Hey all,
I've been playing Rust for several months now on a relatively decent laptop but the FPS spikes and drops are making it basically unplayable. The game will run fine regardless of graphic settings (I do have all of the graphics set on minimum just in case) however every 2-10 minutes the FPS drops to 2-4fps for 10-15 seconds and then goes back to normal. And this happens over and over again to the point where it can actually overheat the laptop and make it crash. No other game has this effect on the laptop and I've tried all the fixes I can think of. If anyone has any ideas do let me know as Rust is one of my favourite games but this is making it completely impossible to play. I've tried using all the commands to turn additional graphics settings off, tweaking options in the graphics card settings to make sure it's running it properly, even tried downloading Razer Game Booster but I'm now out of ideas. The specs of the laptop are:
Operating System
Windows 8.1 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i7 @ 2.20GHz 69 °C
Haswell 22nm Technology
RAM
16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (11-11-11-28)
Motherboard
Acer VA70_HW (U3E1) 73 °C
Graphics
Generic PnP Monitor (1920x1080@60Hz)
Intel HD Graphics 4600 (Acer Incorporated [ALI])
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M (Acer Incorporated [ALI]) 62 °C
Storage
931GB TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100 (SATA) 43 °C
Optical Drives
PIONEER BD-RW BDRTD03RT
DTSOFT Virtual CdRom Device

CPU is kinda weak and your overall temperature seems quite high.
If it goes very high, it throttles itself a bit lower, thats why your fps decrease.
All you can do, is open your shitty Laptop and add new coolpaste to you GPU & CPU.
After this you can additionally use a big fan into the direction of the craptop.
Hope that fixes your problem. If not: Get a Computer.

Got similar specs (same GPU, similar CPU..), and I can run a lot of games smoothly, including BF4 and BFH on medium-high (45-50 fps). But I can't run Rust at more than 30fps (20 in the forest biome) on fast settings.
tik, upgrading your specs would defo increase your performance and reduce lag spikes. But so will optimization. Unity is lighter than Frostbite, it's just not optimized.
Wait for the update, they supposedly worked a lot on performance issues lately
BF games can not be compared to open world sandbox games.
BF got static small maps, Rust got massive randomly generated maps.
