Donating a Free Copy of our Weather System for Rust
36 replies, posted
Hey there,
We are being supported here on Reddit to help get Rust a day and night cycle and weather (http://www.reddit.com/r/playrust/comments/39yrdy/donating_free_copy_of_weather_system_to_rust/)
We are the developers of the UniStorm (http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/unistorm-v2-0-dynamic-day-night-weather-system-released-now-with-playable-demo.121021/) It has 13 kinds of dynamic weather (including snow, rain, fog, and seasonable weather), dynamic clouds, dynamic precipitation, 4 seasons, moon phases, dynamic snow, and so much more.
We have seen many people requesting the implementation of UniStorm with Rust as stated here: http://www.reddit.com/r/playrust/comments/348fru/rust_weather_systemwith_videos/
Since we are the developers of UniStorm, and big fans of Rust, we will donate a free copy for Facepunch Studios to use for Rust, if this post get enough attention. If it does, Facepunch Studios will have to make it happen, right?
Just in case you didn't know, UniStorm is one of the top Weather Systems available for the Unity3d Game Engine. It will truly add to player immersion. The bad thing is that Weather Systems are very time consuming. So, we will save them, and fans, months of waiting time.
We will be contacting the developers with a link to this post. Hopefully they will gladly accept our offer and start implementing UniStorm with Rust.
To prove we are who we say we are: We are currently Online on Unity3d

Here's a little video demonstrating a dynamic Thunder Storm:

Yes please
If compatible and legit, why the hell not? :P
I hope you guys aren't too late cuz they are just starting weather very soon here, and may have spent a few months planning their approach already. If this works out tho I would be so fuckin happy. Any chance the heaviest rain levels could be heavier than in the video without much more cost to performance?
Looks awesome, would love something like this (or this itself) in the game.
Awesome, Good luck guys, *sings* I'm only happy when it rains...
Yes please! I am down for this.
Now these water collectors will have a use.
I'd love to see weather like this in Rust. Would love to see snow and sand storms as well.
I don't like rain in the desert, maybe dust devil... can this engine use different weather in different biome?
I don't like rain in the desert, maybe dust devil... can this engine use different weather in different biome?
While it does technically rain in the desert I agree. There needs to be a system where it rains rarely in the desert. But I would love dust devils, Tornadoes Etc.
Your best best would be to contact garry or maybe even Andre directly, and to make sure your system works with Andre's Time of Day
ARS Weather System is designed to work with Time of Day.
1. go to the reddit thread using the first link in the OP
2. read Garry's response to this offer
BTW, what they are offering to FP only costs $60.
Garry said (in my words) it is not that simple, but they will consider it.
PR stunt.
Not really. The OP was clearly sincere, likes Rust, AND was hoping Rust would use their system. Sure they got some advertising, but how many people developing are going to buy their weather system because of a few posts on Rust forums. Very few.
It's too cynical to call this a PR stunt. The OP just looks too excited and overeager to me.
At the end of the day, I'm sure Garry will look into it. If it can tie into their existing code with minimal tweaking required, then it could be a good idea.
If it doesn't play well, or if FP already have a weather system well developed and close to rollout, then it may be best to stick with their own system rather than going to a 3rd party.
3rd party plugins for anything are always a bitch because they tend to be a closed codebase that you have to code around. So major changes to your own code may not play well with plugins. Or you may have to replace some of your own code to acommodate a plugin. And of course, there's always the issue of support that has to be dealt with.
While I want to see weather in game, and this system looks fantastic, Garry knows his shit and will make the right call for Rust in the end.

It's a PR stund because if Rust accepts they can boast "used in Rust" and get $$$
It costs fucking 60 dollars, I think garry of all people can afford that if he wanted this.

Not to mention posting on just reddit(where garry already replied) wasn't enough for them

I see nothing inherently wrong with this. If they are willing to extend their services for no cost, then why should they not hope to get some exposure out of the deal, as well?
This is not some black & white world where one can expect something for nothing, or else the other person in the deal is some sleazy asshole. It is called scratching each others backs, should the deal be accepted - no need to blow their intentions out of proportion by suggesting that what they are doing is some sort of dark conspiracy.

In cases like that you send them an email, not make a thread on reddit and facepunch. It's a typical PR stunt to turn community into going "omg gary pls". Thankfully garry is not a man who buckles to community pressure.
It is actually a common manipulation strategy involving many people.

Agreed - I am also glad that Garry is not some pushover when it comes to community pressure.
For the rest, I am well aware that this is a sort of manipulation, whether they purposefully intended manipulation or not. But like I said: this world is not black & white. For many businesses, they are forced to use tactics such as this one, just to be noticed by even a minority of potential customers.
So I inherently see nothing wrong with this. They do seem genuine in their respect for Rust, and they have been quite clear in their proposal across a myriad of sites, that in return, they would expect at least some small form of community exposure.
In the end, I do not think they deserve to be called out for this, is all, as their position is an understandable one, and a rational one.

It wasn't enough only because there was no reply from Garry for a long time. So they also posted it in these forums before he replied.

For those same reasons, Garry shouldn't be called out for turning this offer down. Many kids aren't going to be able to use logic to fill in the blank and will come here posting useless threads calling Garry dumb and ruining Rust, etc. I would honestly prefer Garry do the weather system his way at this point because I think he'd make it better suited for Rust where this software being offered is rather 'cookie cutter'.
I got the impression Rust/Garry hired a guy to work on the weather system specifically for Rust. The work is already in progress. Accepting a "free" solution that would otherwise cost 55$ because someone offered it on the forum is maybe not the right way to treat an employee/contracter.
Isn't posting this here publicly kind of a snub to FP? I mean, he's aware of your product and chose not to use it. Seems kind of shitty to go behind his back and present it to the community like this.
It is not a snub or shitty. Just someone had this idea and posted it to reddit and these forums.
The guy is probably not being evil - just naive (imo) to think that FP would automatically use their weather system. It looks like a good product, so maybe the poster thought it would be perfect for Rust, and somehow thought posting it on reddit was an OK way to start a discussion.

Garry is under no obligation, in my opinion. An offer is exactly that - an offer. Nothing more, and nothing less should Garry choose to decline. There are others who are going to run their mouths off, pretending they understand what Garry understands, but who cares about them?
The two parties that actually matter, have been civil in this entire exchange, and both appear to understand that this is just an offer - not some conspiracy or act of blackmail.

I'm not calling him evil -- just seems a little desperate. Garry said in the Reddit thread that he's seen the product before and chose the current system over it. My beef is that it seems extremely unprofessional and rude to lobby in such a public way.
But of course you can't recognize that, Cinder.

I just disagree with you. The OP was never rude.
Still it was an offer, Garry (mostly said no) now he needs to meet a standard, UniStorm put a nice line with this weather system, if Garry doesn't meet it, will lose credibility even more.
Thank you for the insight and for the standard developers from UniStorm.
