• How Do Servers Have Custom Maps?

Hey everyone! I've noticed a few servers have custom maps with more rad towns and different areas. I'm curious how this is possible and what needs to be done to modify the map. I've been a level and game designer for years now and would love to take a stab at making a map for Rust from complete scratch. Any help would be appreciated!
ide love to see this with new rad towns as I havent seen where thast possible at all. There are mods that allow you to add new resource spawn points and loot box spawn points, but not structures liek the cement building hangar and so forth.
What kind of new towns? And more importantly, which servers have this?
I've seen a few, here is one http://rust-servers.net/server/503/
FAKE
I'm not sure how one would make a map... but I'd assume you could just replace the save files with your own map. I could be way off, just a guess. Either way, the possibility of custom maps is exciting until we (maybe) get procedural generation.
What they do is: build metal buildings that cointains loot like red, silver and green crates
So yeah, after roving up and down and hacker valley not finding jack shit I can confirm this is definitely bullocks and a false advertisement ploy. Can anyone give me empirical evidence that a server using the 2014 rust map exist?
Well, as the guy a couple posts above said, you can build different buildings, metal or well designed wood, and create new spawn points for red/green/blue/brown boxes. Oxide let's you do this. They would spawn exactly like they would in rad towns. I don't know if that is what they are doing though.
if you build a map editor I'm sure it would be easy to alter map data.
Admin-created buildings is a great idea and can add a lot to the landscape... right up to the point (about 20 minutes in) where they're bricked up with player doors and start sprouting ugly extensions.

You can make it impossible to place foundations/doors/etc on admin-placed buildings. As to the original topic, the closest I've seen to a proper 'custom map' server was by Chaos Island servers, where they had custom spawn points for new players, which put you on the 'dead' side of the rust map, far from the road. There, they had added custom resource spawns and loot box points etc, though it appeared that they'd had problems with decay destroying their admin-created buildings at some point and hadn't remade them. The resource and box spawns were also too predictable, dense and quick to respawn, but all in all it was an interesting experiment. Unfortunately I think they took that one down a couple of weeks back. If the procedural map stuff languishes and isn't released in the next month or two, I might get around to trying that myself (custom map with resource-adding mods etc), but with tweaks to essentially make resource (wood/ore/box) locations properly random or close to it, and scaling with server population. Edit: this used to be the server entry for them: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:https://rustindex.com/server/12644_chaos_island_4_custom_map_1_2_craft_pvp_chaosisland And a glimpse at their previous site, with posts about the 'new map' ;) http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://chaosisland.enjin.com/home/m/20149723/keyword/home/page/2/keyword/ Unfortunately they seem to have abandoned the idea.
