I have noticed that this was tried once and i also noticed that the site is shut down.
I don't know why this happened, but when reading forums i have seen this come up plenty of times and i am willing to give it a shot.
So this is how it's going to work. I will be looking for help in getting together some staff. Because if this gets as big as i would like, well, i will need help. I have about 3 including me right now that will help.
This is going to be one of those 'trial and error' ways.
Obviously we will have some strict guidelines to submitted hackers and to approving a hacker to have added to ban list. These guidelines may have to be edited and changed a bit. But lets hope not to much and we get the hackers off the game. Vac and cheatpunch will do their thing and us as a community will only help add to it.
Eventually we will have a download for the ban list, but first step is to get players added to it.
So if you're interested in helping, please add me to steam P+Intrepid.
I understand that people can change names and make it look like someone is hacking, but hey, that's why we will have guidelines to banning. :)
The website that we are going to use is http://puissantgamers.com/ (For now)
It is a gaming clan website, so i know its a dumb idea. But like i said, i have seen others try this and fail. So if this grows like i hope, i will get a site just dedicated to this.
So for more information or even to start submitting hackers please check out the site.
Also, if you want to hate on this topic that's fine. But remember i am just trying to make the game more enjoyable by removing more hackers from your servers.
Please share your thoughts and ideas though. Have a great day and lets eventually make it hack free.
There's a big glaring problem with something like this: Anyone who has a grudge with someone else can add their SteamID to the list, then someone who hasn't done anything wrong gets screwed over and banned from a bunch of servers.
There's no real proof of anything. Videos and screenshots just show the Steam name, which is not unique and not tied to any specific SteamID, so those are not factual evidence.

I should add that when this idea popped up in the past I originally supported it... But there's just too many obvious ways to exploit something like this.

Ok but let me know what you think about this. All videos will have to have video of steam profile included or we will not accept. and link to their profile will be submitted when they submit video.
You're right though. Screenshots will be the hard one.

screenshots can easily be faked. Videos that does not directly link to someone profile is the way to go. Even though there are still may ways to exploit. This could work on a monitored banlist but would require a lot of work. Especialy the part where you would have to verify tons and tons of videos and reports.

This is why i am looking for help. I am just tired of hackers like everyone else. I mean since i posted this, i banned 3 players for speed hacking in my server. Its getting crazy and i am willing to put in time and i hope others are as well.
So everyone has to have a video (which many computers can't handle screen capturing and playing Rust at the same time...) that has:
- The player hacking and you must see their name
- Then show the user opening the Steam overlay, finding the hacker in the players list and then going to their profile
- Then getting the SteamID 64 to prove that it is actually that person...
That's a ridiculous number of steps to have in one video just to ban one person.
[editline]24th April 2014[/editline]
Not to mention that someone then has to go through each video and watch each and every one of them to make sure that someone isn't just trying to set someone up.
Plus, if someone is using the impersonation function to impersonate someone live on the server, it'd be easy enough to use simple editing tricks to obscure the fact that the video shows the hacking player (with someone else's name) and then opens up the innocent impersonated person's profile and displays the innocent's Steam ID, and not the hacker's.
Now someone's being submitted to the banlist when they may not have even been aware that someone was impersonating them and hacking. Now they're banned for no reason.
GG.

Silver two steps with video...
First two you mentioned would work. Link to profile would should Steam ID 64.
But yeah some may not be able to record. But how many record now. A lot.
So if we can remove more hackers from servers why not.?
Ohh and i don't mind watching videos, or i wouldn't have started this.. but like i said, i hope to get more help...
Just my 2 cents, this kind of endeavour can work and has been working for years on other games.
Check out www.respectedadmins.net, it's a close circle of server admins that share and manage a public ban list. Submissions can only be done by the few members of that circle but the list itself is public for other admins to use as they see fit. I don't know who still is there and if they remember me, it's been years, but you can drop the name [666]Deicide, I was part of the admins back when it was created for Rainbow Six: RavenShield back in like 2003 or so.
There are strict rules to follow for submissions, including providing video or hack detection software logs, they'll want direct access to the server logs to avoid forgery, etc... They won't ban unless it's a 99.999% sure hit.. I was with them for 2-3 years and I don't remember a false positive during that time. They even had at some point custom cheat detection tools you could install on your servers to check for hacks that weren't caught by the in-game tools (punkbuster back then).
That said, I don't think they currently support Rust, but it would definitely be a good addition. If they don't want to support Rust, they can at least serve as an inspiration. I would definitely endorse such a project and would be willing to take part it in.
In fact, I think it's a great idea!
This could potentially work, as long as only server admins can submit claims, with proof, and even then the website will be closer to a "I think person X on my server is a hacker, maybe I should use this website as a reference in addition to on server sleuthing" kind of deal. If you allow everyone to post, you end up with (more) problems.
If you work really, really hard to get to know admins who want to help improve their communities, you could end up with a small group of relatively hacker free servers, almost a white list of good servers. though even if you do this right, but it will only ever be marginally useful to the Rust community as a whole because of the large amount of servers available, and the proliferation of hackers.
Overall, it's an ambitious idea with some glaring flaws, but it may be worth going ahead and seeing what good may come out of it.
With so many admins taking advantage of admin rights and banning players for raiding their bases I don't really think that only allowing admins to post up hacker info would make this any better.
I really dislike this idea. It's a witchhunt, and innocent people will suffer for it. I will not play on servers that use something like this.
I don't think this is a good idea. Just thinking of how much people in this very forum love to accuse anyone and everyone of hacking gives me a bad feeling.
As a server admin I can tell you global ban lists NEVER work and are a REALLY bad idea.
*Adds someone he hates to the list* good idea!
clearly you've never seen what happened in minecraft with mcbans
these things do not go or end well
As many posters pointed out, there's way too many false hackusations and too much documented admin abuse for any server administrator to simply trust blacklists.
*But*... a passive watch-list might be very beneficial. If someone's been banned a few times and been on several admins' radar, a server owned might be motivated to keep an eye on them... or perhaps might choose not to extend the same benefit of the doubt he/she would to an unknown player being accused of cheating.
Someone more familiar with the Rust server admin tools might be able to answer: is there a way to flag steam ID's so they alert online admins when logging in (watch list) as opposed to blocking them (ban list)?
While I like your idea and support your goals, it seems logistically impossible to ensure the players on the list are hackers.

This is a horrible idea. I remember back in the Battlefield 3 days there were all these fucking "anti-cheating" community faggots, making a bunch of shit sites and plugins that would automatically global ban people that had been banned from more than X amount of servers. I believe I went through 3 origin accounts based on shitty admins making shitty decitions. As for your shit anticheat, screenshot's and videos are so easily faked. I bet if I wanted to I could register another steam account, buy some shitty payhack, log onto the false account and film myself flying around under someone else's name. Please close this thread.

That's not a bad idea. A record of the player that admins could reference to try and corroborate their suspicions. That makes more sense than, "add to list ----> ban." Each new offense would simply go into that player's log and would serve as character evidence if an admin ever wanted to check into somebody.

Thats kind of what I was getting at too. This could be a useful cross reference if you suspect that someone on your server is hacking. You could visit the site and do a search based on usernames/steam id's or whatever, and it could bring up a page with pictures, videos, or even just testimonials/reports on said players conduct. This could never be the master banlist the op probably imagines it could be, but it could be a iseful tool
