Totally okay with the concept of ladders... but ladders aren't Post-It Notes.

Title pretty much says it all.
The mechanic is being crudely and poorly implemented.
Let the griefing begin!
"I may not be able to barricade you in like in Legacy, but enjoy the multiple ladders across your windows/doorways. :)"
Can you really layer ladders like that though? I haven't tested it but it seems like you can only have 1-2 ladders per wall and ladders get destroyed with 3 hatchet hits. Doesn't seem to be too bad to me, but if they can layer them garry will of course patch it out.
Yeah, they can be layered pretty effectively.
I do find their stickiness odd. Might be better if they could only only be leaned up against something instead of just stuck on almost anywhere. This will be an interesting update!
if you can just put them in front of a door but they get destroyed in 2-3 hits I don't really see the issue, it's just like in legacy with the barricades where you used them to block someone's door for a short period of time so you can get their stuff while they try to break it
I think were all gonna be suprised whats gonna be the cost of one of those ladders im not sure tho most likely i wil be wrong, but if like one of those ladders costs like 1000 wood not for the realism but for freshspawns not spamming them everywhere. I would be very glad ( sorry for poor english and grammar hope you wil understand)
Ladders are fucking stupid. You will break the game bigtime with em.

Well lets replace them with trampolines then at least that will be so much more fun, just take 2 minutes to think about raiding someone by using a trampoline...go on dont be shy.

Actually no, 300x wood, same as spears or floor spikes. For me, (as a builder), this a a total game-changer. Not sure I'll bother to build after the next update, as the odds are too in favour of the raiders now. Putting your tool cupboard on a higher floor is no deterrent now, anybody can climb onto your roof whenever they want.
I guess there's no where safe to store your loot bewteen sessions. Just carry it on you until you die or log off, then start again. :-(

I get what you're trying to say, but while you're sitting there whacking away at them you're going to get your face blown off.

Personally, I'd like to see a human-sized slingshot. Dire consequences if you miscalculated the toss.
So how high can you go with the ladder?

I m a builder too but i will dont flame everywhere like you. When you are to stupid to build a house, then left Rust and play Tetris and dont troll here.

I think you're right but too bad you're a bit rude to neil.hillman. Ontopic, Rust isn't a building simulator. There are tons of ways to make a secure base. Maybe your base will not look as pretty because of tons of spike walls, plateaus etc. Now you actually have to THINK again about securing your base in a creative matter...
Everyone who is crying is someone who builds on a rock
Im always build bases ground level, 2-3 stories up and i dont have a clan. I usually last a week.
Just wall up, doors everywhere and use armoured walls.
Make it so they need 10 c4 to get too the loot

I don't mind attrib, I have a well established reputation as skilled builder on several of the top community servers. With over 1,700 hours in Rust, I think I have a pretty detailed understanding of the game mechanics, so when a noob with no reputation or experience tells me I don't know what I'm talking about, it's just funny...

well if you think ladders will break the game for builders you obviously dont know what your doing

... in your opinion. Lets see how many bases are still standing after 2 days on a populated server.

Indeed. Once I get on someone's roof it's base over in my experience. Ladders look set to make this super easy so I'd expect ladders + offline raiding to make any base easy raidable by anyone.

Wait for it IanH ... wait for people to tell you that you only need to put barricades on your roof and that will magically solve the problem? :)
Somebody mentioned that the ladders even allow access into ( non-barred ) windows. Wieeeee ... Lets all make a concrete box with no windows and spikes all over. O wait, that is almost what people are doing now and they still get raided.
The only defense right now is ... cave bases ... massive cave bases with door after door after door. With massive bases build around the cave to delay the enemies even more.
Next big outcry from people: "Cave bases are unraidable, we demand drills!!!". *sigh*

Access via a window will depend on crouching I don't have the dev branch installed so I don't know if it will be possible. But as I see it ladders will make it possible to place C4 and effect access wherever you wish - any side, any level or roof.
Can't see that there is any such thing as a massive cave base - all the caves are reasonably small//.
The obvious approach might just be enormous honeycomb bases that make it difficult to guess where the loot is but they will need to have a very large footprint and at least 2 levels when 3xC4 on the roof can take off 4 panels & damage 4 others & panels underneath.
Just have to see how it pans out & whether there is a counter that we haven't thought of.
I'd like to point out the Almighty Garry has blessed us with a couple of fixes:
No more layering:

And players are no longer gun toting monkeys with trigger happy tails:

Interestingly, siege ladders are apparently used in modern special forces raids.
Pretty cool little trick at :23

You can climb in through unbarred windows. Tried it last night.
I think lots of folks looked forward to ladders, but the OP's title had a good point and frank's solution has merit: ladders make more sense being leaned against things than stuck to them with magic crazy glue.

Came here to say this. Cool as that SWAT vid was, I don't think Rust should go down the militarization route. Leave that to the American police.
Ladders need to be leeeeeaned
edit: Really, I think the ladders should be implemented like signs were. You start out knowing how to make a shitty little one, but require blueprints for successive sizes. The larger ones would require metal, take up five inventory slots (kidding... maybe) and reach maybe to the third story. And they'd have to be stood on something, not just get glued to the wall. Or maybe it's time to do something with all those horse hooves...
bet anything player count will go down in this game. player count was doing very good past weeks. but watch it drop so fast. cause of ladders being in the game not balance right.
oh well we can always come back when shit gets removed or balanced right few months later like always

when you build a base make more doors, more ways to shoot them, windows around the doors and so on, just like before, if the base was built badly then it was easy to get them while they were on because they had one or two ways to get to us so you could just blow up everything around and keep their 1-2 doors closed.

Every single update, it's "___ has literally ruined Rust and NOBODY will EVER play it again!!1!!"

just said player count will go down. it hit up around 20k players. lets see it go back down to 4k again js...
you cant shoot or pick axe off ladders any more so lets see more of the balance they will put in to ladders. never said nobody will ever play rust again lol. this guy
The only ones that leave the game are either people that are burnt out so they just wait for more updates before they return, the ones that are tired of some game breaking bug that they don't fix immediately or the carebears that whine about everything in the game that makes their base unsafe because they added ladders, what's the issue with them? build something different than what you did before find new ways to defend your house. The player count won't go down because of some ladders, be sure of that.
