• Building, Collecting-Now Useless

The transformation to legacy with pretty graphics is just about complete. Next update, building health regen is removed. That means that there is no reason to build, upgrade, collect or anything else since the faction that needs raiding and action has won. Now all you will need is a couple of guys (maybe even 1) with hatchets, and poof, everything you enjoyed building and working for is gone. Rust will now be lather, rinse, repeat again. I think I am going to just give in and go with it. Don't build, don't collect, just get blueprints for what I need to KOS, and destroy. If someone chases me, go into deep water and suicide. When I loot, dump it in the water so no one else gets it. Then suicide when I am done playing for the night. Better yet, I'll be one of those lovely beach combers that just sit there and kill new spawns to get a reaction. Before anyone says "try PVE", the reason I play PVP is so I could protect the things I built or collected, now, I cannot. As soon as I log out, someone will use the third person no collider bug(Still not fixed BTW) to see into my house, then hack easily through my walls and take it, kill me, and my sleeping bag. What next, the griefers win too? They will once again be able to just build you in rather than spending the time to destroy? It seems they are so busy trying to accommodate the type that must win something that they are destroying any type of defensible home building, and not fixing bugs. Maybe it is time for those of us who wish to play a survival game to move on? I wish there were a polite way to say that I feel Facepunch is caving in to people who will destroy the game. The (my opinion) trolls, the aggressive #winning asshats who say generic things like "u mad bru" and "rekt", the type of person that loves to cause strife and laughs about it. I love this game, but I am starting to be feel discouraged. Mods, please lock this. I needed a place to vent, and do not wish to start some heated argument. If a good discussion can be started, so be it.
We don't even know the exact mechanics yet. I usually argue for a 24 hour wait time after the change before complaining. I won't even comment of what I think about complaining days in advance. Let's see how this rolls out before discussing it at all. I have the same fears you have, but let's be patient.
I really don't see how this changes much. The result is the same -- if you don't want to be easily raided, build on a rock or in the water. If you build on the ground, you will get raided -- it's not a matter of 'if', it's a matter of 'when'.
rustafied.com is already all over it, getting ready to post demolition numbers and so forth. It is a done deal, and no mechanics involved. I agree, it is now a matter of when, but WHEN you get raided, wouldn't it be nice to be protected a bit?
I hear you y0, and I feel you are commenting on the sense of direction today. Tomorrow may bring another direction. In the mean time, go with the flow and start spearing the hell out of everything that moves. Become a nomadic fighting machine. If the wipe doesn't kill your stash, the raiders will. It will always be a challenge to outwit the witless.
It will always be a challenge to outwit the witless.
That doesn't speak highly of your own wit.
That doesn't speak highly of your own wit.
Agreed, but I am not claiming to be full of wit as I run around spearing.
This is a good thing. If you do some research, you will see more traps/home protection are planned to be implemented in the game. EDIT: This is what I was talking about. https://trello.com/b/DBOhTfQm/rust-concept I don't know if it's 100% or not. I hope it will be added into the game.
However, the traps are also easily disarmed and destroyed. There was talk of siege weapons a while back. Groups would need to find the rare blueprint, build up to it at great cost, then start raiding which would be a team effort. A person to carry the siege machine or powder keg, and others to protect. A few guys with hatchets should not be able to get through a wall so easily. Traps should not be able to be disarmed and destroyed so easily. The game needs raiders, however the raiders should need to work hard to be able to raid, and it should not always be successful. I have played 3am nights when I wasn't working and watched groups of 4 run around destroying and looting house after house on a server. Even in legacy folks had to work a bit to get to a point where they could raid a base. Now all it takes is a hatchet. Maybe if there was more per map. Right now you can run for quite a while without wolves, bears, or any threats (if you get off the beach), crowd the map up more. More threats, more cover...?
It's possible it could go this way. At this point in time we really don't know. The game is still in development. Don't let things like this deter you.
Just in, explosives are back. Check rustafied.com. I am logging into my dev server now, but they look just like legacy explosives and work the same way. Legacy, with pretty graphics.

