UPDATE: Check my most recent post down below for newest info.
After this latest patch, I have had terrible FPS and much longer load spikes than normal. Before the patch I still got load spikes from buildings and large rock patches once in a while, but it wasn't nearly as bad. Now, I get at best 10-15 FPS and pretty much everything, even inventory navigation is much slower. I don't have the greatest PC specs but I'm assuming this is mostly just the game not being fully optimized yet, which I understand. I'm really hoping tho that there will be some patches to help with this soon cuz I can barely call the game playable right now. Lots of other people I talked to in servers were experiencing the same problems so I know it's not just me either.
Yes, confirmed. It looks like these FPS drops come and go with these updates, so I don't think we should be worried about this. Pretty sure they are aware of this situation and are going to solve it as soon as possible.

Mostly because I'm mad that I couldn't find a cave and want to play more but it isn't really worth it right now. I really hope this is fixed by tomorrow tho, I love this game like crazy and want to keep alpha testing.
Hi Thor-axe,
Would you mind providing a bit of info regarding your machine specs? Specifically CPU brand/model or number of available cores, GPU brand/model and VRAM.
Cheers
Dell XPS 630i
Intel Duo core E8400 @3GHz
Geforce Twin Frozr GTX 260 OC edition(currently not overlocking)[also I don't run the AfterBurner software that comes with it, as it conflicts with some of my games]
3Gigs of RAM right now
Windows 7 64bit
I realize all these spec are laughably bad right now, but my options for upgrading at this time are non-existent.
I run the game on Fastest @1440 x 900. I used to get decent performance as high as Simple or Pretty(?) and COULD run the game on higher but with lots of lag near buildings. Now, I get 10 frames if I'm looking at any kind of terrain whatsoever. I notice building textures lag me a bit more than rock/terrain textures, if thats any help. I honestly don't know what my frames were before the update, but I can* promise they were much better. Things felt smooth as long as I wasn't around lots of buildings/rock/trees.
i noticed this as well got a bit better now tho
this build seams a bit better #2014-08-20_20-11-31 getting 26-38fps
normally i get 35-40 fps as of about 13:00 GMT i got 9~ fps trees floating and lerp lines were broken only showing up every few seconds,
Normal lerp lines (me jumping about like a prick)

but today (did not get screenshot) the lerp lines looked more like morse code spasmodic and broken.
floating trees also trees in distance were flashing in and out of existence when walking towards them,

my specs are
athlon II X3 435 2.9 GHz (slightly overclocked but not with the 4th core open, core unstable)
8 GB @ 1066 (slightly overclocked)
Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 Ti 2GB
i run the game and the server from the same pc.
EDIT Run game @ fantastic 1080 by 720
Thanks a lot for the info guys. This is very helpful.
Forgot to ask: what Rust quality modes (startup dialog) are you guys running at?

I editted my previous post with that info to save space, which I guess make this one defeat that purpose :D
After the hotfix that was released, things actually got worse for me. I quit playing cuz I couldn't do much with the low frames, then came back about an hour or two later and it felt almost 2x as bad, frames went from bouncing between 10-15 to a consistent 10 at all times, unless I looked straight up, then I got 11
Thanks for the info.
You both have a very reasonable setups, imho. I'm sure that closer to stable Rust will perform well on your machines.

I have 100% faith in that, given this has happened in previous updates, granted to a lesser degree, and things turned out better eventually. Thank you for addressing this so quickly.
Can't wait till this is fixed...finally we get cloth so we can make sleeping bags and bows, but the game is unplayable. Argh! Not really mad, and I know it will get fixed, just feeling withdrawal symptoms.
+1..yesterday befor patch all was fine 40-80fps(place)with max settings..now i have 1 min loading and 10 fps on low.

I'm seeing a lot of stuff on twitter than makes me think they found a few issues. Getting my hopes up a little that we'll see a fix soon. These guys seem to talk things really quick.
[editline]21st August 2014[/editline]
Just did a quick test run after the performance updates I saw on Twitter. Things are definitely better. My frames are still on the low end (10-15, 15-20), but things don't feel nearly as laggy as they were. I can at least walk around and explore. It still drags enough that combat with another player would be mostly impossible. When I look straight up I get as high as 35 frames tho which felt really nice to have back. I'm hoping there's a few more things to find and fix cuz while I can play and build again, there's still some lag that's irritating. Thanks for the progress so far, though!
I can confirm that this issue started on 20 aug update as well. Used to get arround 120 fps on low but now i get arround 10 fps even when standing still.
Dont know if related or not but i only get the fps drops when i'm standing on a place where the textures are flickering or when there's some floating tree on my FOV.
and another problem for me..cpu 95%+ for rust wtf..and game freez every 30-60sec for 5+ sec..never happend befor patch Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2310 CPU @ 2.90GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.9GHz

This is down to the increased view distance. We're working on getting it less shit.

I always wondered whether game devs usually implement tricky algorithms for increased performance based on their own ideas or have access to a secret and well-hidden compendium for dirty game development tricks and black magic.
In the past I saw indie studios struggling with the shitty performance of their games and they were all like "Ta-dah! 45 fps on your SLI titans! That's absolute sufficient!".
You don't have to go through thousands of SIGGRAPH papers in order to manage some good performance, do you? Just wondering...
Anyways, I hope you guys will manage to solve the performance issues in the future
Do you actually plan to add the speedtree middleware?

Thank you for the visit, Jesus.
As soon as I see 'Rust - Update Queued' I'll be on to check how it works, then report back right away.
So I just played in another server today and see how things worked. What I found strange was that I was getting amazing frames in some parts of the map, and then terrible ones in others. There was no major difference in these areas to suggest what might be the issue. I actually got the worst frames near places with very little trees or buildings, but large hills.
