My idea is that instead of having different types of walls (metal, wood, rocks) you could have only one wall with a customizable amount of materials.
let's suppose that a wood wall costs 200 wood and a metal wall costs 100 metal.
Then you can build a wall with 100 wood and 50 metal. the wall's properties would be a combination of the two.
You can then upgrade the wall to a full metal one by adding metal, the wood is wasted.
From the previous example, you can upgrade it to a full metal wall by adding 50 metal, you lose the 100 wood you had initially used to build the wall.
When the wall gets hit, you lose a small percentage of the materials used.
To repair it, you use the hammer. each hammer hit adds an amount of material linked to the amount of materials missing.
Example, you have a wall made by 100 wood and 50 metal.
you hit it with a pickaxe. each pickaxe hit removes 5 wood and 1 metal. after 10 hits your wall has 50 wood and 40 metal.
you then repair it with the hammer, each hit adds 25 wood and 5 of metal. you repair it completely in 2 hits.
Optionally you can change the wall type before repairing it, so you don't waste materials.
The type of materials you can add to a wall depends on what you learned via blueprints or whatever.
the same applies to the other building parts, if a part cannot be built with rocks, that option will simply be unavailable while building that part.
