How would a trial work anyway? It's a multiplayer game.
Outside of restricting people to tier 0 equipment and structures and disabling a majority of the game, not really a lot that could be done to make a trial. When the game is no longer an Alpha, it might be different.
It's steam only and not free to try, because if you tried the buggy piece of crap there's no way in hell you'd pay money for it unless steam swindled it out of you!

Damn that steam app forcing us to buy early access games that are completely honest about how unfinished they are! They swindled us!
