I sure this has be mentioned before, but as the server numbers start to grow I will ask again....
What about backpacks that provide some indication about the value of your inventory.
- If you are a noob, your backpack is basically not visible. The only package you have is.....
- As you gather resources your backpack grows is size indicating to others that you're a running cargo vessel.
- As you add advanced gear, your backpack changes colour or those weapons are visible on the backpack sticking out every which way.
- As the backpack gets bigger, you run slightly slower. This could also apply to carrying weapons. A barehanded naked should be the fastest runner (and do they need it). This can be a touchy topic and present if several other games (nothing new here), but two heavily armed PVPs would run the same speed, not that speed would matter to a lumbering demolition commando. A slow commando would give the simple spearman an agility advantage. Of course in real life you would never carry a spear into 20th century warefare.
Just some thoughts.

I like the idea of a visible backpack, but not that it grows in size and puts a target on you. People just wouldn't use them if that was the case. Just wearing one would be enough to show people you might be carrying good stuff.
I've thought about carrying capacity before, and it would be interesting if clothing and bags gave you more. I would like to try playing where as a naked you could only carry 4 or 5 things, and would be required to get clothes or bags to carry more. It could make the game awful, but who knows, that's what alpha is for!
Reading your post made me think of this:
instead of players putting all their wood and stone into chests players would instead put their stacks of a single resource into barrels. This makes it more apparent how many resources the player has and adds some visual interest to interiors. These would also be more space efficient than chests/storage boxes
Currently when you open your inventory, you'll see at the top of the window a meter saying something like 65kg/100kg. This is basically the precursor to the weight system. Their plan is to make it so items have weight and you can't carry more than you're capable of. This idea was mentioned a LONG time ago, so my assumption is it's been put on the shelf so that more important gameplay features (BPs, radtowns, etc.) could be added. I do agree that we need this system eventually.
It would be cool to see barrels, chests, stackable crates, etc just to add variety.
I know they eventually planned on adding a weight system. I wonder if something like a backpack would let you carry more?
Actually i don't like idea that backpack will grow itself.. If there could be different sized backpacks somewhere in the world. Like if you find it, you could wear it. It's visible for others and make inventory size bigger..
