If you were king, what would the weapons and combat system be like?

Lets get some different viewpoints in one place without it turning into an bitch fight please.
What do you think is the key issue, if any, with the weapons and combat?
What changes to the game should there be to replace or change the current weapons systems?
Does said change fit the game style as you see it?
Is it realistic for a post apocalyptic world?
What are some neat novelty ideas in regards to weapons? (I.E. Flare Guns, Weapon-camos ext.)

Here's my take
I think the key issue with the weapons/combat is that the military weapons are impossibly common and that the alternative to them is virtually non-existent.
The fix for me is pretty simple, add a greater degree of weapon progression. There are so so so many guns in the world that aren't military grade, yet the game (ATM) is missing them entirely. No hunting rifles or shotguns, no civilian Ar-15's, even the ridiculously common .22 is missing.
More than civilian weapons, we all know the game needs more improvised weapons. From the first time I laid eyes on the pipe-shotty, I've had a major hard on for improvised and simple weapons that I just can't get to go away. Adding everything from simple spears to boom-sticks to complex improvised machine guns would add so much to the game, especially if the blueprints were common and only craftable. This (to me) is certainly where needs to go.
Also, #flaregun4life.
What I would like to see - and I'm probably alone at this - would be combat that is alot more punishing and slower paced. Contemplating whether or not to engage in combat with someone should be something you actually put some thought into instead of just running around randomly gunning down everyone you see. I'm not sure exactly how this would be implemented, perhaps if we got maps in this game then if you opened fire you would light up as a dot on the map? ... then again I'm not really for the idea of implementing maps in the game either... :tinfoil: Using your guns should be more of a plan-C if both your plan A and B failed.
I also agree about the whole military weapons thing, except I think they should be fully removed and replaced with "DIY weapons". If military weapons were to be in the game id like for them to be lootable only and non researchable. Now, with handmade weapons obviously comes the malfunctioning of weapons such as jamming and misfire - I also think this would serve to make you more hesitant when it comes to using your firearm. - now I know alot of people would bitch about this saying they dont wanna rely on the randomness of weapons malfunctioning, well guess what if you were the make your own gun chances are pretty big that it would malfunction every now and then... Rust (the game that I am now king of) isnt an FPS, its a survival simulator where you will just have to accept the randomness of the world no matter how skilled you are at nailing those headshots.
I agree in that there should be more improvised weapons, spears, old rusty muskets, throwables possibly (knives, hatchets). I also agree that the combat system is not very punishing after playing the game for a few hours a gun is not very hard to come by. The idea of having to craft magazines and load them at home bullet by bullet is in my opinion amazing.
I think explosives should be less geared around crafting c4 and more aimed at home made ghetto rigged explosives. Would absolutely love to see more trap systems in game, I know they are working on a bear trap, but i would love to see things like trip wires and trap doors.
I might be the only one here, but i feel like there should be some basic form of tripod system. Honestly coming from an avid hunter, just putting two sticks together in a y shape will help improve accuracy over distances. There should be some punishment for aiming a gun for too long of a period of time. If we are searching for realism think about holding up a rifle, even something relatively light like a pistol will wear out the arms and decrease accuracy if held in a shooting position for an extended period of time.
Finally, please for the love of god let me retrieve an arrow every once in a while.
Considering the game has a huge thing for tactics I think a Rainbow Six Combat manuver system would be good. You know-- Taking cover behind crap, dashing from one to the other, etc.
I think the current combat system is solid at its core, it just needs more weapons and a sense of progression. Also needs more epic special weapons like grenade bow, flare gun, throwing spears, LMGs that can be deployed on a tripod to defend your base etc
Nice thread. I always like a fun read.
Just my idea, for weapons i would like to go back to basics.. We have some military hardware and that's great but there is a big jump from wooden bows to full metal guns. We need add simple things like a stick, (bare with me it sounds boring) but imagine a naked running around beating each other with sticks. beating animals with sticks its a noob weapon however it would add an extra tier. When you craft/find a crafting knife you can sharpen the edge of this stick to make a spear.. Possibly then thin the spear to make javelins or use them as ornaments (i.e wolfs/player head on a spike).
I think we need more wooden tier sort of items. so we are not going from stone hatchet to p250 to bolt action in less than 4 hours.
Traps should be a thing too. I would add pitfall traps with 5 handcraft spears (explained earlier) or make a bait cage out of 16 sticks, by bait cage i mean place a bit of food/bait inside catch yourself an animal or human.. The list could go on..
I want to outsmart the kevlar grunts with traps and wit.. Make them think twice about returning or C4'ing my booby trapped shack..
No modern guns and ammo.
I would see the use of bows, crossbows, spears, pikes, swords, clubs, mace, daggers, etc.
It would be amazing fun...
it needs to be like the far cry 3 single player with the multiplayer side of rust
and far cry 3 plants / drugs effects might be fun in here too, allowing enhanced senses without cheats or blurred vision while hanging out with friends xD
The option to block/parry attacks with the handle of your axe/pickaxe might be cool, timing your blocks correctly and balancing it with your attack times, like in a lot of the combat mods in Skyrim. Also, more vicious/brutal attacking, the option to tackle people, beat them with your rock while they're down, some way to parry the tackle/stop the consecutive rock hits once you're down, etc. Good balance, more strategy, more brutality. I want to feel like I'm in a heated fight where every hit counts instead of playing the passthroughtheotherplayer game back and forth while timing rock swings and running away for a few seconds to use a bandage.
As far as guns go, less mp5 more hand made smg, bolt action can stay, m4's gotta go. No more modern shotty, improve the pipe shotty. Or just add more hand-made weapons. I'm not a huge fan of the modern weapons, but to each their own.

Also flaregun yes, and flare traps, saw it in another thread, trip wire tied to some flares so if you're home and people are trespassing at night, flares pop off and float down slowly, you can see them clearly.
atombomb
Slingshots, bows, spears.... maybe the most advanced would be cross bow. However, nothing really kills on the spot in 1 hit. Rather than killing on the spot, every hit does force inventory to drop. Items should be maybe categorized by importance, and if a sling shot hits you maybe you drop a can of beans as you run or fight back. If an arrow hits you, you drop arrows or a blueprint from your own inventory. You don't have to die to lose things, but if you do die, yes, you lose everything.
