicate that you are friendly, be warned however many people are liars and thieves and will claim friendly under the guise of murdering you and taking all your stuff. It's best not to build your shelter close to resource areas or other high traffic areas where curious players may decide to break in and see what you have Stay away from people who are armed! If your framerate is lagging hard and you've already gone fullscreen at a lower resolution to no avail, you can turn off grass by typing 'grass.on false' into the console (F1)
tl;dr: 1. spawn 2. get some rock and some wood 3. make hatchet 4. run around forever until you find a pig with no bear/wolf near it (usually easiest to find if you look for deer) 5. kill pig - use hatchet to harvest meat 6. get wood and rock 7. if its near dark, find a secluded spot and build you a shack and put a fire down in it 8. if its light, just find a secluded spot and build a fire 9. cook meat 10. you're off and running
Thanks OP. Could be really helpful the first time someone plays. I really like this too:
tl;dr: 1. spawn 2. get some rock and some wood 3. make hatchet 4. run around forever until you find a pig with no bear/wolf near it (usually easiest to find if you look for deer) 5. kill pig - use hatchet to harvest meat 6. get wood and rock 7. if its near dark, find a secluded spot and build you a shack and put a fire down in it 8. if its light, just find a secluded spot and build a fire 9. cook meat 10. you're off and running
I would add: (after getting a stone hatchet, and killing your first pig, and cooking for food) 10. Get enough wood to build a shelter and a wood door, now that you have food. Make your shelter with door for safety. 11. You can optionally make a storage box and put items in this to keep them a little safer. 12. Kill another pig until you have 5 cloth so you can craft a bow. Your first night you can make a fire in your house and be pretty safe - so I would not craft any cloth armor yet. 13. With a bow (from cloth and wood) and arrows (from stones and wood), you can suddenly hunt much easier. Kill a few more pigs, or a dear, to get more meat and cloth. Hunting with a bow can be much easier than a hatchet. 14. Now you have enough food and can craft some armor. Advanced: 15. Get cloth for a sleeping bag - so you can respawn in your shelter. 16. Start running to some building to loot items (to get more cloth, food, a gun, or enough metal for a hatchet). 17. Make sure you have a safe, hidden shelter, or two. That's how I do it. The hardest part for me is when I first spawn and am running out of food. Finding a pig and then chasing him down with a stone hatchet can be a real pain for me. It is the hardest point of the game for me right now. I also may run up to some players when I first start and see if they will give me a chicken. Works sometimes and can make things easier.
*TIP* Get a bear or wolf to chase you to a wood pile. Jump on top of wood pile, crouch and inch forward untill you can hit the animal with your rock or hatchet. May have to look straight down. Good amount of cloth and food to start the game with
