Hello, i was thinking about being able to dig underground but then was also thinking about the cons.. People being able to make underground bases and just hoard items so i was wondering how you could counter people being invisible little nimwits but still be able to dig/make houses underground.. It opens so much more creativity into the game.
Not only does it make creativity it brings cave rats to the game, people will start going underground, what's the point of staying up there if its much safer down there?? The server would be "empty"
Right but i also asked how to counter that. Maybe if you stay underground for too long it gives off an exact location on a map or something.

An idea of suffocating would be better.
An idea of suffocating would be better.
Yeah thats a good idea, being underground for too long could make you suffocate. Or the ground could collapse trapping you aswell if you dig in the wrong spot.
It was suggested a while back, not many people really like it. If you want to tunnel go play minecraft.
It would probably not work in this game engine
It would probably not work in this game engine
It can, I posed the idea a long time ago, and someone gave a link to a unity script. It will work it is just not a good idea to have in rust.

Can i have a source of that?, would really like to see, not that i dont belive you but would be nice

Not right now as I am on my phone, FP is absolute shit when it comes to that. I have finals today at university, but when I get home I'll be sure to link you, just keep lurking here.
If we do have underground mining and stuff, we could at least make it realistic. What should be added with that is support beams to prevent tunnels collapsing. Also, we need air pumps to keep people from suffocating. Lastly, to make things interesting, add the ability to destroy support beams, that way you can effectively kill players when they are in there. :D

Yeah, a lot of balancing and forethought needs to go into this idea. I will admit, however, that it would make infiltrations quite interesting, tunneling under.

That will not work with the unity3d engine and the way the game is currently designed.

It would work actually, but that doesnt mean it should go in.
I'd be up to try this.

On infiltrations, it would be a great idea. If this gets balanced correctly, this feature will work just fine in the game really. I know that we don't want this to be like Minecraft, but it doesn't have to be if we add more and more realism. The more dangers there are to mining underground, the less likely players will be inclined to do it and the less Rust will look like Minecraft.
Edit: Also, if the wastelands above ground end up getting more rad zones added, underground living will become a more viable option.
this is rust. Not minecraft. :suicide:
It wouldn't work, the engine isn't voxel based so you're not going to be able to do it. Source: 3 years doing low-level graphical programming.
Whats 7T2D ? Cause that game looks pretty decent and has destroyable ground
this is rust. Not minecraft. :suicide:
Yes, but we can't avoid placing in features that other games have. Otherwise, we won't have any...no, if we implement it with a different idea in mind like what I had above, It would not be like Minecraft. The image would be much different compared to most games.
It would work actually, but that doesnt mean it should go in.
No it would not. The map is not a voxel terrain. It's a mesh terrain.
Do I look like a gopher?
Do I look like a gopher?
No.
No it would not. The map is not a voxel terrain. It's a mesh terrain.
You can dig directly down on a mesh terrain, if you go too far its gonna look stretched though, but the resolution of the terrain is probably so small that its just gonna look shit anyways.

Like I said, someone posted a demo of Unity 3d with a "digging" functionality. I will post it once I drive home from university.
not possible it has been suggested before and the dev said it wasn't possible. If i recall correctly the only way for it to be possible is to have like a trap door that would teleport you to another location so you could dig like a basement or whatever, but not full on terrain modification.
Found the post:
Well, the easiest way to overcome the terrain issues if we really wanted to would be building a deployable that was like an underground entrance. If you pressed 'e' on it and you had a quick fade to black and then appeared on a ladder going down. Internally it would be teleporting you to a little instance under the ground where you could 'dig' to create 'rooms'
Not likely to happen any time soon if ever, though.
I think that too many people would just camp under ground. But maybe if there was like a suffocation thing and tunnel collapsing thing.
don't sass me boy, you can't just drag a magical unity script in and expect this stuff to work.
I can't find the post anyways, but I am certain I saw it. I don'treally know the inner workings, but it basically was removing portions of terrain on click. Could have been a terrain editor but in any case, it was a demo and it looked like that.

7T2D is voxel based ;)

Would need a good amount of work to look proper, but it is possible. All of this is for naught, if that is not the direction that Facepunch wants to take with their game.
While I think it could be interesting. I think a more fun alternative would be to have more complex base parts, and thus more complex designs. But the more complexity added, just makes it easier for bugs to creep in, and allow exploiters ruin an otherwise fun game.

I might be wrong but I don't think this is a real-time terrain editor, only a editor for the main map.
