Hi,
there is a problem with the current cupboard range. Basically the cupboard coverage is 8 foundations long, so it covers all area from it up to 8 foundations away from it. The issue is that you cannot place another cupboard at the 9th foundation, you can only place it at the 10th foundation, so there are 2 "units" where you cannot place it.
This mean a situation like the following is possible:

The red area is not covered by cupboard, and it's not possible to place another cupboard there as its between the 8th and the 9th foundation range, where you cannot place it.
This has to be fixed. Just make the placing of new cupboard within 8 and not 10 units.
Or you could just build defensively and accommodate for that? Cupboards are being deemphasized with an eye to phasing them out entirely over time. It's time to stop using it as an anti-raid crutch. (In fairness, base defenses need to be augmented before the cupboard can be eliminated, so you won't be able to fully let go just yet.)

I look forward to when they do actually start phasing them out. Ever since the uneeded ladders nerf (Eugh, why couldn't they have just added a horizontal wall type buildable from the radial with cool madmax death spike vibes instead, that you could use as ladder protection skirt), your main toolcupboard is more important than ever.
So I'll ask again: Why do cupboards need to be "phased out"? If something is needed to replace their functionality... why not simply add that, make sure it works, and then remove cupboards completely?
OP is correct, cupboard placement became a little funky after the change. It is a combination of the gap and elevation that leaves dead spots in the coverage, especially on hilly terrain. When you (or an enemy) notice the dead spots, you have to make awkward changes to the base to plug the holes.
It's not game breaking, it's just messy.
OP, this is how you place cupboards:

That said, they need to bring back raiding ladders, spherical cupboards and remove that range limitation. System was perfect before they messed it all up, cupboards were exclusively an anti-raiding tool back then. It was an error to bring it back as an anti-raiding tool again.

That design is literally impossible in game. I think you don't understand the problem.
Cupboard protection is 8 squares long. Cupboard prevention is 10 squares long.
So you cannot place a cupboard on the actual edge of another cupboard's protection radius.

I didn't make that drawing and it was just an indication. Spacing all of this an extra 2 foundations won't leave a gap in center because there is a cupboard in the center. The drawing provided at the start of the thread is just proof that you can place cupboards in a bad manner. Put the first in the.center and then expand from there, no sense making a ring like the OP did if there isn't one in the center.

I see what you're saying. But I think people just want FP to do the logical thing and make the prevention and protection radiuses (radii?) the same.
Doesn't seem like an illegitimate request to me.
That neat design works fine on perfectly flat ground, but when the terrain gets hilly, that's where you have problems. I'm not so worried about protecting a building as I am stopping people from building over high stone walls protecting a compound.

Not denying the system is shitty, I just don't agree that the OP image is the problem.
Deicide[RS], the way you placed the cupboards in your picture is not correct as pointed out.
Also in practice you will often find constraints given by terrain to place cupboards, like rocks or steepy hills. The fact the radius is different is a problem in most situations, and lead to the problem in the first picture. With the 2 radius being the same the problem will be gone.
So, they fixed this. From the Dev blog:
-Removed extra 5m tool cupboard placement prevention buffer
Thanks, FP!

Whew, you'd think from some posts in here that 1) it wasn't really an issue or 2) they are doing away with cupboards at some point so it doesn't really matter.