Nothing of this balance is final, people. People demanded garry make experimental more like legacy, and I suspect the population numbers were slanted hard enough to the legacy side that it's been a compelling argument for the short term. That doesn't mean this is what Rust will be forever. garry's not a pushover.
Shows up private for me too.
Should be sorted now :)
Minecraft is a great option for you PvE builders. Srs.
lol, yea not to worried about a naked or a guy with a hatchet breaking down one wall... if you build a house with just a few layers of stone walls thats a lot of time to break one wall down.
Man, the tears of OP are so salty. What else did you expect then? A well balanced system on the fly? The changes probably will be on main monday. That's almost a week of work and implementing stuff. I don't understand why people are panicking so fast. This is (pre-)alpha and you're testing the game. Give it some time like ALWAYS and stop saying things like: "I wish there were a polite way to say that I feel Facepunch is caving in to people who will destroy the game." This is a very childish response in my opinion and is really no better than a "How to fix the new rust" thread which we all laugh about.
It takes OVER AN HOUR(80+ min) to break a stone wall with a ROCK on dev servers. Experiments with hatches to come.
i will say that i think the thompson damage is a bit op when it comes to wall panels. most bullets would ricochet off a wall like that, either injuring the person shooting or just not penetrating effectively enough to break the wall. it would kind of be like firing arrows at a wall, it's not really going to do anything:) otherwise, it's just a matter of balancing out the health/damage. and that can't be done properly until the regen is gone.

If a good discussion can be started, so be it.
You've heard the, "it's alpha," shpiel before, so I won't waste it on you... But you know Rust is still in alpha, right? That most of your qualms will be addressed and balanced in time, and that right now we're looking at concepts that are in constant flux due to testing and other factors? You weren't feeling discouraged when you made this thread -- you were feeling that deep, visceral need that a child has for attention.
That means that there is no reason to build, upgrade, collect or anything else since the faction that needs raiding and action has won.
It's tough to have a reasonable conversation about offense/defense balance with someone who thinks people who engage in two of the only four general activities the game of Rust has ever featured from its inception are some selfish vocal minority clamoring to get their way, someone who has made it clear they want a game where raiding is rendered functionally useless except maybe for server Events. I don't enjoy mindless childish aggression, I usually don't practice it even in games... but how do you "destroy the game" by doing exactly what made the game popular in the first place? As the cheapest and quickest option, wood should be vulnerable to melee ... but not that vulnerable. Stone and metal should require large amounts of multiple types of resources, and the payoff is very high resistance to melee. Enter explosives. It's all about balance. If the difficulty of obtaining explosives or explosive components walks a fine line with the cost of resources for putting up upgraded defenses, then building and raiding become two sides of a tactical chess match. And aside from sightseeing, random deathmatch PVP and playing the game like it's a Creative architecture server... what other hidden activities and sources of interaction are we all missing out on?
A few guys with hatchets should not be able to get through a wall so easily.
Two words. Item Durability.
Rust has potential to be a really immersive survival game. I'm kind in the same boat as OP, i have a short amount of success during one update wipe cycle then if i dont establish a home the day the server wipes, its usually just a huge naked killing gauntlet at spawn. people speed building bases under airdrops, thats complete BS, that ruined my otherwise annoying game of 20+ deaths in 40mins of played time. fair enough if they brought multiple people to take the airdrop by force, but making a 10 story high tower within 20 seconds is just a game breaker. there should be a structural penalty for building on a block or floor thats still constructing
The OP y0himba has a point, I don't know why everyone is so quite to dismiss it. Time taken to build a "secure" base, (with 2 layers of stone walls, 3 floors, no stairs, and tool cupboard, sleeping bag, everything on the 3rd floor) = 1 day. Time taken for raiders to tear the whole thing down = 1 hour. With that sort of "un-balance", why is anyone going to invest the time required for building, when raiders can undo all your work in a fraction of the time?
I can agree that this could be frustrating, but I have to echo what's been said many times before; this is an alpha version of the game. Yes, it's playable. But it's not what the game is or will be. Balance to the game play will come with time. Right now, these are issues. At some point down the road, they won't be any more. We just have to be patient and let the dev team do their thing.
