In rust there's some point when there's no much more progress, because the gamers can be divided in clans and looners, and the only point to build bases it's to be an asshole with others clans or to fuck with looners, i wish to see how more people can cooperate to make more interesting social organizations, like cities or towns, but it's impossible for the people to do this when the only point is to kill others, so i guess that a solution for this will be to make a common enemy, imagine that once a week there's some kind of invasion of npcs, like robots, zombies, mutants, etc... like in the Pitch Black movie, some kind of weekly or monthly event, so people can concentrate theirs efforts not only in killing each others but to join in better bases and towns to defend themselves from the invasion, and of course this would be rewarded by looting the corpses of the invaders.
What do you think about this? To much surrealistic? :zoid:

Watch this video imagine it's Rust :D

In one of Garry's early Big Picture postings I think alluded to some big monster, so an occasional common foe might show up someday. The rick with that sort of critter is that we run the risk of the game being about that foe. Whataver else comes in, it seems like the goal is to make Rust about newmans dealing with each other.
The greatest enemy we can put in a game is humanity. No Zombie, Robot, Mutant, Alien, Turtle, poop with arms and legs holding an AK will ever match Humans. A human can be far more destructive, and has been with Love than they have been with Hate.
I agree GrymThor, but i think it would be fun if devs put some kind of event, like an invasion or a big monster. :v
If survival becomes more serious people may band together purely to survive. Each on a task, mining, woodcutting, farming, defending, invading.

Make a predator. Give it traps, distracting sounds, and sneaking. Make it so a player can play it. You got your greatest enemy.
You have to get around the AI by having a player play it, and you get a real badass enemy. Only problem is that people would just stereotype that it is an Evolve copy, and a way to abuse.
Make a monster client which drops you in a completely random server (which enabled it) and you can play the predator. You die, next server. Only drawback is the extremely few slots for them.

it contains a sound file too here's a scenario
Imagine you're walking through a forest at night, its foggy too so you cant see much the moon is out though but is currently covered by clouds, you're out just to get some wood you haven't strayed far from home, you suddenly hear this sound,
http://www.soundsnap.com/ghostmoans2x
the clouds suddenly stop covering the moon and then this creature walks out from behind a thick group of trees...

I think a common enemy is the one Big Thing missing from this game. It really would foster cooperation.

Sure, we can be more sneaky. A dedicated lone wolf player who has it in for you is the most dangerous thing. But a robot 3 stories high which tramples bases would be definitely something where the "we must deal with this now" mindset would arise. Also, those same lone wolf players wouldn't really be able to deal with this monster on their own. Will the clan nearby help them out because their base will be next? Will they allow that lone wolf to join in with them fighting it because they really need every man they can get? Or will they wait it out and laugh at their windows as his base is crushed.
I really think it would be a game changer.

But how often would that thing show up? Or is this more like a something dormant that you could wake up?

It shows up every time someone uses a racist or homophobic slur in chat.

that's silly

They'd be all over the map in seconds.
I suggest that it would show up for example at full moon days.

A Blood Moon, That way on PvE servers everyone would be subject to the moons "Blood Rage" influence, this would allow for players to attack each other (but only if your outside in the moons light), and the Creature(or what ever) would come out during this moon phase and cause havoc, destroy buildings eat people and generally make an ass of itself.
A water creature that some times venture on land?

Haven't been paying attention to moon phases, but if that went in I def would
Some things i can think of.
Lion packs that actively hunt a player if they come across a path where a player has recently been.
Crocodiles/Alligators that might go after players in the water.
On the server I play on, I tend to set up PvP events to get players working together and killing each other. About once a day when there are 30-ish or more online, I'll do an event where I spawn in 4 signal flares. 1 hour before, I'll tell people where it'll be (usually at a random monument) so that they can get into position. Then I drop all the signals in one spot and let people fight it out. The winners get away with the contents of the drops. It works out quite well and people enjoy it. Noobs or solo players will often band together so they have a chance against larger groups. And some crafty noobs will hide and observe then come and loot bodies after the fight. It's a lot of fun for everyone involved.
As an added bonus, it gets people out exploring the map. That way, they can find each others' bases and come back later to raid.
Still trying to figure out other stuff like that I can do to get players more engaged though. I have a few ideas I'll be trying out to see what happens.

This is more or less how my group operates and we do quite well. The only time we really all do the same thing together is when we raid. By dividing tasks like that, we get shit done in a hurry. We usually have our bases all armoured before anyone else on this server does, even larger groups, just because we're better coordinated.
i kinda agree that we need at least some sort of challenging AI or something that needs cooperation from other players in order to last the day or defeat them etc. cause the game has not changed one bit since i returned (got rust the day it came out and played for many months)
its practically all the same just its been reworked more and new stuff has been added and that C4 and the stuff to make it.. is more incredibly expensive to craft now! meaning not everyone is throwing C4 out willy nilly everywhere
but still people just raid everything they see and next thing you know your back at a beach or awake to this outside your house / base

some sort of force that attacks players in force would help boost PvE only servers... after all
there is a strong basis for both PvP and PvE in the rust community... some like to do only one thing and others maybe like a bit of both...
but one thing is for sure tho! PvE tends to get boring after a while because its imply not challenging when you start getting weapons etc
Ok, i'll drop an idea, imagine a wolf like this, with enough strength to insta-kill semi-naked, and two hits for full armored people, imagine this wolf appears at night (full moon nights) and they hate fire, like the Pitch Black aliens, so you can go outside with your torch and be safe, make a campfire, lantern, etc... if the fire stops you're fucked, the goal is to kill this wolfs because you can loot from their corpses a lot of meat and cloth, also some good quality items they swallow from their past hunts, this kind of wolf would attack your bases too, so you must to put fires around your base and kill the ones that come closer.
Full moon night, you start to hear howlings, people start to put fires everywhere, nakeds with torches, teams of wolfs hunters with guns and candle-hats... an awesome cooperative event :D also you can be a dick and turn off the fires of others.

sounds like don't starve! i like it!

The huddled masses would be a cool addition. Just as long as the island isnt over run with the things all the time.
