• Remove voice icons so you cannot see who it is.

Legacy had this. I found it to be better as you couldn't see who it was from miles away and had to check via nametags. This opened up some funny things like faking to be another player and making creepy noises play through the mic. The biggest issue is that the speech icon is visible from the edge of your draw distance. What do you guys think?
to me it makes more sense to have the icon above the head of the player themselves rather than in the hud. even if it were a little mic symbol that lights up when they talk. from that you can figure out who is talking if you can see them, and can't if you cannot see them.

I like having the voice avatar, but not the way it is now. An icon on top of a speaker's head would be far more valuable than the current system.
I like it the way it is. My icon is never flashing on other people's screens because i don't inflict my annoying breathing on the world via free-talk mode.

The idea behind his question is, that the removing of the Icon + Playername will result in a much more sneaky way of gameplay, because u can now talk to somebody inside his base (or from inside to outside) without knowing who he or you is.

It's stupid and too easy to grief with.
Can't you just turn those off in the options?
I think removing voice icons is a great idea because it is quite realistic and I think it will make being an impressionist a way of raiding.

So if u have a line of sight to somebody, its totally fine, nearly the same as it was befor. Atm it's a bit strange to know which ppl are talking to each other from 1000 drawunits away.

Troll builds armored shack right outside your building radius, and starts blasting loud nonstop Nazi propaganda. You get annoyed and start breaking in to the shack. Troll hears this and changes his name before you break in, making you look for a useless name. Then he can come right back and start the process all over with a new armored shack. All because you thought it was silly that you can see the names of players talking. Too. Easy. To abuse.
Completely agree. there have been a lot of times when I've been running past somewhere and heard nothing - but the speaking icon pops up. It is pretty awesome having "spidey sense", but, well, it is a superpower. Slightly OP.

In chat, however, that is not the case. For nametags and voice, it is. As for micspamming, what exactly does the icon do to prevent that? Absolutely nothing. If you got a mic spammer, you notify an admin privately, they will likely teleport to you and warn or ban the spammer. Thus, I really do not see why or how the icon has an effect on mic spam. My argument is that it is irrealistic. As someone else mentioned: Newmen are not spidermen. They do not have spidey senses, and the proposed icon above the player (or next to the nametag) was a good compromise. TL;DR: Troll can do that even now, so I do not see where your example backs up your argument. PS: People end up totally ignoring voice chat for ts/vent/mumble as it gives away not only your estimated distance , but your identity without even a line of sight.
If you think you can remove trolling from this game, think again. Sometimes before the avatars I would talk with people I was raiding, bow I wont do it unless I know theyve seen my name. I think having an avatar hover over a talking players head would be better than what we have Trolls are usually looking for attention, not anonymity

Why not go with the smarter option of just tuning the VOIP to not show the icon if you can't hear them? Clearly the issue you all have with it currently is that you see the icon before the voice, but that's because the VOIP is still fucked. The reason you want the name to be seen is because it gives YOU, the PLAYER, the power to mute the troll.

I don't think the concept of mic spam applies in Rust. In a game such as Counter-Strike, everyone on the server is forced to hear mic spam, so it makes sense to have systems in place to prevent it. In Rust, trolling other players is part of the fun of the game. If I can totally obliterate your base with c4, why can't I sit outside and blast music? I'd hardly call that abuse. You have so many options to deal with such a person, such as: 1. Do your best to bear the annoyance and continue playing, 2. mute your sound and continue playing, 3. go out of your base and kill him, 4. leave your base and go gather resources, etc, 5. stop playing the game for a while. I'm sure others can think of more options. If someone was so committed to annoying me that he was willing to stand afk mic spamming, I would never dream of bothering an admin to mute him. Edit: Although, re-reading your example of Nazi propaganda did make me realize that I had overlooked one thing: hate speech. Nevertheless, if disabling the speech icons makes it easier for people to get away with hate speech, so be it. If they do it enough, someone will catch them. In other words, the devs shouldn't implement systems that cater to the worst offenders.
Back in Legacy: Guy in the House: Joey is it you Sulli: yeah of course. Guy in the House: *Opens the door* *dies* Guy in the House: You are not Joey right. Sulli: Kinda and this happend far often :D
