With quarries being only a few hours old, there's still a lot to see about how they perform over time. But so far, I can't say I'm terribly impressed by them in terms of return on investment. Assuming you get a BP, they're hella expensive to build. But for something that generates resources in a semi-autonomous manner, that's more of an investment than an expense. My team was lucky. We got an air drop with some in it and a supply flare. Called in another drop and got a bunch more. So at least they were free to me.
So far, I've dropped a lot of survey charges to find the richest desposits I could. I found a couple of spots that gave "a lot" of sulfur and metal ore / fragments, so set up a few quarries. Dropped in 100 fuel in each to see how they performed. As to be expected, stone pours out in abundance. Not a bad thing, but not necessarily very useful when your base is already completely upgraded to armour and there's nothing left to build. Metal and sulfur were in small quantities compared to the time it took to mine them and the fuel required to power the quarries.
The big thing is the fuel costs. Yes, the cloth cost of the fuel was reduced, but the animal fat requirement was increased. Cloth can now be harvested in abundance with the new hemp planets, but animals that give a high amount of fat (bears and boars) aren't exactly in high supply compared to the requirement, making the fat a bit of a bottleneck in the process.
So at the rate fuel is consumed in the quarries vs how quickly they can actually churn out resources, are they actually worth it? They're only a few hours old and I haven't had a lot of time to play with them yet, but from my initial impression, I'd say you're better off heading out with a pick axe and harvesting nodes. In the same amount of time it takes to run 100 units of fuel in a quarry, you can harvest 10x that many resources without requiring fuel (and it's hunting / crafting requirements).
So what do you guys think of them so far? What are your quarry experiences to date?
I imagine they'll be powered by electricity eventually, or maybe you can upgrade their efficiency.
Same experience, it must be balanced.
They look cool, and the idea of automated resource collection is great, but I won't be building one anytime soon. Unless you're in a big group there's no point. Also, that building blocked radius doesn't really do anything except insure only large groups can secure them. Putting up a wall will be easy for a clan with 12 story armored buildings and other such monstrous structures.
I haven't tried them yet but I would think if you got one from a drop as a solo player the idea of stone kicking out on its own sounds good to me lol I an chop trees and build twig then go pick up the stone and upgrade without the harvesting step. But other than that I don't see how a solo player can benefit unless a clan leaves one unprotected And I can steal what I need
You can get fat from players and use it to make fuel.
You can even kill urself to obtain fat from yourself. You can make a whole industry based on killing naked dudes for their fat, that is, if you have no consideration for human life of course, you monster.
What a great idea!

Do players produce more fat when they're fed? You can feed people up out of the "kindness of your heart" then slaughter them for their fat.
Of course they are worth it! Rust just went from the stone age to the Industrial Revolution!
Crunch, fuel costs did not get raised. There is no increase in animal fat price.
Old cost:
1 cloth + 2 animal fat = 5 fuel
New cost:
1 cloth + 3 animal fat = 10 fuel.
Animal fat was reduced by .5 per fuel craft, and cloth was reduced by 1 per fuel craft.
I'm pretty sure they will balance it out after seeing how it performs on live, nothing is ever final guys. I agree, high fuel costs right now and so far mine have only produced stone and sulfur, no ore. I set up a few on our server for players to use.
Don't worry guys, Quarries aren't set in stone. (dat pun )
Expect more to change than to stay the same. There was like 6 changes about 2 hours after launch from what people on Rustafied had discovered.

Fair enough. Despite having crafted a bunch of fuel, I never realized we were getting 10 per run instead of 5. That's good.
That said, the cost of the fuel is still steep for minimal return at the moment. And I'm glad to see that it wasn't just me noticing that these things weren't really worth the effort at the moment. I'm sure they'll be balanced out over the course of the next few weeks though. But for the time being, I won't be investing much time into keeping the quarries running.

FP should really think about doing another pass at animal AI soon. It might be the only solution necessary to make the fuel farming worthwhile if animals weren't burning donuts on vertical rock faces.
There will hopefully be other kinds of fuels in the future. (Oil, ethanol electicity.)
Have the devs talked about electricity other than the windmill and generator art?
So far, not worth it at all. I played with them for a bit, first barrel I hit after the update gave me the quarry.
Damn near impossible to defend with that building block radius and extremely slow to gather. The server will wipe before you get the resources out of it that you used to build it + defenses for it.
Well when farming comes in maybe they will include PIG farming!
