Hello, What will happen when the new version of rush is released? Are we gonna be forced to start from zero if we want to play the new version of the game? Thank in advance for your answer. http://playrust.com/
When is the next update? So what’s likely to happen is this. Some time in the next 2-3 weeks a new branch will appear on Steam. The community will be split in two. New and old. We’re not going to take the old branch away from you until everyone is in universal agreement that the new branch is the future. And even then we’ll probably keep the old branch anyway – just for a laugh.
The "new version" will be a different build of the game. I'm pretty sure that it's the new networking code that Facepunch Studios wrote themselves, and they are going to need a lot of time to test it and make it work without bugs. The current version of Rust uses uLink's networking code, and they have reasons for not wanting to use it anymore. What you will need to do is switch the version of Rust you have installed (using the Betas tab in Rust's properties) when the new branch is available, and it'll update to the new files and systems. You won't be able to play on servers using the uLink version with the new version. So, yes, unless those servers are able to back up their data and restore it with the new version, you will be starting over. If the only thing they're changing is getting rid of uLink and using their own networking code, the map file and player data should be exactly the same. However, if they package lots of other changes along with it, and those changes aren't made in the old uLink version, then it is less likely that the backup will be usable. As for the "when", sometime in the next 2-3 weeks, exactly as it says in what you quoted in your own post.
If they are making major changes to bring good to the game and fix it's issues, I'll be fine with it starting over. But if they do, I think they should make sure we keep everything we learned (kevlar, weapons, building materials, ect.

Oh well, that's the fun part of Rust, scrounging around to find what you need to survive :3 As long a major issues are being fixed and updated, who can complain? lol
Highly unlikely. A patch this big will very likely wipe all servers.
Thank for the answer! well I guess that the risk of playing an alpha game. It's can be exciting that everyone will start from zero too I wouldn't play the game the same way as I did when I started ;) But I d'ont see the connection between the update and wiping off the progressions of everyone? maybe someone can explain to me.
But I d'ont see the connection between the update and wiping off the progressions of everyone? maybe someone can explain to me.
Say they add ladders, and they had to make slight tweaks to the walls already in game to get them to work right. Your bases wall system wont match up to the way the new system works and will likely crash the server.
If the only thing that gets changed in the new version is the networking code, then servers should be able to switch to the new version without having to wipe anything. I say should because there could be problems, but only one thing is changing, and the networking code being replaced shouldn't change the buildings the players have made on the map. But, if a lot of other changes are made as well, to other parts of the game, such as the walls like oXYnary said, that increases the chances that old backups will not be compatible. If the new version included a complete rebuild of how weapons worked, and all weapon entries in the game were basically erased and created over again for the new system, this completely new, fresh rebuild of the weapons system is not going to be exactly the same as the old one. And that means that, if you load up a backup from before the update, and you try and pull a weapon out, nobody knows what's going to happen. You may pull out the wrong weapon (a rock with the sounds of a bow when you selected an MP5, for example), the weapon may be glitched up, or the whole server just might crash. And if the uLink version didn't get these changes when the new version was released? Almost guaranteed to be incompatible. However, I know nothing about what will actually be included in the update, so I cannot tell you which it will be. Only the devs know. If they say the update will require a wipe, there's nothing we can do about it.
Thank for your explanations Elixwhitetail & Onynary ;)
What you will need to do is switch the version of Rust you have installed
IIRC they'll push the new version as a patch, a keep the old one in beta branch, so when it comes out you'll just have to update, or switch to the branch if you want to keep playing with the old one

I thought you meant that the new version will come as a beta branch, just wanted to correct that
btw... Am I the only one who can't connect to UK 1 server? (Official) (d'ont want to make another thread for this) it's seem to be offline since yesterday 11pm I see people inside but me and my friends can't connect to it. Thank!
