What if you could obtain seeds and grow your own crops for food, medicine, crafting, etc.? Maybe sort of like how it works in Minecraft? I think that would be pretty cool.
It'd be nice but that would be turning the game towards Minecraft.. alot more.. and what Rust wants is originality.

its not like minecraft invented frarming
i like this idea :) because right now the only source of food is, animals and zombies itd be nice if we also added a little bit more to the hunting aspect
its not like minecraft invented frarming
the point is not trying to rely the game in any aspects Minecraft counts on, but this doesn't mean it can't be added...
I like the idea, I think we should be able to farm pigs, chickens and rabbits also, I figured it was probably going to be like that anyway though.

That would be really cool too. The only issue I see with this entire idea is that given the crops and animals you raise would probably take several day and night cycles to mature, they would be very prone to raiding and it would be hard to ever get something out of them. I'm sure players would find creative ways to get around this though. :P

Like surrounding their farms with various traps? Raid my pigs will you? Suck on tripwire grenades! =D
maybe just berries on bushes or something
maybe just berries on bushes or something
Yeah I agree with this, it's better to have a "snooze you lose" mentality when foraging rather than "haha I stole your crops!" in my opinion. You could scavenge for berries, mushrooms, apples on trees or other fruits, that would be really cool.
Well we already have a "haha I raided your base" mentality going on don't we? :v:

Fair enough. I still think foraging rather than growing is more the focus, is all.
It would be awesome if when farming you also had to worry about predators. Wolves and zombies might try to eat your chickens. If a zombie gets to your chickens you have to kill off the infected chickens or risk having your entire livestock turned into mutants.

Well, we could have both. Maybe there could be berries and other edible plants as well in the wild, and possibly medicinal plants we could use for crafting or something.

I LOVE THIS IDEA. YOU DESERVE A MEDAL.
Why not seeing plants around and being able to pick up the fruits, herbs, and so on to eat or combine them to create something new. For example a poisonous herb + arrow = poison arrow which will do dmg of poison + bleeding on a character.(?)

because anything that minecraft already did makes it illegal to do it too.
crafting
building
survival
pvp
slaughter of animals
cutting down trees
mining rocks
farming
i guess you really want this game to be 'penis simulator 2013'

Lul'd..
Farming is such a bad idea. One, farming takes up a LOT of space and so it would be limited to ONLY groups that could setup large complexes and not individuals. Second, if it had animals, even if there were traps, people would likely just shoot your animals which is just MORE grieving that the game doesn't need.

I disagree. Farming doesn't take up a lot of space, you just allocate a small, fenced-in area (should it be implemented) dedicated solely to growing food. This could open up a new method of gameplay such as community gardens or having a clan protect their crops from invaders. As for animals, who is to say I can't build a small house and herd my animals inside so people cannot pick them off? Think of it like a real farm, a farmer lets their animals out to graze, then puts them inside, typically. If they were to leave them outside 24/7 wild animals would get to them.

Few farm animals aren't left outside (except during winter). Chickens live in coupes but that's more of to make egg collection easier. Pigs, goats, cows, horses, etc., are left outside in pens.
Gardens, I'm not sure of but even something small like a courtyard takes a lot of space to be honest because you have to surround it with a fairly large building. If they make fences (so you aren't using real walls), they'd most likely be destructible by a hatchet and be too easy to raid. Big groups shouldn't have a problem making one but solo players and small groups would probably have a much harder time making and maintaining one.
From a balancing standpoint, wildlife and food from scavenging seems the easiest. Just to be honest, food wasn't actually something I ever had trouble getting. Animals give PLENTY of uncooked food. I normally would have like 80-200 cooked chicken sitting around at any given time (except RIGHT when I start). I ended up stop going after animals because I was getting plenty of food from rad town scavenging.

Apologies, I was kind of grasping at straws, admittedly I don't really know much about farming, just went with my intuition.
I know this is totally side note but since were on the discussion of cool things to add what would yall think about adding safes as a new storage great with a code panel too. so the only way someone could get into it is if they had c4 or some sort of sticky bomb or if they added like a hacking tool that is hard to obtain

I'd imagine that in Rust the farming would only be really small scale. Since timescales are faster (making a wooden foundation for a building takes seconds while in real life it would take hours or more), I'd guess that your plants would grow faster and be able to be harvested more frequently. And of course, food plants wouldn't be the only thing you'd be able to grow. Maybe you could grow medicinal herbs to help with things such as radiation and cold? As well as making poison as Mateaus mentioned?
To address the issue of raiding, maybe we'd be able to build wooden garden boxes that we could place on the roofs of our houses. This would be a lot more difficult to raid from than a field planted with your crops. You can grow a lot of stuff in garden boxes in real life, and I think this would be a great way to do it in Rust.

If you are in a post apocalyptic world, I doubt you have potting soil and Nutri-grow lying around to make a roof garden.
Why do you all people think in such narrow, this is cool, kind of way? Think of it in gameplay terms. In EVE online, if you want to build a Titan, you have to mine insane amounts of resources and then hold onto a piece of space for several months uninterupted and then would your superweapon be built.
The same principle should applay here: you want a superweapon? (Poisonus darts, longwood for a sniper-rifle) Make a garden and guard it for 3 days. Animals and zombies attack it, as do players. And it blody glows in the night (radiation) so everyone can see it.

Well there is something called homemade compost....
Well since we already have an attack-oriented way to gain food, why not get farming which is more defense-oriented as it'll rely on you guarding it?
The biggest advantage will be gained by the big clans, as they'll have the manpower to defend their farm and also make sure they've got enough food for their men, while the smaller player can put a really small farm to gain bits and pieces out from by placing it in unused building space.
Farms would require proper foundation and after that require vast amounts of water to stop it from withering. Having different kinds of farms will maybe help in picking what you need:
-Fast but does not give much food? ( a few ingame days )
-Slow but gives a lot of food? ( a few irl days )
Slow and needs a lot of water = Most food-gain as it reuires you to water every ingame day or so
Slow and seldom requires water = Doesn't give much as you can just water them once per irl day.
I think this will be perfect.
I already suggested farming,in a more complex topic.People hated it,tho.

Or:
Bottle/flask - Think of a way to craft it yourself, just setting an example here.
Flask of poison - 20 poison herbs, 20 ammo, doesn't matter what type. It can make poisoned shotgun bullets, 9mm bullets, etc..
Something that I'm looking for is a stabbing weapon, it can even be a stick, I just want to skewer naked people. Maybe you can spawn with a branch or something, and later on you can craft stuff like spears?
