I'm having a problem connecting to servers. I'm not running a mac i have windows 7 worked fine for a week, and whenever I try to connect to a server, the loading screen gets stuck on "Waiting for Character" indefinitely, only way to close it is ctrl alt tap and shut it down plus steam keep saying its running when i can see its not ive looked online and some people are having the same problems but are using a mac. Is there a way to fix this?

Right click Rust in your Steam library and hit verify local files. This should fix any corrupted files in your install. It may need to re-download some files first.
If that doesn't work post back here with a DxDiag.
yeah i try both of them didnt work, and how do i do that again ? lol
Instructions for attaching a dxdiag file to a post. This is often a good idea when submitting an error on this forum:
-Go to the Start Menu, click Run, and type in dxdiag (in Vista type dxdiag into the search box at the bottom of the start menu)
-Once in the diagnostic tool hit "Save All Information", select a folder to save it in, and save this file as a simple text document.
-Then go to your forum post and copy-paste the contents of the text file.

The above copy-pasta explains it :)

Update your graphics driver from here:
[url]http://support.amd.com/en-us/download[/url]
There is an auto-detect tool so you don't have to worry about getting the wrong one.
Also, is there any reason why you're running at 1680x1050? I'm just curious as it's not a resolution a lot of people use.
If the graphics driver update doesn't help. We'll try something else. If anyone else can spot something I've missed, jump in :D
[editline]3rd February 2014[/editline]
Also, try a different server.
Some people have said it could be a whitelisting issue. When you get stuck on that screen, press F1 and see if it mentions anything about you not being whitelisted on the server.
The other fix people were saying were to start the game in a lower resolution than usual. In the options reduce the render level down to lowest and retry connecting to the server.
Hope one of these works for you!
is there a resin its not giving a time and how much to download on the AMD auto detect ?
I've not personally used it and I'm at work so can't test for you, sorry.
Give it a few minutes and if you're still stuck with it I'll remotely log in at home and test on my machine for you.
ive tryed all of that lol was looking for info all day trying to get this game to work again.
If none of the above has helped, even after the graphics driver update, it might be worth re-installing. It's not a big game and shouldn't take too long.
Post back if it works for others to see :)
will do thank you for the help btw, im still updating the divers atm.
No worries :)
Hopefully they will fix it.
Have you tried overclocking anything like the gfx card? Also is it just for Rust or does this happen on other games?
just rust, and i didn't think of doing that because every game ive plays on this computer can work great on max setting.
Hmm ok, then a re-install should fix it. I'm not aware of people having to open up ports to get Rust to work but that could be something.
After the driver update, if it still doesn't work when you try to lower the settings. Re-install. If it's still not working from there, we'll have another think.
Ok so that didnt work still stop at Waiting for Character...tryd different server too.
[editline]3rd February 2014[/editline]
going to re install it again
Ok cool.
The re-install shouldn't take long. I'll keep checking here to see how it went.
know im running into this where its saying the game is still running but i cant see it at all onyl place i see it is in the processes
[editline]3rd February 2014[/editline]
even when i close it down from there i have to restart my computer to even get rust to play from the start
After the next reboot, open steam instead of Rust itself first. It may need to perform an update.
ok
ill be back them should be no longer then 2mins
[editline]3rd February 2014[/editline]
Well still a no go....
[editline]3rd February 2014[/editline]
Jewelazn13 and jiggyjinjo are you both having the same problem ?
Does it hang at the same point?
Is there anything unusual written if you press F1 at the point where it hangs?
Try disabling your firewall then re-running Rust to see if that is what is blocking the connection. I'll have a search around regarding ports etc. to see if there might be something that needs opening.
[editline]3rd February 2014[/editline]
Also, can you think of anything that has changed with your hardware/software since it was working before and when it stopped working?
ok
[editline]3rd February 2014[/editline]
Nope got on this morning worked fine then died loged off for no more then a hr1 and then this started happing.
If disabling the firewall doesn't work I'm out of ideas :(
It might be a case for Steam Support. They should be able to help you.
lol ill try them but im sure they will just point me to the ppl who make rust to fix my problem
Restart steam..
[QUOTE=Magik;43770312]Restart steam..[/QUOTE]
He's tried that :) He's been rebooting his system.
nope......:suicide:
Dunno then buy new pc , install windows 8..
[QUOTE=Magik;43770356]Dunno then buy new pc , install windows 8..[/QUOTE]
Have you considered a career in tech support? You seem to have a gift.
yes spend all that money just for one game....get out of here with that lol.
[editline]3rd February 2014[/editline]
Well thanks anyways een im at a lose....u have been a lot of help.
Sorry I couldn't help you more.
Someone might still jump in with a stroke of genius but I think your best option now is to contact steam support, maybe even linking them to this thread so they can see what you've already tried.
Good luck :)
[editline]3rd February 2014[/editline]
FYI there is an update rolling out at the moment in some regions/servers so that might be part of the problem!
Might be worth trying again in a couple of hours, make sure to restart steam to try trigger any downloads properly :D
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
